Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

Working my way through today's 'cast, and Hearthstone being disqualified from best debut because it's a "spinoff" of World of Warcraft just can't be justified. Seemed like a really heavy-handed and arbitrary decision by Jeff. I haven't played the game all that much, but that was just ridiculous, especially in the light of Mordor winning.

Yeah, considering what won, that really was the absolute dumbest decision they've made so far. I was annoyed at them judging soundtracks by 30 second phone samples, but that made me just go "ummm, what?". I get they like to play fast and loose, but there needs to be some sort of set rules.

Why does this thing say 56 years of continued excellence?

Is this how old Jeff is?

Actually on reflection it's kinda weird that Dangan Ronpa didn't even get a mention for music. Not even for a tinny youtube demolition pile!

I feel like DR's music works best during the game when it's total sensory overload

Like the discussion happening and people yelling back and forth as the music gets progressively faster as the case keeps going

On its own, without that context, people hearing it for the first time probably wouldn't like it

Well, yeah, Morrigan is the best non-Varric character in the series.

Morrigan is the best character in the series period! I SCOFF AT VARRIC!

This too. Cassandra is unequivocally great.

I really like Cassandra but there's something about her accent that throws me off. Sometimes it just sounds super really bad and I can't tell if its fake or if its an accent I'm not familiar with it.

Like if you've romanced her when you talk to her at Skyhold she says something like "The sight of you warms my heart" and it sounds so awkward. I don't know! Either way, her character is pretty baller.

Nah, Jeff is late 30s. I was gonna guess it was their total time they've worked in the games media but that doesn't seem like enough time for all of them... Jeff alone is over 20 years, I believe.

It's actually one of the major problems with the typical RPG setup - since your character has to be the one making all of the choices, other characters basically always have to defer to you for everything and are really only there for flavor dialogue.

One of the best things about Planescape Torment; it doesn't subvert it, but at least it justifies it

That's the only thing that's annoyed me so far. Just kind of felt like Jeff telling Alex (and sort of Patrick) to fuck off because he didn't like the game. There was no logic behind the decision, unless their criteria was specifically laid out as "first time for a developer to use an IP to create a game that is not part of a ongoing series," which I don't think it was.

Perhaps, but I also think Danganronpa has some great stand-alone tracks like Dangan Ronpa!, Climactic Return (in a similar vein) or Buzzkill. Of course, DR's tracks are that much more elevated when played in the proper context.

Probably. Doesn't really change much, though. Vivienne wouldn't hold a candle next to the Iron Bull.

Meh. Didn't really like Iron Bull all that much. I mean, he's not as annoying as Sera(though I did love her banter with Vivienne but it got old after a while) but I don't think he was as good as Varric, Dorian, or Cassandra honestly.

Sounds pretty sexy when she's reciting poetry though :0

I know plenty of people found her boring to start but she's just an immensely layered character. Confident but not cocksure. No nonsense soldier type but still loves romance and pageantry. Devout yet full of doubt. Almost like a real person.

And Morrigan in The Final Piece just broke me. She's the best.

Perhaps. I'm the kind of person who finds it difficult to like music without a rememberance of the context in which I first heard it, which is probably why I like game music so much.

Hearthstone being DQ'ed really does seem like Jeff not liking the game so he didn't want to even have to discuss it. Also, Bayonetta 2 had the best music, I'm guessing it wasn't nominated because Dan was too focused on making a case for DKC:TF to remember it and I don't have an excuse for Patrick.

Maybe he wasn't that impressed by the music

Listening to Luftrausers now, they did a pretty great job taking it out of the game and making comprehensible tracks. Personally, I feel like DR and a few other games might've had better standalone soundtracks. But the way it's implemented in-game is so fucking awesome, I do think it's a well-deserved win.

Halo MCC is immediately mentioned as an Xbone exclusive with no discussion about whether it should count being a remaster, but TLoUR is not mentioned on Jeff's initial list of PS4 exclusives or at any point during the category.

How odd.

Bought, played, and finished The Fall today. Not the least bit surprised, now, that it won best Story. Fine, fine game.

Is it available on any other platforms but Steam and WiiU?

Probably because Halo2 got heavily reworked, while the others are just up-ports.

Danganronpa is going to be Game of the Year, and do you know how I know why?

Gameageddon is actually [SPOILERS FOR DANGANRONPA]
The Worst, Most Despair-Inducing Incident in the History of Mankind. GOTY 2014 is what causes the events of Danganronpa.

yeah surprised watch dogs won that. It did pretty much do what it promised during that tech demo... but thats about all it did lol.

My expectations were pretty much checked the first time they showed actual footage of that... was that tgs?

I'm pleased that The Fall got the credit it deserves. Superb game. Not so happy that the ending was spoiled for people who haven't played it yet, but what can you do?

That can't be it, "Tomorrow's Mine" is the best song in a video game since "Fly me to the moon".

I disagree. "Fly me to the moon" was great and really got the blood pumping everytime its on. I never really got that out of any Bayo 2 track. Maybe its a consequence of playing them back to back but part of me just wished they would play the Bayo1 songs.

Its not odd of you
follow the money.

Transistor started wearing on me by the end.

I guess I just didn't like the connective tissue between the fights and it was frustrating because Bastion got that part really right.

Wow Watch Dogs wins most disappointing? Really? Really feels like Jeff and Dan gave up on this one, barely put up a fight.

Yeah, the 6 month delay and the downgrade controversy well ahead of release killed a lot of hype for the game. It still sold amazingly well, but I don't think people were as interested in it as they were when it was still a launch game.

Destiny being as awful as it is really did come out of nowhere.

A bunch of other PC/PS4 stuff was snubbed as well, despite really stretching the X1/PC library. It was weird how much they talked about The Swapper in relation to The Fall but didn't even mention it in the PC/PS4 category.

Oh well. What's even worse was how hard Jeff tried to downplay Nintendo.

I haven't had the time to listen to the podcasts yet but what was Watchdogs sin to get it most disappointing? just being generally mediocre? That game was a dud from a mile away.

Weird to see a game get called out for just not being very good when we just went through a holiday where like every other major game release was completely broken.

Yeah. I was calling it Assassin's Creed with a cell-phone before the new consoles even came out. I don't know, I think people were just so God damn desperate for a meaty, GTA-style open-world game on the new systems that the only thing they could think about was E3 2012.

Watch_Dogs is a concept with a lot of potential, but Ubisoft are the wrong people to make it happen. Can't stand their watered down shit.

Swapper is on WiiU, why would they mention it? Its not PS4 exclusive.

I reckon if Jeff saved his passionate Destiny hate speech for the final moments of the category instead of using it right at the start then the game would have easily won.

People's expectations about Watch_Dogs were already shaky by the end of the actual reveal trailer when he pulled out a gun and started shooting. Ever since the start it felt like there was a discussion about whether Ubisoft, of all companies, deserved the benefit of the doubt regarding a new IP at the beginning of a new generation, and whether the hacking stuff would be an innovative twist or just a meaningless gimmick where you'd get randomly generated profiles and do the same stop light/black out/bridges type tricks over and over. If you honestly were still excited for WD as some next gen vanguard even like a year (at the very least 6 months) before the game came out, then that seems more like on you than on the game, because all of the warning signs were there, and "the game looked pretty graphics wise in a scripted demo at E3 2012" doesn't cut it.

Destiny was a bill of goods that was so shocking that even people who weren't actually interested in Destiny had to stop and rubberneck at it after release, like, "Shit, what the fuck happened there!?" Even the people rocking the more realistic "it's just Borderlands with Halo shooting" expectations weren't prepared for the loot shit, or the bonkers writing, or the Donkey Kong Country 1 "we took an enemy and made it big, now it's a boss" bosses, or Guard Dinklebot While He Does a Thing Mission #127.

If you're going to argue that Watch Dogs was a worse game, then sure. But in terms of the gulf in mindset immediately before and after the final release (ie, the things that most people would consider factors in "disappointment") I think Destiny was far in the lead there.
