WWE Raw On Monday Had Blatant Racism By An Announcer

So if it was 2 african american wrestlers it would have been ok for him to say that Ascension found them shucking and jiving across a cotton field? He has a history of being racist in real life as posted above.

I think it'd be awesome if a heel character went all out and didnt hold shit back. I'd love it. But hey, that's just me. I'm hispanic and know people that actually came from Cuba on rafts, and this doesn't bother me at all. It seems in line with his character. But if it did bother you, go ahead and voice your opinion, it's your right.

OP, have you only recently started watching wrestling? This is extremely tame compared to the type of stupid shit they usually say and do.

It was not the promo it was Big Show tearing down that Big Russian flag that got him to apologize.

Big Show didn't really get in trouble when he said gooks on air either. JBL isn't going to get any worse for saying something in character and tamer than his usual antics.

Loved the racist patriot angle. And sad it became the good guy patriot angle.

See, it can be whatever it needs to be. Zeb turning face against Russev was one of the better moments in the prior year where they played off the fans.

Don't see the big deal. If that little remark is bothering you so much, I feel sorry for you. Your'e acting like there aren't any Mexican immigrants. The remark was barely a jab.

I hear worst shit coming out of the mouths from Hispanics every other day.

Also, it's JBL. Talk about a walking stereotype.

You're way over reacting. But goodluck I guess.

You are complaining that shit smells. Racial stereotypes and offensiveness is a huge part of the WWE's schtick. The better question is why are you watching it especially if you find that sort of thing offensive?

I remember some dude was skateboarding/rollerblading I think (Mexican competitor) during early x-games or some shit definitely on espn, somehow the dudes sneaker popped out and his sock had a hole in it, all you heard was one of the announcers for the tv telecast saying "look! his sock is broken", in such a veiled racist kind of way lol.. I remember the dead silence after that on the mic by the other commentators lol...

I was shocked too

I watched the segment on youtube only after I heard complaints about it. So we shouldn't do something about racism? Just turn our head and ignore it eh? That sounds wonderful.

I gotta say after watching that clip, the tag team that was squashing the smaller guys is really great! They look like some real badasses. Who are they? I'm sure lots of people here would like to know, they look awesome!

Wrestling, racist? If this where they've gotten to since I stopped way back, they've been improving.

And even if these are his real feelings, seems he's the heel commentator. You can't fault Edward Norton for been racist because of American History X will be the reasoning.

Same JBL whose best friends were Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerreo. Same guy who had Farooq as his tag partner for 10 years or so. Lives in Bermuda.

Yes, what a racist!

"I have black friends"

JBL is known to be a bigot in real life.

WWE also currently has a tag team of three black men that are a cartoonish gospel group.

It's 2015 and it's not expectable on any level. I'm a fan of wrestling and it disgusts me.

Achieving goals is about picking battles, this is not a very good one to pick. But let's say your serious about all this, what do you think the best way to deal with offensive spectacle is? Ignore it or draw attention to it? They do it because it gets butts in seats.

You're sporting a Vader avatar. I wonder how many fat jokes were said on air on his expense.

I know I've heard a couple redneck jokes.

Asian jokes.

Mexican.

Russian.

Stop complaining. Or just stop watching WWE if you're easily offended.

Now look, it's not fair to exclude a group of three black men from being positive in an uplifting manner. That's the real racism - to say they CAN'T do that.

You have a Vader avatar, so assuming you have been watching wrestling for more than 5 minutes, you are literally embarrassing yourself with this crusade. You see, JBL has something called a "gimmick", in which he plays a millionaire neo-con bootstraps douche on air. People of that ilk tend to spout shit like he said. Hence, he said what he did.

I haven't watched wrestling in a long time, but aren't all the characters supposed to be caricatures?

I wouldn't go that far

The WWE is not particularly self aware and this stuff is not done in any kind of clever way.

The company has been pretty overtly racist since the beginning. So it's not new. The problem is that we're past the point where this kind of stuff is accepted.

He basically called dudes on camera wetbacks. There's some lines you don't cross even if you're 'in character.' My memory's a little hazy but I don't remember older characters like Million Dollar Man or IRS spouting racist shit at the audience to build heat.

They didn't have to when they'd make entire characters like that:

Not surprising. This is the same company that came out with such hits like "New Day", Guerreros coming out with lawn movers, and Golddust wearing blackface while wrestling Flash Funk....

also the Flash Funk gimmick.....

Yeah they do have a longstanding tradition of making men of color play the simp and that wasn't cool either. I'm mostly reacting to the 'hey he's got the rich dude persona the racism is just what he does' defense of the remark.

There was a racist comment by John Layfield saying that they found these guys on a raft in the gulf of Mexico insinuating they are illegal since they are Mexican. I would like to know if there is something that can be done about this or if there is a place where racism against Hispanics can be reported? I feel like he should be fired or atleast suspended for this comment.

Have you tried tumblr?

Also, this is about the most offensive thing I've seen from WWE:

Exactly and he insinuated they were illegal because they were Mexican. And this is a guy on commentary. Not even a wrestler doing it to build heat. in 2015, which is totally different than someone doing it in the 80s.

JBL does the Hitler salute in Germany , and he didn't get fired for that (well if you don't count CNBC).

During a WWE house show in Munich, Germany early in June 2004, in an attempt to draw heel heat, he gave the crowd several Nazi salutes while goose-stepping around the ring.[98] Such a display is illegal in Germany if used for political purposes.[99] In an interview with The Washington Post, Layfield explained "I'm a bad guy [on WWE TV]. I'm supposed to incite the crowd. I've done it for decades. I really didn't think anything of [the Nazi salute] - I know how bad it is, I've lived [in Germany]. I've been to Dachau, seen those places where they exterminated millions of Jews. I draw the line between me and my character. That's like saying Anthony Hopkins (who portrays Hannibal Lecter) really enjoys cannibalism."[100]

Just let JBL do his thing will ya!

You could tweet Del Rio.

I'm sure he would have fun with it.

Dude, he was in character. It's like getting mad at a movie character for being racist. The guy is being a heel, and said something you didn't like on the spot. It's all part of the act. Doesn't mean the actual guy is racist.

Just because he is 'in character' means his racist remarks should be excused?

I think a racist character should be allowed to say racist remarks in fiction.

That being said, I don't believe anything JBL says is scripted and the character he's playing isn't meant to be a racist idiot as far as I know. He should be disciplined. Fired? I don't know. Absolutely disciplined.

Racism in the WWE?

Well I never....
It's really easy to just shrug your shoulders at this stuff since it's not new.

I don't know. I think the hope is, as wrestling fans, by expressing our disgust by this kind of stuff, maybe things can begin to slowly change. That's a losing fight though if we're being realistic, since WWE is run by a bunch of carny mother fuckers.

It all becomes more bizarre when you compare it to their developmental show, NXT. Where this type of stuff doesn't exist.

Wrestling is stupid.

JBL will JBL. Dude will forever be known as the guy that got knocked out by Joey Styles.
I imagine JBL having Vietnam style flashbacks of that incident.

More from this announcer

JBL recently went off on another one of his racist rants at a SmackDown brand house show. He told the crowd they were a bunch of “fruit pickers”, then when they started calling him names he responded “I don’t speak Mexican.” He got lots of stuff thrown at him, but aside from that nothing major came from it at ringside, or backstage like it has in the past.

-- JBL had to redo his backstage promo on the March 3 edition of Smackdown with Orlando Jordan. In the original take, he told Jordan that if he lost, he would be kicked out and sent back to be 'with his people'. This drew some gasps backstage and after a brief debate, he had to redo the promo and replace that line with'with your kind'. WWE felt that it changed the connotation from racial to economic.

Not really surprised at WWE considering their habit of making everyone a stereotype since way back in the WWF days. Bigger bummer is seeing people so staunchly defending it even today. Shit's been gross homie.

You should call the police and let them know that the institution of professional wrestling is engaging in ethno-racial stereotyping for the purposes of financial gain.
