Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

I think the contention comes from hearing the arguments being made in the podcasts and how flimsy, contradictory or just plain bad they are. Like Jeff complaining about how chaotic smash is the only time its good and then criticizing it for being chaotic.

Yeah the absurd leaps of logic they make to justify their opinions are more aggravating than the opinions themselves.

the hyperbole is kinda grating on these podcasts. I understand that they have to convince each other but it just becomes repetitive and kind of absurd. patrick and alex are quite bad with it. not everything is the best or worst ever

as someone who hasn't played unity, I still don't understand why its awful. it by all means could be, but that exchange was just a lot of shouting about chests and not much else. what about the design made it poor compared to the last one? I still don't know

when jeff goes on a tirade about destiny it actually hits home because he's considered with his opinions, knows the genre and isn't prone to over exaggerating. that makes it worth listening to.
I think there's just too many people involved this year.

So, Mordor wins, right? The recap play through order might give it away? "And now another look at the user voted and winner of best game, etc"

I was/am holding out hope for Bayonetta.

This is the first series of goty podcasts I have tuned into...so I cant say if its always like this, but it just seems like they exhaust their good points for/against a game in the opening argument. When the choices narrow, so do their good arguments

Should be interesting tomorrow....but I think Bayo 2 appears to be a clear winner, they all seem to like that game alot.

I don't think so. Drew+Jason have barely said anything, so even though theres technically more people than usual it doesn't sound like it. They've also been pretty good about not just talking over one another.

Is there a reason long debates don't just... End in a vote? It seems like a natural, fair way of ending some of the prickly discussions.

Because it isn't fun.

Yes, this is kind of how it always goes.

As someone noted, the Skyrim vs. Saints Row 3 horror of 2011 got to some really amazing arguments, like "You fight too many ice guys in Skyrim" and "Saints Row isn't better than Skyrim, it has mediocre combat and glitches."

Alberto brought up last year's attempts to keep Mario 3D World off the list, including "it has cat powers and cats are internet memes so Nintendo was just using internet memes" and "the levels are too wide."

This comment always blew my mind. "Mediocre" would be about as positive as I could get about Skyrim's combat.

Because democracy is broken, the only way to truly know who is right is to find out who is most stubborn about their opinion. That's clearly the correct one.

Did Jeff actually call Dark Souls a bad game? I mean I don't really like GB at all but that's just a hot mess of an argument.

I'm still so raw over that Skyrim/SR3 discussion

It was probably my favourite GOTY discussion though. Say what you will about it, but even if it didn't always make sense at least they were arguing passionately for their choices. I prerfer that to last years whimper of a "yeah I guess TLOU"

I wonder if The Fall is going to make it on the top 10 of the year. They've been showering it with praise in several categories.

Saints Row vs Skyrim has at least an hour of the most circular arguing about problems both games have, which is what makes it the most excruciating GOTY they've ever done. "Buggy" is used against Saints Row in the weirdest case of glass house stone throwing ever.

It's seems like Vinny has been giving it the most praise out of all of them....I expect it to be either 1 or 2 in his list

Who were the 2 contenders last year ? TLoU and GTAV ?

Because the crew's votes aren't all worth the same. Brad or Jeff easily override anything Alex or Drew say, if they really want to.

or as jeff would say: because voting is for suckers

Came down to TLOU vs Link Between Worlds. I dont know if I'm remembering it wrong, but I recall them gushing over Zelda for 2minutes and then immediately after when they voted on GOTY everyone says TLOU except Jeff.

GTA wasn't in the top ten. It was between Last of Us, Link Between Worlds, and Bioshock.

I still can't believe AC4 got in over GTAV.

I remember Brad said that GTA had boring mission design "drive here, press button, drive back" were his words. He didn't even get past the second heist.

And yet somehow he thought AC4 was better, which still had shit tier completely forgettable mission design, a terrible story, and bunk ass mechanics (like stealth gameplay).

Granted I haven't listened to all the podcasts yet, so hopefully Brad can atone for his sins by praising GTAV this year (if they will allow that).

The PS4 version was in his personal top 10 for this year.

Holy shit, this was terrible. I had to keep pausing to go do other things cause I couldnt take it.

I totally understood where he was coming from. I had to force myself to finish the story in GTA V. I liked the characters but the story was poor, I just didn't enjoy it. AC4 however I did everything in the single player. Only reason I don't have a platinum trophy in that game was because I didn't care to do multiplayer.

AC4 was just so much more fun imo. I kept playing that game well after I finished the story... I never played GTA V again after finishing the last mission.

I dunno, looking back I think that GTA V had severe problems with pacing, whereas AC 4 didn't. AC 4 got you into the best part of that game (the ship combat and open seas) quite quickly and kept you there the majority of the game.

GTA V's problem was that there was too much mission padding in between its best element (the heists) and in my opinion the best missions in GTA V were all loaded at the front and back of the game. Lots of the stuff in the middle of GTA V was really boring.

He probably didn't play much of AC4 either

Man, this years goty podcasts are hard to listen to at times. Brad calling Smash just plain boring is insane. Its hilarious how Brad and Jeff keep hating on Nintendo on every podcast when they're bringing out the most polished games this year. Kinda sad. But hey, opinions.

"Celebrating bad games"- Jeff in regards to Smash.

Yet he keeps celebrating the same bullshit game design that's hurting modern games. Look at his list. Pretty funny.

It's fine if he doesn't like it but it'd be nice if he actually gave it a real chance. I can tell that he didn't because when I watch him play on streams I notice he doesn't do very basic techniques like smash moves (he mainly just does tilt moves) and recovery moves. Jeff at least has a basic understanding of the game.

I don't think Mordor will win Best Game. Brad and Vinny won't vote for it for lore reasons. Jeff likes it but doesn't love it. Only ones who will really fight for it at the top are probably Dan and Patrick. I think it'll be Bayonetta. They all really love Bayonetta.

I think Mordor will win Game of the Year, but I wouldn't be suprised if Jeff and Dan make a play for Far Cry 4. Its been on almost everyone's top 10 but Jeff and Dan in particular seem to really dig it.

They're both just the most close minded guys of the group. Kinda sad because I think Brad would like all the technical aspects to Smash and just how different each character is. The amount of characters and how they all have their own gimmic, actually reminds me of DOTA.

But Brad or Jeff would never even want to hear it. Oh welll

no-one knows how to dodge roll

I was so glad Jason was in control of the Bayo GOTYlook and I still thought he was a bit staidfast for my tastes... but then I play Bayo like I'm a goddamn crazy person, so I dunno

I mean, Brad and Jeff both put it as their #3s on their personal lists. I think expecting them not to fight for it might be a mistake.

I love how Skyrim vs Saints Row 3 is still being brought up. lol

That said, we all know that history has sided with Saints Row 3 as being the best game that year.

Counting the votes available so far (using the Formula 1 2014 season point scale) and throwing out games that people won't fight for, this is the top ten I've come up with:

  1. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
  2. Bayonetta 2
  3. Far Cry 4
  4. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
  5. Wolfenstein: The New Order
  6. Destiny
  7. P.T.
  8. South Park: The Stick of Truth
  9. Kentucky Route Zero
  10. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes

If the guests got to vote instead, the top ten would be:

  1. Nidhogg
  2. Mario Kart 8
  3. Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor
  4. Alien: Isolation
  5. Shovel Knight
  6. The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth
  7. South Park: The Stick of Truth
  8. Diablo III: Reaper of Souls
  9. Super Smash Bros for Wii U
  10. Super Smash Bros for 3DS

If the game was actually chaotic you couldn't do stuff like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wH55tLRYqk

You just need to respect the game and learn how to actually play it.

Sorry, but nothing about that looked fun to me and I really didn't get what was going on. It looked like a bunch of random movement, not some skilled play. I don't have that problem with just about any other competitive game series.

How is that not skill-based? You have to separate your dislike of the game/series from whether the game can be played at a high level.

Do you have even the barest understanding of how Smash works at all? Doesn't really sound like it.

And for the record, a really good player trashing an average player doesn't usually look fun. I was trying to demonstrate that in fact the game is not chaotic and if you know what you're doing the game is very skill intensive.

Honestly, I don't know what more to say. If you had even a cursory understanding of the game's mechanics and metagame then you wouldn't be saying stuff like this anyway.
