Just bought Destiny....newbie tips please!

This is bad advice. No one has time to gear all three classes.

The real advice is to level three characters of the same class, so you have two extra rolls each week.
I rather have each class, you don't have to go hard-core with each one.

For example, I like my hunter just for pvp

Denial? What do you gain by derailing a thread that is about tips on how to survive in Destiny? Explain that besides absolute boredom on your behalf.

The OP asked for tips. People already told him numerous times, before I even posted, telling him to return the game. That is legitimate advice. It seems more like the defense force derailed the thread with their attacks on everyone else.

Your anger at what I think of a thread is hilarious. It's not like I even said something negative, just matter of fact.

So your argument is that the OT isn't only people looking for other raiders because PSN was down for a few days and they complained about that instead during that timeframe? How again does that prove that it's a great game?
Where's all that evidence to back up your claims, huh? Till then, bye!

Beautiful graphics, excellent sound and music and some of the best shooting "feel" I've ever experienced. Destiny has all of that.

It also doesn't have very much in the way of story and the actual "directed" content is somewhat slim. Therefore the actual fun comes in when you group up with folks and go on strikes, raids, pvp and even random patrols. The most important thing that you can know about Destiny is that it is most rewarding for those who play together. Start grouping up, play with friends (or make some new ones) and enjoy the ride.

Wow the first few posts in this thread are embarrassing.

If you don't have IRL friends to play with hook up with Destiny GAF. Having people to play with is integeral for this game. I say give it a shot. It will either blow you away or you will hate it. Worth a try. If you don't like it trade it in or sell it.

Do me a favor though if you hate, maybe post why somewhere and leave it at that. Don't go into every single Destitny thread and spew hatred like some kind of maniac.

Same place your lack of evidence is...in the OT.
I'm sorry, who was the one who said OT is nothing but posts looking for groups? You have nothing to show for it. You're completely ignorant to the ongoings in the OTs.

I have nothing more to say to you. You think we're the one being defensive when it's you. You had several here asking you to provide proof but all you do is post "why so defensive?" when backed into a corner.

Farewell and have a nice day. I'm done here.

OP: It's unfortunate that your inquisitive post has turned into the daily Destiny hate thread by those who simply can't accept that some people enjoy Destiny. As others said, ask your questions in the post on the Community side of GAF. You will find a great community of Destiny players that will answer your questions without making you feel like an addict for buying and enjoying the game. And unlike the haters on the gaming end will preach to you, most are not blind to the game's faults, they just happen to enjoy what the game does great: Gunplay and raiding/playing with your friends.

Have fun and play it until you see that you need to grind. Level +20 grind or even the worse Level 26+ or the hunt for raw materials want to kill yourself Level 28+.

Wow this is the shittiest thread I' ve seen in a while. OP asks for tips and people can't help but give their negative opinion for the forty-eighth time. Not at all helpful.

My tips

- Your personal vault is your friend, especially if you wind up playing multiple characters. Everything you possess can be put in the vault to either save or pass to other characters. It's a great resource.

- If you find a weapon that you absolutely love then put it in the vault once it becomes underpowered. Two reasons: first of all in multiplayer the weapons are scaled so your uncommon hand cannon that you love can be just as effective as a rare or exotic. Second if you do decide to try another character then they will have a nifty present waiting for them as they advance in level.

- Found amazing equipment for another class? Like I said before, vault it in case you ever play that class. If Destiny clicks with you then there is no feeling like getting a new character to Level 20 and having a whole suit of purple armour waiting for him. You can always dismantle it later if you choose.

- In time you will need at least three weapons in every catagory. Expect to hold onto ten of your favourite weapons on your character for various uses. You will only ever wear one suit of armour though, at least for right now.

- Why so many weapons? Shield breaking. Blue, red, and purple shields are easily taken down by their corrisponding weapons. One of each type in every weapon catagory is desirable.

- Gear gets levelled up a lot when you cash in bounties. It's everything you're weilding or wearing so be sure to have what you wanted leveled in hand. Holding a maxxed out weapon? Weild another one instead so the points are not wasted. This includes your character sub-class! Once you've maxxed out your sub-class of choice then you can upgrade the second sub-class without ever even using it in the field.

- Dismantling a piece of maxxed out equipment yeilds more materials then a new piece of the same type, but not by much. In the end it's not really worth it. Just bust up new equipment you don't want. You will get a bit less materials but save time. In this case saving time is better.

- You can raise the level of stories and strikes. Take a look if you gain additional rewards for doing so. It's spelled out when you raise the difficulty of missions.

- Burn through story missions as fast as you can. Leave the Strikes on each planet for a bit later. The strikes will be a fair bit higher level for you when you've completed the stories around it. Just continue to a different planet and revist the strike in a few levels.

- The Crucible is fantastic. Once you unlock it you could spend a lot of your time just in the PVP. The rewards are decent and it adds a lot to the game. Destiny maps make good use of your character movement and the matches are quite moving and fluid.

- The Vanguard strike list is the flip-side of the Crucible. Total cooperative play and the game does matchmaking for you. You can meet some nice people doing this and make friends for future play.

- Once you get to Level 20 you can concern yourself with faction reputation and marks. Don't worry about it until then, you won't have missed anything.

I hope you enjoy it!

Golden rule with coop games applies tenfold here: play with friends.

Also, shame on everyone shitting the thread, and those cheering them on.

He asked for tips on the game don't be ridiculous

How dense are you? By this logic I should go into every advice thread for games I hate and tell them to shred the disk.

Pro tip!

If you are a Chevy guy and your friend is a Ford guy, and he buys a Mustang and asks you for advice on how to change the oil, do you tell him his Mustang is a piece of shit and that he should go and buy a Camaro?

Same place your lack of evidence is...in the OT.

The OTs are transparent mate. We can all see them. Try not to forget then when you tell us they are what they're not.

Lots of unique users there who are enjoying the game. Even if we removed all the lfg and negative posts we'd still be at an impressive amount of OTs.

The thing is, the Destiny OT has evolved into a rather large sub-community of neogaf that revolves entirely around enjoying the game. If you can't see how that's valuable as a reference when discussing if the game is worth playing then I don't know what to say.

Why? The game is garbage. Call Sony and try to get a refund. Otherwise have fun playing a mediocre game that totally doesn't respect your time.

P.s I also got a refund from Sony for that horrid game. They really are the best .

Holy Shit did Destiny hurt you?. Every fucking thread you have come into regarding Destiny like a goddamn broken record that you got a refund

JESUS FUCK GIVE IT A FUCKING REST!

We get it, the game is mediocre to you, you don't need to come to your 38th Destiny thread and post the same stupid shit which never moves along the debate and with the piss poor, "I gotta refund!, lulz" post every fucking time

Sick and tired of this bullshit on GAF

The game has it merits, rather than debate those as these gaming forums are suppose to do, most of ya'll keep harping the same ol' shit over and over, give it a rest, we get it, the OP asked for tips, not your "I got my monies back, I'm good" or "Return that shit OP, cause I only invested < 5 hours, shot at a fucking cave for my phat loots and know all the facets of the game"

Best advice I can give you OP is go to the OT in Gaming Community and read the first post, Hawkian has listed information + detailed outlines for how to progress in Destiny
Game is social in nature, you'll have more fun with others to play with, rather going the lone wolf/solo approach

I would write a whole essay on how to destiny, but it will just get buried by the countless drive-by poster who feel vindicated by saying they got a refund/got credit back

Once again, thanks to everyone who has contributed their tips. Especially to those who have written lengthy posts to help me out :) I will be jumping in this evening to see what it's all about.

Main lesson learnt today: Check for OT before posting new thread.

Have fun and play it until you see that you need to grind. Level +20 grind or even the worse Level 26+ or the hunt for raw materials want to kill yourself Level 28+.

See, this is what I mentioned earlier, this kind of "info" is wildly out of date and just plain wrong. The grind is real, but doesn't have to be anything like what it was since the Vanguard began selling gear with 33 light items and both the Vanguard and Crucible guys started to sell planetary materials for their respective marks. Add in a 36 light exotic from Xur and you're 31 before you know it... anyone can get there with relative ease now. When you think what many of us did to get to 30 it's almost laughably easy to better that now and no doubt it'll be a similar situation in March when the next DLC drops and light 34 is the cap.

It's probably safe to back away from your thread now, armed with your new knowledge, Have a fun evening tearing through the story - that part is best done alone, you'll learn more about the game that way. Then see what the game expects of you after that, when you're level 18 or so, and feel free to see if any GAFers would like to take you few a through strikes and show you the ropes of post-"campaign" Destiny by posting in the OT. I bet you'll be raiding by next week lol.

We regularly admit we have issues.

hah, solid words.

Right on.

OP just come to the OT, friend.

It's not an echo chamber of disillusioned gamers who can't admit the game they're addicted to is bad, we know exactly what we are. We regularly admit we have issues.

BRAVO!!!!

So goddamn sick and tired of every fucking Destiny thread turning into the shit you described. Some may not like it but goddamn it some of us do fucking like the game. Others don't like it when their threads for the games they like are shitted up then maybe they should have the respect to not shit up other folks threads.

Yeah totally playing the same content over again with modifiers for drops is so different then what we do in Destiny.

Not really nephalem rifts are fresh everytime and different. Different enemy's with different attacks, different tiles also different end bosses and then you have Greater Rifts everytime you kill a boss in time you can up in a higher greater rift that is even tougher but more change on greater loot. Also the loot is better because of the RNG drops and only drop for your class and i can at least change the stuff what i do not like for a better stat. Then you have the vault where it rains gold with even more loot..you don't have that in destiny right? Stop talking out of your ass if you haven;t played the game. Played more then 400 hours and it never gets bored.

See?

The raids are some of the most fun I've had playing any game. The grind is real, but that doesn't mean all the endgame content is boring.

I play both games dude I have 300 hours in both. One of us talking out of their ass and it's not me. You like Diablo so you defend its mechanics of changing modifiers for fresh content. I get it.

I just don't understand why the haters can't just have one OT "I hate destiny" thread they can live in, why is it OK to shit up every destiny thread made on this side of the forums. Imagine if we did this in a halo or bloodborne topic, heads would roll

Agreed.

I see tons of hate here. Destiny (and ffxiv) made up most of my gaming time in 2014. I still enjoy destiny thoroughly and have fun every time I turn it on.

I think some people had unreal expectations and since it didn't meet some gamers perfect game criteria, they do everything in their power to bash the game like it just slapped their mother.

Just start playing OP. Be social and use a mic and I'm confident you will enjoy your time with Destiny.

The raids are some of the most fun I've had playing any game. The grind is real, but that doesn't mean all the endgame content is boring.

And unique to the FPS genre.

And the FPS parts themselves are top tier.

The parts that compel are pretty damn compelling.

See?
All I see is you praising a game that was absolute crap when it came out in 2012, with drop rates worst than destiny, and when you got a drop the stats didn't even gel with your class.

I see you praising a game that took years to get the formula right

Destiny is 4 months old.. 4 months

It's not OK. The hammer is swinging. Mods don't play favorites when it comes to certain games.

OP what's your PSN name? Could always use more DestinyGAF on my friends list!

I've heard the gunplay is good, this is the first mention i've heard of the raids being good. what's special about them?

They're the most co-op intensive things I've ever done. They have a ton of mechanics that you just don't see in shooters, like one party member picking up a melee item called "the relic" that creates an energy bubble to shield other party members who kill things called "oracles" before their very existence wipes the party--oh, and while this is going on, the other three party members are busy trying to open a portal so the relic team can get out to shoot the final boss.

And that's one phase of one raid.

I play both games dude I have 300 hours in both. One of us talking out of their ass and it's not me. You like Diablo so you defend its mechanics of changing modifiers for fresh content. I get it.

Destiny = Vanilla Diablo 3..it has potential but so flawed in many many ways. Adventure Mode is the meat of the game a long with Bounty's,Nephalem Rifts,Greater Rifts and with patch 2.1.2 on the horizon it will be even better. That is where the longevity is in reaper of souls the rifts because it is never the same.

All I see is you praising a game that was absolute crap when it came out in 2012, with drop rates worst than destiny, and when you got a drop the stats didn't even gel with your class.

Destiny is 4 months old.. 4 months

Your talking about something that happened 2 years ago. And i don't care if it is 4 months it is on the same boat as Diablo 3 was 2 years ago..it is uttershit. Reaper of Souls redeemed the whole game and Blizzard and it shows.
