Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

I don't know any of their best character nominees. In terms of story-based games this has been a somewhat meager year. I think I'd give it to Merrick from Broken Age or ARID and the mainframe from The Fall.

That infamous part of Bravely Default could win its own award of Biggest Overreaction of the Year. The game has sliders for both difficulty and random encounters. Just turn the encounters off and walk to the bosses. It's tedious, but people saying it ruins the whole game are nuts, since you can power through it in like 2-3 hours. Plus from a story perspective, it's kind of neat.

The entire thrust of the story being a twist in on the classic FF 4 heroes of light needing the crystals to defeat the big bad was neat, but I stopped caring about it or the characters long before then. I was actually eager to try out the optional bosses since the combat system (which is great) was the only thing driving me forward at that point.

However, the optional bosses rely so much on insane damage numbers that, at the time, it felt like they were all "solved" with Stillness. It's such a boring and tedious method that I just dropped the game at that point because there was nothing left in the game for me. I've since learned that using a Salve-Maker to boost HP might have made Stillness not the only strategy but even still, the fights still revolve around playing extremely defensively with Utsemi and Rampart which I found boring. The boss fights up that point were interesting which required varied tactics for each. I loved bosses like the Red Mage or Salve-Maker but the optional fights felt dulled to just high damage output when they mashed all the different types together.

I might have just finished the last stretch of the game but going to the crystals to beat the each easy boss there was just tedious enough that I didn't bother. That said, yea up to that point, I mean pretty much the boss fight before that (not including the dragons), I really enjoyed the combat and the game, so the game is still worth playing. I could do without the massive JP requirements on jobs after level 9 just because I didn't want to grind to see the top tier skills but there was still enough variety and synergy at the lower level. I might go back to try the optional bosses again though.

I have so many friends like Brad who pretend to hate karaoke but then are just waiting for when they get the entire spotlight and bust out like they were born there

Just finished the Day 2 podcast. That was some great discussion!

I can see why Watch Dogs won the Most Disappointing category now. I guess I kind of forgot just how much people were looking forward to it.

I'm actually kind of surprised at just how much hate was lobbed at Unity, though, especially from Patrick and Alex who had talked about it multiple times on the Bombin' in the A.M. podcast before, but didn't seem to nearly this much vitriol for it.

The only highway robbery is giving Best Debut to a game based on a multiple-times-exploited brand, with a combat system lifted entirely from another franchise, and from a developer that has been around for 20 years. What kind of category is this? How does Shovel Knight not win this? The word debut has lost all meaning.

Haha, I think in this case it's fine. :P

Oh man you're gonna have fun when they'll pick the overall GOTY.

Shadow of Mordor seems like the frontrunner for GOTY. It's just about the only game that every member of the staff has played and liked.

Just finished the first part of day three and holy shit was I howling at Dan taking bumps. So happy I live in the Bay Area so I can go check out Hoodslam. Been putting it off but no more.

Listening to the podcast, the Best Exclusives category is even dumber than I thought.

Yeah I don't really see the point of this category. You could just give it to Nintendo every year because they rely way more on exclusives than the other guys. Not competitive or interesting.

The lack of Wolfenstein on any of these lists makes me sad. Even all the guest contributor top 10s don't have it listed.

Maybe it'll win best 2014 game in 2015 next year

Bayonetta 2 is the only other game that everyone seems to have played and enjoyed but I don't see it competing with Mordor.
Only people that would be willing to fight for it are Patrick and Alex and Alex holds literally no sway over GOTY discussions. Patrick will sell it out if they offer him Alien: Isolation in the top ten in a heartbeat.

I don't know if it's just me but the discussion/nominees/arguments this year all feel kind of weak and uninspired in comparison to previous years.
