Just bought Destiny....newbie tips please!

Once again, thanks to everyone who has contributed their tips. Especially to those who have written lengthy posts to help me out :) I will be jumping in this evening to see what it's all about.

Main lesson learnt today: Check for OT before posting new thread.

To wash away against all this filth that Destiny somehow festers in these soul-less bastards not trying to even aid you on tips why you shouldn't be playing besides the "I got refundz!" posts, I'm gonna help you out

You starting tonight, you have choice of 3 classes

Titan, Warlock, Hunter.
Titan are Strength + Formidable
Warlocks are Intelligence + Space Magic
Hunters are Agility + Sneakiness

There are 2 subclasses to choose from each class. Choose which role you would like to do.

Start the Main Story and progress through it till you hit level 5 and start doing "Bounties", this is your reputation earner/xp booster/life blood to the games cyclical nature
Try to finish Main Story by level 18, which would put you on equal footing on "Normal" versions of the sorry missions
Hit 20 and start earning marks, there's 2 types, PvE and PvP
You can earn 100 marks for each category weekly, but there's a 200 mark cap, so after 2 weeks of maxing out, you better spend marks, or lose them until you spend them

I'm just giving you a fast explanation, not fully detailing every step, cause that would take too f'n long

Start doing Strikes that are in the Vanguard playlist and earn Rare (Blue) level gear appropriate to your level, can even sneak up a level if need be
If your level 22, go do level 22 strikes, can try to push yourself and get rewarded from 24, 26 will be to much
The game will not start gelling for you at least into week 2, so if you can at least hold out until then, you start tiering yourself out and reach the top quite easily and not take the way these detractors that are so salty in this thread have done

Your talking about something that happened 2 years ago. And i don't care if it is 4 months it is on the same boat as Diablo 3 was 2 years ago..it is uttershit. Reaper of Souls redeemed the whole game and Blizzard and it shows.
Yeah, at least destiny servers worked at launch though.
You said it yourself, game needs time, they said that themselves. Why can't Bungie 'redeem' it as well.

I personally don't need redemption, the game has flaws, but it is a lot of fun, especially playing with others.

I'm REALLY glad to see the immature posters who regurgitate the same old "return it" BS banned and I feel sorry for those who can't help but come and shit on the game whenever they get the chance--gotta wonder about the mental stability/maturity of people who aren't able to move on from a game they didn't enjoy.

Enjoy your purchase fellow guardian. Destiny was also my GOTY. I haven't touched much of anything else since my ghost revived me on launch day.

My #1 tip: play with people you know. Everything else will fall into place if you do this. Their collective knowledge will be imparted to you and they will help you through the content until you become acclimated to the ins and outs of the game.

OP if you can and am sure hes still playing link up with Hawkain, dude is one of the most chill GAF members around and always has the time and info to help out new & veteran players alike.

We used to play together in Guild Wars 2 great fun and dude most def took care of everyone who partied up.

Personally I love the game. Shame I can't share my stats/levels cross platform, I'd love to pick it up for my xbox one as well, currently have it for PS3/PS4.

I like playing solo most of the time. Doing mostly farming, joining the occasional crucible/vanguard. I know many people think it repetitive, but if you've played mmorpg's you spend a lot of time grinding/farming (I used to do a lot of that with my Beastmaster and Thief on FFXI) so its not new to me and it actually is fun if your ok with leveling slowly and collecting loot. You can turn in a lot of your farming goods for rank to help if you don't get to play with a team much.

One of the reasons I don't group much is because of family so I play in spurts, unfair to people if I join an event and have to leave or afk often so I don't mind wandering solo. I do play with real life friends when I can.

Don't let people turn you off. Most of the games people say are the greatest games I sometimes tend to find boring myself, its all your personal taste.

I can see why its not for everyone, but I say give it a real go, you really do get more out of it the more you level.

Oh another tip, when in the crucible, don't be shy about using your super, and always pick up team mates orbs of light, it will replenish your supers energy (orbs of light drop when you use your super)

Money (glimmer) is shared across all characters created (As are weapons via the vault in the tower)

Agreed.

Destiny is extremely fun.

I recommend Warlocks as your starting class. Hunters are a bit harder to get into unlike Titans and Warlocks as they have no AoE special, you have to time their jumps just right, and they're no tanks like the other two. Hunters don't have a high armor rating like Warlocks and especially Titans, but they're the most agile of the three. Titans are great for both PvP and PvE, with the Denfender subclass being the most useful subclass in the game for PvE. Warlocks have revive but to get that perk you need to spend about 15-20 hours unlocking the Sunsinger class perks. Sadly, since you're a newbie, you won't unlock the second subclasses (Defenders, Bladedancers, and Sunsinger) till you reach level 15 and once you do, you'll have to start all over unlocking the simplest skills for that subclass. I suggest reading on the three classes and their respective subclasses before starting the game. Like others suggested, head over to OT. Hawkian has several guides worth reading in the first post for any new players.

New to Destiny, been playing it about a week and only up to level 13. A few times now my wife, after watching me play for a few minutes, has asked me what this game is about. What's the story? What the hell is Tyrion going on about? I have no idea.

I do know that so far it's been a hell of a lot of fun to run around on the moon shooting things and picking up a new shiny every so often. I'm well aware I'm being taken advantage of in terms of the game stringing me along for hours and hours on the promise of nicer equipment, higher levels and so on, and I'm honestly ok with it. As a late arrival, having already read many negative GAF posts about the RNG grind has appropriately set my expectations, and for that reason I'm having a lot of fun with it rather than feeling beat down by it. I know what I signed up for. That said, I do expect that my fascination with the environments and gun play will likely fizzle out long before I hit endgame level/equipment, and I have no desire or intention of grinding through it.

I actually think (imo) the best place to learn is the crucible, what is killing you or stopping you? Jealous enough to want that power? Go for it

Also observable in strikes, unless everyone is the same class

Don't listen to him.

Hunter is the way to go.

Don't listen to him.

Hunter is the way to go.

I don't play Destiny anymore but you've always been in denial about this.

And don't think I have forgotten my goal about shooting every Hunter with the mythoclast.

That might happen all the way in Destiny 3, but it will happen.

My number one piece of advice (and you will know this if you read Hawkian's guides but I can't stress it enough):

DON'T FUCK WITH FACTIONS UNTIL YOU GET RANK 3 IN VANGUARD!

It's extremely convoluted and the game doesn't explain this well enough, but equipping faction items (Bonds, Cloaks, Titan Marks) means all the reputation you earn will go to leveling that faction. You DON'T want to do this yet because you can only buy stuff from the vendors after you've ranked them up to level 3 and the Crucible and Vanguard vendors have way more stuff on sale than the Factions do. So why focus on Vanguard first? Because marks (the currency you use to buy stuff from the vendors) are easier to earn with Vanguard, will be earned a lot more through natural play unless you play a lot of Crucible and with the 200 mark cap in place, it is totally possible to max out your marks LONG before you have enough experience in the Vanguard to even be able to buy stuff. This is a really bad thing since you can only earn 100 marks a week and anything over the 200 limit will just be wasted. You want to spend those marks before you hit the cap even if it means dismantling it for extra materials/pats. So focus that first, then I would recommend focusing on Crucible because they have a lot of great weapons on sale, THEN once they're both at Rank 3, focus on a faction.

Wow this thread became a graveyard.

Anyways first of all #WarlockMasterRace. Extremely useful in PvP and PvE with lots of different options in play styles. Sunsinger subclass is absolutely amazing and should be leveled up immediately once gotten.

Save your strange coins for Xur exotics, look for groups in the community thread, do daily bounties, don't buy the DLC until you are craving new content. Icebreaker is best sniper rifle, Gjallahorn is best rocket launcher(which i have neither of those).

And as a warning, this game really doesn't respect your time, don't get obsessed with raising numbers for the sake of raising numbers, it's easy to get super addicted.

Warlock is the worst class for scrubs who die all the time.

Almost everyone is either a Warlock or a Hunter. There are less titans than those two classes in the game on PS4 alone.

In terms of accessibility
Warlocks > Titans > Hunters

I'm only taking into account the starting subclass for that ranking.

Don't listen to him.

Hunter is the way to go.
Shouldn't you be surprised I didn't suggested the best class, Titan? :P

It's not ok! Quick, everyone go edit your posts before I see you shitting in the thread!

That's one helluva Happy New Year's Eve to a lot of people. Graveyard up in here.

To the OP, just play the game. Seriously, it's a really fun game despite a terrible story for the first 20 levels. I had a helluva time just playing it. I had less and less fun as I got higher in Light level though.. by the time I hit 28 I hated the game.. but honestly I got a good 30-40hrs of entertainment before that point.

It's a game that doesn't really respect your time with it, and there's ZERO payoff to playing the single player.. but since my kid won't let me sell it.. I sometimes like to just run patrol and shoot some mutherfuckers cause the game does THAT very well. I hate the bullet sponge bosses, the horrible mission structures, the lack of Raid matchmaking, and a story Ed Wood could have one upped.

That said, still you'll have fun.. just play it.

Do the story first do bounties as they show up while you do story

In between stories do cruciable and any other side stuff they allow you to do

Once you hit 20 start doing more bounties and strikes till you get to 26 and then start raiding

At this point you'll be grinding with friends and having a blast takes a day at most to hit 20

The raids are some of the most unique things in gaming at the moment imo and a ton of fun

Check into places like destiny db and reddit if possible for more shared info

Tell the wife, a long time ago Darkness came and paid a visit to our solar system. It came to extinguish the Light that a savior had been giving away. Which you can't control, you fear, which shines it's light into the Darkness extinguishes the shadows they cower in.
The solar system we know has expanded, civilizations were risen of different planets with different purposes, "The Golden Age", but Light has a weakness, it does flutter from time to time from shining so bright and lets the Darkness consume it.
You are a Guardian from the little light left, an ember to re-awaken the Light to it's full majesty.
You go through challenges to reach that penultimate goal, but the darkness keeps spreading. Even Light + Dark clash within the same boundaries, we are the one who hold the key to push one of those elements over the other, that is the choice a Guardian makes.

THERE WAS A FIREFIGHT!

Now that 1. the new legendaries require commendations, and 2. it's no longer possible to trade materials for Crucible marks, you can safely ignore the factions entirely if you don't really like PvP.

Explanation: A commendation is something you get every time you bring a faction to rank 3 or higher. Helmets, chest armor, and weapons all require one of these in addition to a large number of Vanguard or Crucible marks. Because of this, you may want to keep leveling up Vanguard after rank 3 if you prefer PvE to PvP you want their gear.

You're the one in denial.

Sunsingers are asset to team.

Perhaps hunters need a battle rez themselves in their third spec since everyone and their mom plays them and die in raids, ruining everything.

There is no need to be upset.

Once again, thanks to everyone who has contributed their tips. Especially to those who have written lengthy posts to help me out :) I will be jumping in this evening to see what it's all about.

Main lesson learnt today: Check for OT before posting new thread.

Since you're starting out, just play through the story until you unlock the bounties from the robot in front of the tower.

Then you just keep playing through, checking in with the bounty guy every day so you can either turn in your completed missions or to accept new ones. Make sure you try to complete these every day because it's going to be important later on.

The completion of the campaign is when the grind first starts. Your main goal now at that point is to get new armor that will raise your "light" (other games just call it level). The best way to go about this is to purchase legendary tier armor, which is background shaded purple from the vanguard. You need to be at least level 2 reputation with the vanguard in order to purchase, which is earned by completing bounties.

Also, in order to purchase the armor, you also need to have a specific currency called vanguard marks. They are earned by doing daily story missions, participating in the daily events that occur during patrol, or by doing the strike playlist that unlocks once you complete the campaign. I recommend doing the daily bounty if you can, then doing the strike playlist based on your level.

Each armor piece is about 75 marks, with the head piece being about 120. I think the maximum you can earn each week is 100, so try to buy gloves, boots, then chest, then helmet last. Oh by the way, in order to purchase the chest piece and the helmet, you also need to have another currency called the vanguard commendation. Those are earned every time you increase the reputation level of the vanguard.

There's more to explain, but my post will run too long so I'll explain later if you're still interested.

Don't think you can blast past your way to the end game. There are just way too many gates for you to progress quickly. Vanguard marks weekly caps, vanguard commendations, and level reputation requirements are all just part of the gates Bungie implemented. It's a pain in the ass, and I have no idea who came up with this nonsense, but the gunplay is top notch and getting new gear can feel immensely rewarding.

The real question is whether or not you will be able to find the grind enjoyable. If you do, my PSN is theFLYINGPIGEON if you want to shoot me a friend request, and of course, the OT is filled with lovely people that are glad to help you out.

Finally, a page of real advice. Enjoy it, it's a fun game and definitely has enough hooks that it should keep you playing for quite some time. On any given day, after all this time, more friends on my friends list are playing Destiny than anything else.

My advice is to read up on the Destiny currency/economy. Making sense of reputation, marks (vanguard/crucible/etc.), glimmer, strange coins, motes of light, shards, commendations and upgrade materials is pretty important and fairly overwhelming at first.

That first page (and the rest of this topic too) is a ban festival wow. So much hate for Destiny on the gaming side.

On topic join us in the OT in community forum. Read the excellent guides in the OP of the OT and ask us all your questions in the OT too. We are a very friendly and helpful group over there. You will find a lot of great people to play with.

Play each class to around 10 to get a general feel.

When you max a class/weapon. When you turn in bounties or other rewards make sure to switch to your subclass and unmaxed weapons so they get the experience.

Crucible. Try to save your super for team battles or capture points. Don't be the one wasting a nova bomb just to kill one guy you could prob beat with your primary weapon.

Try to get a guild or group of people for late game content as there is currently no match maker.

Enjoy it, game gets a lot of shit(some justified) but overall I think it is a solid product and play it almost daily when i get time.

Always do the bounties you find easiest first. You won't unlock a few bounties till you're level 5. Avoid Pulse Rifles cause they suck. A lot.

Remember this:
Your Intellect affects the cool down of your Super. The higher your Intellect rating is, the faster your Super cools down.
Discipline does the same but for your grenades only.
Strength too for your Throwing Knife (Hunters), Storm Strike (Titan), and Soul Sucking thing Warlocks have. It's a special Melee attack.

I was. :p

I'm also surprised how readily you admit that Hunters take more skill, though. ;)
The jumping puzzle was the bane of all Hunters everywhere.

Sunsingers are asset to team.

Perhaps hunters need a battle rez themselves in their third spec since everyone and their mom plays them and die in raids, ruining everything.

There is no need to be upset.

You get the flawless raider yet? :)
The jumping puzzle was the bane of all Hunters everywhere.

Say what? Triple jump and you can just skip the puzzle.
u wot m8

i'll space magic you into oblivion, then burn the surrounding area like an angel delivering judgement on inferior guardians.

I'll shoot you before you see me and then shoot you again when you self-rez.

I just hit level 30 without ever joining a clan or doing a raid or even doing a weekly strike (but only because the idiots at Bungie think matchmaking doesn't belong in those two modes). I lone-wolfed pretty much everything I did or used match-making for the strike playlist. I'm a hunter and I don't get the "hard to judge your jumps" nonsense other people have said. Hunter is incredibly easy to maneuver especially with triple jumping. Our specials are pretty darned weak though.

My advice is just get the story stuff out of the way. It's abysmal. Bungie should be ashamed of that aspect of the game. Then at level 20 pick a goal (weapon, armor etc) and focus on the requirements to get it. That's what I did, and eventually I was level 30. All of that will be much quicker/easier I assume if you play with friends. All of my friends unfortunately think Destiny is essentially Baby's First MMO, so I go it alone. The shooting and movement mechanics are unmatched imo. And whenever I'm bored, I just load Destiny and do a strike. They're a blast. My favorites oddly enough are the two that aren't available on Xbox One yet.

Also read up on Xur. You'll want to know where, and when, he is in end-game.

thank you thank you thank you

Now that (some of) the new legendaries require commendations and it's no longer possible to trade materials for crucible marks, you can safely ignore the factions entirely if you don't really like PvP.

True, the main reason I was grinding them was because I like the way their gear looks compared to the Vanguard and Crucible gear. Now that I'm set on that, I'm only grinding for the true exotics of Destiny: faction shaders.

This is incredibly good advice. I had to learn the hard way :(

I learned it the hard way as well :[ Considering the vendors are the most reliable way to level up past 20, I think it's one of the most important things to not get screwed on.

Feel like I'm repeating myself constantly but thanks for the contributions! Too many to thank personally but I do appreciate all the tips you guys are providing.

I will only have a short time on it tonight but I'll go over Hawkian's guides and post in the OT if/when I need more help.

Even if you do 1/5th of what I have done, you will Beaten Destiny at it's own Game!
Remember I'm an Outlier to the curve that is addicted to Destiny...

I started off with a Hunter and had a great time but then I realized if you want to get the most out of this game you should probably have one of each class. I found this was the best way to keep the game fresh for me. You can't really go wrong with any class they all have advantages and disadvantages but at the end of the day all are fun.

I recommend getting to 20 then grinding the Vanguard marks to buy gear to hit the higher levels then raid because that's where the real fun is at.

Looks like a mod had a field day with a Gjallarhorn in here.

Well done.

To the OP, see you in the OT!

Looking forward to have you on my friendlist soon. I must've added atleast 100 cool Gaffers, thanks to Destiny. Lol

Probably the best community I've ever experienced.

You're welcome, with the removal of the aggressive de-railers, I think this thread is a great opportunity to recruit others who are interested in the game
