Are Transitions Lenses still a fashion faux pas?

Haha I didn't know people had such hatred of transitions, though that's the first time I've heard that term used for those glasses, when I first heard about them the term I heard was photogreys unless that's a different thing from transitions.

Anyway I have transitions or photogrey lenses or whatever, they're okay, I don't know if they're dorky or whatever (though I admit my obvious bias) I mean they basically look like regular glasses indoors at least, maybe is more obvious outside? They're perfectly clear indoors and outdoors they darken somewhat that's it, its just not a big deal, in fact the real bad thing about them is that they only darken somewhat, I feel like regular sunglasses would provide better protection.

Edit: Why do so many people bring up the whole nerdy thing or whatever, its a gaming forum what do you expect? Not every person can be super suave okay, you can take care of your appearance and look halfway decent and shit like that, I don't know just seems judgmental to me, but that's just my opinion.

I got a new pair of glasses and decided to try out transitions on them.

My prescription is about as mild as possible and I only really use them in my car or at night, and realized they didn't actually transition inside of my car. Also, outside in sunlight does make them dim SLIGHTLY, but not nearly enough to block out enough of the sun to be useful.

As far as any "stigma" is concerned, I never noticed anything. I'll usually take them off when I go inside because they take a minute or two to clear up, but I saw people reacting differently towards me when I wore them.

I ended up finding my old pair of glasses I thought I had lost, so I wish I had just bought a pair of prescription sunglasses that are actually effective in the situations I would use them in.

Big dork item. They never go completely dark and they only "transition" back to a murky brown.

Are they meant to go completely dark though? I know they're supposed to darken in sunlight but something being darkened and going completely dark aren't the same thing though I don't see how that makes it a "Big dork item" but whatever you did manage to touch on the real down side to them, that with transitions you get jack of all trades, master of none situation.

Why is there a stigma about transition lenses being super perverted?

There isn't. At all.

Just because a few people possibly on the internet said so does not mean it is true.

I've had transitions for 10 years now as I don't want to pay and keep swapping between two different glasses. They work amazing, you can barely tell their on or off as a user and they last a long time.

Only downside is not working through glass, such as a windshield in a car.

That isn't even remotely true. Mine go from completely see through to black.

They look silly because of the tint. Transitions just stick out like a sore thumb. Having a permanent haze around your eyes isn't aesthetically pleasing.

I'm not here to argue this. They are the shpants of eyewear.

Okay no need to take it so personally, I wasn't attacking you.

I don't even know what you mean by permanent haze, are you referring to the tint, because some transitions do go completely dark, and even with my glasses they don't go as dark as I would want, but they clear up fairly fast inside.

Mine go completely dark to black.

You can choose other colors than just brown now. There is also pink, red, yellow, light grey, dark grey (black), and then there is brown. You can also now choose the percentage of tint. Mine look like sunglasses outside, when I start heading inside in less than a minute later they are clear. The first pair I had took a while to transition, the ones I have now change almost instantly.

I was just saying it's fine if you like them for practical reasons. I just don't like them and there is still a stigma attached to them. Nobody is attacking anyone.

Seriously consider lasik. I went from 70/80 to 15/15 (nearly 10/10 during tests) with no side effects. I still have super robot vision 4 years later and regret not doing it sooner. Many places will do the preliminary eye testing for free and assist with medical loans for the procedure itself.

Well then.

I was about to get a pair of these with transitions lenses.
I won't be now, though. I had no idea there was a stigma, and I am extremely relieved as I was about to ruin a very expensive set of frames with dorky lenses.

EDIT: When I google "transitions lenses stigma" this thread is the first result and the only one alluding to this negativity. WTF?

I love my Transitions lenses and don't give a shit what other people think of them.

Mine amuse me because mine don't go black but turn a dark blue hue.

LOL okay so do transitions actually have a stigma in the real world or only on neogaf then? If they bother people so much, I'll just take them off when I enter buildings until they clear up, not a big deal, and it won't make seem like some rude asshole (hopefully)

I know I could get a pair of non transition lenses, but eh, if I were to make a change it would be to get contacts and I'm comfortable enough in my current situation for now, though that could change.

if you can't tell transition lenses are ugly, it's already too late

just put your regular eyeglass case in your girls purse and then swap glases when you enter buildings

I got transition lenses because I thought they would be cool.

I have since stopped wearing them outside.

I find it rather hilarious the number of comments alluding to never turning fully one way or another and the brown hue. Mine haven't had a brown hue in ages (you can choose) and go from extremely dark outside (equal to real sunglasses) to as clear as my non transition lenses inside. I've also never had them partially darken inside - be it a mall or otherwise. I guess all the buildings around here use UV blocking glass.

The worst you can fault them for is that they can transition a bit too heavily in certain weather conditions that your normally wouldn't really need them dark. That and the time they take to do the transition isn't instant. Still, I'll take take a slight inconvenience while they do their thing over lugging around a second pair of glasses all the time. Especially in the summer time when my pockets will already have a wallet and a phone occupying them.

They're certainly not perfect things, but no solution is.

Also, if anybody is mocking them that doesn't have vision problems, then they can take a hike. It's far easier to judge the fashion of things when not subject to problem they're supposed to address.

I don't know why people are so sensitive to the sun anyways. Just don't look directly into it?

Also this. Sunglasses are overkill 99% of the time. Unless you are at the beach or skiing or on the open water the sun isn't really that much of an issue with regular glasses.

This thread is slightly heartbreaking. So many posters just finding out that they are dorky looking

It's not like everyone is given a fashion manual at birth. How the fuck is anyone supposed to just know this shit? Fashion is fucking stupid.

I wouldn't take it so seriously, its all in good fun for the most part, though I'm sure most posters are being somewhat honest when they say they're dorky looking, but even if that's true so what?

I mean I myself have no interest in changing my glasses, because first of all new prescription glasses are expensive right, and I'd have to get prescription sunglasses too, plus I feel like even I could afford to get new glasses doing it because people on the internet said transitions are bad, just seems like I'm letting other people control my life, though maybe that's a crazy way to look at it?

I remember there was a stigma around them that labeled them either super nerdy, or super perverted.

My (super rad) prescription sunglasses were stolen, and I need new regular lenses, so I was thinking about going with the transitions.

I don't want to feel self conscious all the time wearing them!

There is no stigma. People who say that are probably just jealous because they didn't pay for the good ones.

I've got transition lenses in my glasses and unless you knew it in advance you wouldn't notice. The change is pretty rapid and it saves me from having to swap glasses every time I go indoor/outdoor.

Big dork item. They never go completely dark and they only "transition" back to a murky brown.

This is completely false. Inside, transition lenses are crystal clear, without a hint of tint.

If you're going to complain about the tech, at least focus on an actual shortcoming, rather than making things up. ;)

This is literally the first time I have heard people badmouthing transitions for anything other than not getting dark enough compared to regular sunglasses.

A Fashion faux pas? Really?

. People who say that are probably just jealous because they didn't pay for the good ones.

two pairs of glasses would cost more but look infinitely better.

just buy two pairs of glasses, people.

it'll be worth it to not look like a herb.

what are they

edit holy shit what is this magic
I had a great chuckle out of this.

So aside from trying to get over the fact that my mom had transition lenses (because my mom was definitely not cool), I've had them for the past 12 years and I love them. Just recently picked up some glasses from David Kind and made sure to get transitions with those too. Social stigma can go fuck itself in this case (not that I think there is one). My eyes are sensitive to light and they help me immensely.

How are they going to look better? Most of the "look" in glasses is the frame, not the lenses.

If you're indoor, transitions look just like non-transition lenses.

LOL, such an ignorant statement. Fair eyes are extremely sensitive to sunlight. Is sunscreen useless too?

frames for eyeglasses are shaped differently than frames for sunglasses

i've also never seen someone wear transition lenses in frames that actually look cool

and cargo pants

mad cargo pants in this thread

Do you apply sunscreen when you walk from the store to your car? I have blue eyes BTW.

No, but I wear sunglasses in in plenty of other situations besides the ones you described. Pretty much any time I'm outside or driving in the day I am wearing my sunglasses. Otherwise I end up squinting and subsequently get headaches.

Wait, there is stigma?!?!?

I have been using these my whole adult life, and I talk to people all the time; it has never come up!

you could consider flip ups
