Sony announces 18.5 million PlayStation 4 consoles sold WW

What free subs?

Every new psn account comes with a free trial subscription. The Holiday season inflates this number. Same goes for Xbox live which is why getting the number during the slow part of the year is more telling of the actual subscriber base.

Numbers don't really bear this out. There were somewhere around 85 million PS3's sold. The best selling Call of Duty (MW2) only sold about 5 million on the platform. The BEST selling title was Gran Turismo, at a little more than 10 million.

CoD and FIFA come out ever year.

Of course, 360 was the choice for multiplatforms, it performed better. Now it's PS4 and we'll start to see better bro sales numbers.

The free month that comes with buying the console.

Idk if those count though, but I think that's what that guy is getting at.

As far as I know there isn't a free month in Europe.
And besides that people with no interest in online gaming won't even bother to enter the code, because you have to enter a payment method IIRC.

Not a fan of the dirty ps+ numbers. I'd rather get that number in February, once all the free subscriptions expire.

I figured Sony would have dropped the ww number closer to npd to offset their loss this holiday. I guess it doesn't really matter though.

Dirty numbers is a funny way to put it.

CoD and FIFA come out ever year.

I addressed this in my edited post. It's not a different 5 million people buying COD or Fifa every year. it's the same base. Even if you assume the base buys only every OTHER game instead of EVERY game, and every game sells as well as MW2 (they don't) you would still only have a 10 million player base out of 85 million consoles sold for the best selling shooter on the platform.

Just like Uncharted 1, 2, and 3 selling 5-6 million copies each doesn't mean there are 15 million gamers out there playing it, just the same 5-6 million people rebuying the series.

Glad to see them back on top. Of the big three, they are the one that are most in tune with my taste. I wish they would use this momentum to somehow revive the Vita.

I scanned this whole topic and there are no comparable WW sales line charts for all the consoles. I'm disappointed math/sales-age GAF.

We need Aquamarine :(

And PS4 has been bombing in Japan, i can't imagine what is going to happen when SFVI, MGS, Bloodborne, FFXV and others are released.

There's always some churn. It's not just the same people every time.

There were other call of dutys, of course- but it's likely the same 5 million or so base buying them repeatedly. The BEST selling title was Gran Turismo, at a little more than 10 million.

Isn't this figure just launch only? MW2 sold 29m WW apparently, pretty sure it sold way more than 5m on PS3.

There's always some churn. It's not just the same people every time.

not enough to be significant, no. And churn tends to decrease the base, not increase it. It's more common for gamers to leave a series than they are to pick up a sequel in a franchise they've never played.

Again, even if you assume the base is somehow twice the size of the best selling entry in the COD franchise, it's still a tiny fraction of PS3's sold.

The assertion that consoles are "mostly for shooters and sports fans" doesn't hold water. The base is more diverse than that poster gave it credit for.

Sony hit on the perfect storm with the PS4. That E3 jab from Jack Tretton about DRM and used games was the nail in Microsoft's coffin.

Seems like NPD sales count double to some people.

People shouldn't forget that The world doesn't only consist of US and EU. Some emerging markets are emerging just fine :)

This is a thing because most gaming sites are US based.

While scoring big in the U.S. may matter to some people, most 3rd party publishers (especially small to mid-tier ones) will care about global numbers more, not just U.S. numbers.

Even if Microsoft does score big in the U.S., it won't be big enough to compare to the huge worldwide numbers that Sony will eventually have (including on what they have in the U.S.).

Good numbers for Sony. From a curiosity stand point I wonder where the Xbox One is for WW sold through to consconsumers. They should have hit say 12 million by now...right? I have no sales data so I'm pulling that figure at random.

Just goes to show how big the rest of the world is. Beating the PS4 in the US by a small margin wont do much at all to the overall console landscape for Microsoft. I hope they have some big plans for the later half of 2015 because Sony has a landslide of high quality games and will have the upper hand on the third party stuff.

LOL, CoD was selling 25-ish million at its peak. AT LEAST 10 million of that would have come from PS3 owners. And the best selling PS3 game is GTA V, which we can estimate being well over 15 million by now.

People forget that the Xbox One is an afterthought in all but 2 regions.
but console gaming in general is strongest in those 2 regions correct?
What? If anything, it increased over the last months...
in the last 2 months, the xbone outsold the Ps4 by quite a healthy margin. and we don't have npds for december but it is a pretty safe bet they won that month too.
Lol no. The gap has increased and will only continue to increase. The rate of increase will be determined by Xbox US and UK performance but it is inevitable that there will always be an increase in the gap for the rest of this generation. The war is over.
well last gen, the Ps3 also won all generations but the 2 (for most of the time), right? well the 360 was SO strong in the U.S that it was able to maintain its lead against the Ps3, even though the Ps3 was winning mostly everywhere else... what if the xbox's strength soon regurgitates in the xbone?
Well Sony sold 4.2 million PS4s in 2013, compared to 3 million Xbone's.

So no, the gap did not close in 2014. 2014 IS the gap!

That's 1.2 million more, but these consoles are gonna sell tens of millions, so in the great span of things, this 1.2 million gap isn't that huge.

These bros are most likely taking a jump to PS4 because of the better looking explosions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_games#Xbox_360

While PS3's exclusives sold more than annual games, we'll start to see how these games are going to sell more and more on PS4, because it is the best console for big explosions. We might get 50/50 split, or annuals sell even more than esclusives, we'll just have to wait and see. At least COD has sold strangely well on PS4 so far.

Are you ok?

Wii U was like 7 million leading into the holidays ... and PS4 has been selling greater than 2:1 versus XBone since launch.

Rough math says PS4 did that at around 14-15 million.

holy typos in my last post - I'm pretty fucked up lol

Well deserved, the consumers are probably enjoying the console as well unlike the Wii.

Anyway, Console gaming is strong and healthy as its ever been for Sony and MS since there selling the most they've ever had in the past.

All is good in gaming right now and for the future.

Around 10 or so million... shipped.

By their own words.

That is insane. Once the library gets cooking and more 3rd parties start pumping out games (especially Japan) the PS4 is going to possibly become the second best selling console in Sony's history.

Any number is just speculation right now.

What if cows can fly? No, not gonna happen. Xbone is inferior product compared to PS4, these days it's all about power.
