LIZARD SQUAD is Back. Planning XBL Attack. "Biggest attack yet". [UP: XBL/PSN Down]

Came home tonight after being away for Christmas vacation, so for the past few days I've been watching what was happening from afar. Just came back and, yup, couldn't sign in. The MTU trick was able to get me signed in, but all I'm testing out today is Netflix. I'm not gonna try gaming online until tomorrow, and if I have problems, there's always Suikoden 2 to keep me occupied.

Question regarding the DDOS attacks, a lot of botnets are from China right? I understand its impossible to differentiate attack traffic from the true customer traffic. Is it possible for Sony just block all China traffic (and any other country contributing heavily to the attack), good or bad, to help mitigate the DDOS attack? Obviously that would upset customers in those countries, but that's better than upsetting all your customers everywhere.

PSN finally UP for me last night.
Because of that attack, I've played only TLOU and watched some LIVE shows.
Minecraft would not start also (kids disappointed).
Was downloading DC Online until the service was taken down, my Christmas vacation ruined.

How's that for a new owner?
New Years is around the corner. There's also always weekends.

I cannot connect to psn with any other MTU than 1473.

I have tried setting it up through easy, it wont connect. I have manually changed it back to 1500, failed to connect to psn, turned the ps4 off, tried again with same settings, still fails.

I have tried various other MTU numbers, and nothing else lets me connect to PSN aside from 1473.
When I do connect, it says that my Router may not support packet fragmentation, and that some features may not be supported.

I have reset my router numerous times, but nothing will work aside from 1473.

Reading posts earlier people were saying that the MTU does nothing, then why cant I connect?

It depends on the sophistication of the botnet and whether proxies etc are used.

Sony use Prolexic it appears for ddos mitigation and they got completely owned by the looks.

It was probably a pretty good botnet.

parents graciously bought me a ps4 for our own christmas celebration today. It came with a pick1 out of 4 deal and I want to nab far cry 4 because I've heard bad things about destiny and the other two don't interest me. Really wish the site would work so I could have something to play...

Just use 1473 if that works for now and stop flapping.

Far Cry 4 is amazing, hope you get it soon. Also Dragon Age is incredible as well.

Only way I could get on is to use mtu 1473.
I got through using these means.

Currently have my free games downloading.

I'm actually paying for an online gaming service willingly.

I feel dirty. But I want free stuff... but I feel dirty.

Two games a month and considering them worth the ten seems good enough, but $120 a year? I'll probably end up doing it by three months, that way I can decide if I want to continue or not.

then Prolexic must not be a very good anti DDoS company then when they can't defend against these 'script kiddies' , Sony must find a better one

I wanna play Dragon Age Inquisition but I'm worried my world state my not import from DA Keep with these issues. I guess there's one way to find out...

Still can't log into steam community to vote for the community choice sale, and still can't log into Twitter on my phone. Noticed that Steam isn't connecting on my phone, either.

Is this shit all related?

Can't connect to the goddamn dragon age servers so I guess I don't get to play it at all. Didn't know it was online only. :(

*edit*
Still didn't connect so my world state can't be loaded, but it at least times out after a really long time and gave me the option to play offline.

Looks like I can't sign into PSN at all and that's the issue here.

Thanks, fucking loser douchebags!

Go to the network settings on your PS4 and uncheck the "connect to the internet" box. It should let you play without trying to connect to the EA servers.

Well, PSN has been good for me since this afternoon. But what is odd is that I have to log out and then back in to get it to kick in. Strange, but no big deal. Hopefully it is a kink that will get worked out. I'm just glad it seems to be back.

Prolexic is pretty much the best one, they're owned by Akamai who serves a massive chunk of the entire Internet's content. The amplitude of the attack was that bad. You can only mitigate DDOS, not outright defend yourself against it.

This is a rather banal form of dismissive ignorance. I know you're angry - but this doesn't help anyone. The size of the DDoS attack was enough to knock Microsoft's rather sturdy infrastructure over for a good bit. That should be quite indicative of the scope we're dealing with here. Earlier in the year, WoW, Steam and more, were knocked over through DDoS attacks. Blizzard has been managing the largest MMO in the world for ten years, and even they couldn't prevent something like this. Nor could Steam, arguably one of the more robust, and widely-spread-out infrastructures there is, related to gaming.

The problem with botnets used to DDoS, is it is cheap and easy for them to grow, whereas mitigation companies have to spend their own money to increase their capacity and capabilities. Botnets use any PC they can find, and infect, as hardware. It's literally free for the botnet to grow. It's a very unbalanced war. While botnets can grow exponentially, DDoS mitigation companies can only grow within reason - if they overspend to protect against what might never come, they lose money. If they under-spend, they're no good to anyone anyway. It's a seemingly very difficult balancing act, one that is getting increasingly wobbly.

They are apparently the best and most expensive in the business.

To be clear the "Script Kiddies" to not provide or maintain the botnet, they just rent airtime off the real hackers who actually make money from their work.

The Script Kiddies pay the real hackers so they can pretend that they are real hackers on twitter and to the media who act as if they are.

For perspective the DDoS size knocked over Live and PSN AT THE SAME TIME, think about what either of them would have to do to try to handle one of that size ON THEIR OWN.

That cannot happen, Live is perfect and has been working without issue for everybody 5 minutes after the attack stopped.

Apparently

Why does this bother you so much. So many post trying to say live was just as bad. What does it matter. Its different for everybody. In my case, Live has been much more stable the last few days. That is fact for me, and apparently others. Im sure some it has been the other way. No reason to keep posting about it.

I don't think most people are claiming this. Live has pushed through this whole ordeal much better than PSN but it's had its share of intermittent issues after the major attack.

I hit my son an Xbox One for Xmas. He had some issues on Xmas day afternoon in the UK. Then it was fine. I coukdnt attempt anything on PSN for days. All I know is the attack sucks.

He's been interpreting comments like yours as "Xbox Live is perfect". It's weird to watch someone meltdown like this, but also kind of interesting. XBL is objectively better. But it better be for all the money and resources MS has put into it. It's definitely not perfect though. This past year has proven that. It's been down more this year than all the 360 years combined.

In the Midwest, PSN has been up steadily for me since yesterday evening. I'm nervously waiting on the inevitable next round.

im in western Canada and it worked for me twice since the attacks started. got peggle 2 the first time and updated far cry the second. oddly it was the fasted psn download speeds ive ever gotten, almost 1/3 of my internet speed. friends list hasn't worked at all though, so I imagine online play might be broken as well.

live hasn't been perfect but it works. it seems to auto log me out if I don't do anything after a period of time but I have no issues otherwise.

didn't know kim gave them $300k worth of vouchers that could be resold. I thought they were just getting special unlimited accounts. rewarding these losers is fucked up.

I wonder if it's cleverer than that? By taking the money have they then definitely committed a crime (extortion)? Maybe they've been setup to make the police's job easier?

It has to do wit a lot of desnginuity and console warriors posting in this threads.

Let's not act as having a moral highground.

I don't see it as a moral issue, so there is no moral high ground. It's just interesting to see people losing it over someone else claiming a certain network has been more stable for them. Once again, XBL has objectively performed better the past week. And I've read this thread. I can't find people claiming XBL is a perfect network. If they had/do, they should be roundly mocked.

I'm pretty sure they'd already committed numerous serious crimes with their DDoSing, swatting, and calling in bomb threats on passenger planes. I think Kim just did it for the publicity.

One thing many ppl forget is that he is able to disable them within minutes. I wouldn't be suprised if that already happened.
