LIZARD SQUAD is Back. Planning XBL Attack. "Biggest attack yet". [UP: XBL/PSN Down]

He's been ointerpreting comments like yours as "Xbox Live is perfect". It's weird to watch someone meltdown like this, but also kind of interesting. XBL is objectively better. But it better be for all the money and resources MS has put into it. It's definitely not perfect though. This past year has proven that. It's been down more this year than all the 360 years combined.

Nope, his commented was understandable. It's the guys posting that Sony should give them compensation because Live was up and working perfectly and Sony are laughable etc that are not needed.

As I said maybe read the thread instead of trying get involved when you clearly haven't.

The sanctimonious stance isn't really needed either.

I'm pretty sure they'd already committed numerous serious crimes with their DDoSing, swatting, and calling in bomb threats on passenger planes. I think Kim just did it for the publicity.

Absolutely but it gets a bit wooly when its across borders. The thing I really can't get my head around is that they do it for twitter fame? When did social media become such an important thing? I mean i've used it to share photo's with friends (you know real life friends) but everything is locked from everyone else, I couldn't give two hoots about attracting strangers to follow me etc?!

Maximum Transmission Unit.

Think of it like a pipe. By adjusting the MTU value, the pipe gets thinner, allowing less to travel through it. Usually, this would be a bad thing, but in this case, a smaller MTU means packets of data that can be sent and received are smaller. It seems Sony is blocking large packets of data, so by adjusting the max data packet size, you can connect.

It really adds credence to the fact all the consoles that are trying to re-connect are in fact DDOSing the network again.

I'm going to hijack this thread for a follow-up question: (re: IP-Fragmentation)

I'm having connectivity issues on my PS4 when playing Destiny (for months now). Every now and then (sometimes all is well for weeks, sometimes this happens every 15 mins, independent of time, day or me using multiple services simultaneously) the following happens:

  1. Getting kicked out of the game
  2. Getting kicked out of the party
  3. Not being able to use any networking device (LAN or WiFi, this includes my PC, smartphone, tablet,...), but
  4. Not getting a networking error message (no "a lan cable is not connected" or similiar).
  5. Performing a Connection Test on my PS4 returns all functionality, but at the bottom of the screen there's a message saying that my router may not support IP-Fragmentation.

I already exchanged my router/modem, had my ISP check all lines and tried port forwarding, DMZ etc. - no avail.

Now I read somewhere, that the MTU setting allows me to avoid IP fragmentation - Is that true? is it worth a try and is there a better way than assigning a random number (1473)?

Where are you based? Try mtu of 1500, 1492 and see if the error message goes away.

If you set the MTU lower on the PS4 you are effectively telling the PS4 to split large data packets into multiple packets rather than relying on the router (and the IP protocol) to do it. I would say its worth a go.

With that said though I have never heard of an IP router that doesn't support fragmentation, its a basic part of the IP spec, do you have a particularly old/cheap router?

Did you exchange your router for a different model? I had a similar problem back in the day with CoD: Black Ops for PC, and it was being caused by my router (WRT54G) running out of memory.

I upgraded to a router with more ram and that solved it.

I'm currently using an Ubee EVW3226 Modem/Router, previously a Thomson modem/router. All provided by my ISP.
Thing is, this fragmentation-warning is new to my PS4 and I only noticed it since I'm playing Destiny - but I never had any issues before, so I didn't really check (on the PS4, got it only this summer - I'm 100% certain this issue did not exist in my PS3 days, despite using the same router with both consoles).

Central Europe, currently away from my PS, so I couldn't try it yet. Will give it a spin the next couple of days.

Who is your isp and what is their recommended mtu setting?

You need to find that out and ensure that your router and ps4 and match if you are getting the fragmentation warning in ps4 settings.

You need to get this right or you will be one of the first to be blocked by ddos mitigation if this happens again.

My router being set to 1500 caused it for me after I changed isps, the new one needed it to be 1492.

Can anyone connect to PSN without changing the MTU setting ?

I still refuse to do so, it cannot be that only folks who read online forums are able to connect to PSN.

Is Sony blocking the stardard MTU stetting as of now? This would be quiete a bad idea.

I feel they have some sort of new "security" in place which also block legitimate users ....

I was still able to get on with the normal MTU settings, but it took quite a few tries, whereas with MTU at 1473 it works instantly.

A lot can connect without changing anything from default, if you find you can't try it.

Or don't, it's up to you...

I never changed my MTU and its been working fine since yesterday. (Sweden)

I didn't play PS4 over Christmas Day or Boxing Day, but have had a bunch of sessions over the last three days. Not had a single issue, nor had to make any MTU changes. Australian timezone, playing in the afternoon and evening.

Is the DDoS still occurring? Didn't it end when they got their Megaupload payout?

Both services, and the games on them, need to handle poor connectivity much better, many fail much more gracefully.

Several games you can play by turning off the internet - so why doesn't the console automatically default to that if it can't connect to XBL/PSN? And why don't more games fall back to offline if they can't connect, or simply turn off access to online components?

This has shown just how integrated online has become, and how dependent both publishers and platform owners are on ubiquitous Internet availability.

The Dragon Age timeout is hilariously long. I had to let it sit on "Connecting to servers" for about 5 minutes before it gave up.

Jesus christ, just make it 60 seconds tops.

Sony continued to have problems for several days (and some users still can't connect). It's probably an after effect of being DDoS'ed.

I've been playing the Last of Us instead of Destiny... I've just realised I haven't seen any trophies pop up :( Does that mean I won't get any or does the game know I've got them and I'll get them when PSN is back up?

Insanely stupid that Kim Dotcom gave them $300,000 worth of vouchers just like that.

That essentially means that they have a ton of funds to hire more botnets when they next decide to be dicks and go at MS and PSN again..

Kim Dotcom is a scumbag and it's likely a marketing ploy.

yeah marketing for his new "protected browser"

If anything I wouldn't be surprised if he thought up the whole thing.

As for Lizard Squad, the fact the addresses of them are now out there, I would imagine if they're correct they'll be begging to be arrested, as others may not be so kind.

-A member of the Lizard Squad hacking group, who goes by the alias “ryanc” or Ryan, allegedly garnered the attention of a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

-Ryan is said to be 16-17 years old and lives in Finland.

-According to Finnish police he is a "known" person. So he probably has prior violations. Criminal liability in Finland starts when you turn 15, you can not be prosecuted before that. Those who are under 21 are young offenders.

-Finland does not extradite its own citizens under any circumstances, even when the perpetrator wills it.

-In United States a person can be sentenced to 10-20 years for seriously disturbing communication networks. In Finland the punishment is usually a "conditional discharge", though in serious cases you might sit few months in prison.

Translated from Finnish sources like MTV and Helsingin Sanomat. It is hard to comprehend why this Ryan character decided to give an interview in a way that police was able to instantly identify him? He probably has nothing to lose financially speaking and it's probably better to go through the criminal process now since he will only receive a short sentence that will be off-the books after a few years.

I didn't realise he'd spent time in jail for the bomb threat on that plane the Sony exec was traveling on.

I wounder if any of the users logging in without changing MTU, maybe always had it set below 1500 by default ?. I mean, if its set to "auto", does it always default to 1500 ?, or does it depend on the router and may be set below 1500 by default depending on a persons router or connection type ?.

Oh! Haha maybe Not. I'm home soon I'll check. I just thought the generic ones would have been earnt ("reached the subway" or whatever) but maybe not

I'm new to this whole trophy business
Last of Us is veeeery stingy with the trophies, haha. You get them for beating the game but I don't think there's chapter specific ones. Uncharted's the same, from what I recall. Lots of trophies in Uncharted for "kill x number of enemies with weapon y" though.

That is pretty weird...

Why refuse to change a setting that takes seconds and has no visible adverse effects? You can change it back in seconds once this thing blows over.

I connected without changing the MTU, and it worked without any problems for me. My sister however, who lives about 1 hour from me, she had to change the MTU settings to logon. I dont live in a very big country, so i assume that we both connect to the exact same PSN server. We have a different internet service provider though.

I been able to connect, so far without interruption, the last 2 days and I never touched the mtu setting.
