Where do you draw the line? What does a company have to do to lose your business?

Hm, if you're not buying a 3ds for such a petty reason it's safe to say that you were never really interested in the first place.
For me, I stop supporting a company if their games don't interest me anymore. Also I will never support any always-online-even-for-singleplayer games.

So the New 3DS XL is launching at the same price as the current 3DS XL, $199. If it launched at $209 with a charger, would you be chomping at the bit to buy one? Coming from a PC point of view, most of Antec's power supplies don't come with power cables any more. Do you completely avoid that brand?

I didn't know that about Antec, but now that you mention it... yes. My PSU and case are from Corsair.

Not fix their mistakes.

I swore off Microsoft when they announced the XB1. Was completely behind the PS4.

Then the DRM shit was reversed. Then Don Mattrick left. Others left. Phil Spencer was promoted. XBL gold requirements were dropped. Kinect was dropped. The price came down. E3 was entirely about games games games.

That was enough to get me to reverse my opinion of Microsoft.

I boycotted Blizzard when they announced the real money auction hall and always online for diablo 3. I never played diablo 1 or 2 online, at all, and thought the real money auction hall was disgusting. My boycott ended with diablo 3 for the consoles and the removal of the real money auction hall. I never did buy diablo 3 on my PC and I never will.

I have not written off Nintendo because they did something evil. I just wrote them off because I want an SNES 2 and they want to make another Wii. We're just on different wavelengths.

Not selling me what I want.

This is basically it for me. I stopped buying Sega games (that's a lie actually, I have Yakuza Ishin) but if I can't import to play the games I want... then we have a problem.

Even then... now, I only plan to import Yakuza 0. I will not import any other game or even any future Yakuza game if they don't localize them in English going forward. I only buy the games I know I will enjoy, not ones I just THINK I MIGHT enjoy.

Fuck you Nintendo. I was holding out on the 3DS and finally decided to buy one with the release of the N3DS. Now I'm not buying one? Why? Because fuck you that's why. I don't care if the adapter is $5 or $25. Suck a dick. Maybe I'll buy one used. What I'll play instead: Emulators on my phone.

I get what you're saying, but don't go that way.

As a recent 3ds user, OMG the games are superb, and you will be missing out big time. I have a Note 4 with all sorts of nice game apps and emus available, including Drastic. But the 3DS is a unique experience and shouldn't be missed especially now that the New 3DS offers 3D that finally works well. Phone games and emus don't match it.

Microsoft lost my business during the XBox One reveal. When they showed they'd wasted I don't know how many millions of dollars securing the NFL rights for their console. Something that would only be important to one country out of all the ones they supply to. That money could have been spent in so many different, better ways.

At that point I realised that Microsoft only truly care about their U.S. market and everyone else comes second. It didn't help that last gen Microsoft made the price of Gold virtually the same across all countries yet offered more services in the U.S.

When a company continously does dumb shit that annoys me as a consumer. Microsoft lost my business sometime around 2000 due to Windows problems (however i relented after 14 years and decided to pick up a bone for cheap), and Nintendo is soon to lose my business if they continue their penny-pinching, region-locking, faux-unified account bullshit.

Capcom. Marvel vs Capcom 3 LE. $80. 4 months later...Ultimate. Not downloadable....I will never forget. Only bought Asura's Wrath (used) and MonHun for WiiU. Maybe a couple downloadables. No SFxT for the on disc DLC. No Ultra SF4. Might do SF5...might....

I don't buy console exclusives because I find buying proprietary devices to do the same thing a generic PC can do as a waste. I can live without the software in my life.

Skipped XB1 because I had 3 360s RROD on me last gen. I'll skip the next DICE game, at least for a while, because bf4 was such a mess. So I guess companies releasing broken products makes me hesitant to purchase from them, at least initially.

Not to go too far OT but IDY almost always pulls some NTR or forced humiliation play (freezing) in his series and tends to abandon them for new series which he abandons for new series,... you get the point.

Aflame Inferno and Legend of Maian haven't been updated in 3 years, Onihime VS one of his better series he just ended,... all the while he started 2 new series in the past 2 years.

Ah yes, I read them all and enjoyed all but I didn't remember the bad part. Very true BTW

On topic(sorry there op), I hate with a passion region locking specially no other way around it geolocks . fuck that , I'm still salty I could never play the MP of my MGS4.

When you want to invite big brother into my house (not really about kinect, more about no used games/always online checks) in the form of a videogame console it makes me want to skip your generation, MS.

When you expect me to start my videogame collection from scratch instead of building an ecosystem, Sony. TBF Sony didn't have much of a choice since the PS3's cell architecture must be a bitch to emulate on a hardware/software level. If the PS5 doesn't have BC for PS4 games I'll probably be done with Sony purchases. It's not like I can sell my digital games. :/

When you don't have fucking system-wide party chat in the year 2015, Nintendo.

You'd think I'd be bored but my Steam library is larger than life. I'll wait it out. Now those guys know how to build an ecosystem that transcends your box.

When you turn a long time series into a MMO...and a Mobile game at the same time...I'm looking at you Capcom....>_>.

Had no idea about this. You've just blacklisted Antec (all their products) for life and made it my mission to recommend against the brand every opportunity. Companies that cut corners like that says to me they must cutting a lot of other quality related (component) corners as well.

To me it would be consistently doing mistakes and not learning from them. I was really close to dropping Nintendo and Microsoft all together. I dropped Konami and mostly dropped Capcom.
I love Hori and Logitech though, never change.

Gutting New copies to sell them as "used" at bloated scalper prices instead of MSRP.

Xenoblade never forget, fire Reggie, etc etc.

(Really hope that Nintendo is willing to take a moral high ground and put Xenoblade up for digital download on WiiU in the near-ish future. Failing that, at least not hand Xenoblade 3D to Gamestop as another exclusive for them to enjoy a monopoly on.)

I'm genuinely sorry that a ten dollar annoyance will keep you from experiencing an entire companies products, but to each their own.

I don't hold grudges so I look at it case by case. However bullshiting people and insulting their intelligence means I will not read a thing from that company without a great degree of skepticism (looking at you MS).

Companies that consistently make bad games lose my business- square enix, i'm looking at you. You broke my fucking heart.

The only company that I've outright shunned is Microsoft ever since Ballmer's "Linux is unAmerican" rant.

Otherwise, I'll buy a product from a company I hate if it looks good. For example, I really don't like the way Ubisoft has been lately or EA has ever been but if they publish a game I really want (such as a new Rayman) I won't boycott it just because their CEO is a dick.

Stop making games I want and/or start trying to squeeze money out of me through little purchases here and there. Yearly franchises will probably do it as well. Microtransactions? Cya.

Obviously when a company offends my flimsy morals/principles or denies me what is mine then I will hate them with the wrath of 25 burning suns until the end of time.

Almost never. If a company habitually makes games that I don't find fun, then I suppose I would never support that company (at least until they make a product I find to be worthwhile). It's easy to get caught up in the hate. At the end of the day, they're video games -- entertainment. If a game doesn't entertain you, then move onto one that will. If you want to get caught up in a company's practices and hold it against them for the rest of your life, then you're certainly free to do so... But I wouldn't recommend it.

Ubisoft is really the only one that I make a point to not buy any of their games. Their constant broken games and bad PC ports just make it hard to buy their games if I'll be playing them on PC anyways

The fact that I still don't own an XBox One probably tells it all. After that jackassery up until the launch of the XBone I don't really want to get involved in that at all.

I'm a relatively easy to please consumer.

I buy what I like, regardless of poor business practices or good.

I haven't held a grudge long enough for me to say I'm never going to buy a company's products again, but that also means my loyalty comes and goes like the wind.

Don't pirate games though.

Life's too short to draw lines in a hobby, it's only gaming. Buy and play whatever you like the look of.

Personally I can never get behind boycotts when it's something I'm interested in.

Some already have.

Calling me a liar:
Activision - support staff called me liar when I told them the hardened copy of COD I purchased did not come with the advertised DLC pass code. They just responded with, "all copies come with the code," right after I told them otherwise. That was 5 or so years ago. I went from a frequent loyal DLC customer, who bought every map pack for every release, to not buying a single one until this past release and that was only due to a special circumstance of having to use up some gift cards. Their shitty customer service representative calling me liar cost them 5 or so years of DLC sales and more (since I'm still never going to buy any with my own money). I can understand telling me they sympathize but there's nothing they can do. I can understand telling me my issue is with the retailer. I won't forgive calling me a liar.

Offering preferential treatment to other markets:
Sony - they had the PSP ambassador or PSP pass program or something for Japanese Vita buyers that let them get free copies of their PSP games for their Vita. That program was not brought to the States. I refuse to be treated like a second-class customer so I refused to buy a Vita. I demand businesses fight for my business as hard as they fight for anyone else's business. If not, I take my business elsewhere. Here I did just that. I bought a smartphone instead and have been enjoying iOS gaming ever since.

Too many games too name - when a game comes out in the US after having already been out elsewhere for too long. They were not in a rush to get my business. I'm not in a rush to give it.

Accepting my closed beta application but not inviting me into the closed beta:
Battlefield Heroes - I was a hardcore battlefield player. Sunk thousands of hours into the franchise. Was greatly interested in the game. Applied for the beta and never got in. When it finally came out I ignored it like they did my beta application. Maybe it was good. Maybe it wasn't. Maybe the game is still going. Maybe it's been closed down. Don't know and don't care.

Closed betas are a double-edged sword. They do help the development process. And I'm totally fine with never getting in if I learn about a game after sign ups are already closed or at the very end if it. But if I sign up early for the closed beta and never get in (or get in at the very tail end right before it goes open after months or years of being invite-only) then the game is dead to me.

They would have to constantly release bad products, or simply ones that i dont care about, mixed with a lot of bad PR or insults, it happens.

I still like what Nintendo showed, they just made stupid decisions regarding the new 3DS, really sucks for those that were hoping to buy one on NA.

Nintendo lost me today with the adapter business and their reluctance to release the standard New 3DS. It may seem like such a small thing to some people but to me, it shows that they've just stopped caring about the consumer.

Amen. Gone is the Nintendo I grew up with. Now they are a shell just like Apple.
I wanted to think the Wii/DS was just a phase, but nope.

It would take a lot for a company to lose my business. I have issues with companies like Ubisoft and EA but I'm still giving them my money.

I wanted to think the Wii/DS was just a phase, but nope.

Given the money they made on the Wii and DS I don't see why you think that was just a phase for them. Now that the Wii U has failed they have more of a reason to potentially change things up though.

It takes a lot to piss me off as a consumer. I'll still always buy games if they are good.

You can still erode my trust as a consumer even if you dont make bad games. Microsoft, for example, has repeatedly tried to fuck me over in various fashions over the years, so I flat out don't trust them not to try anymore. Whether it's crazy xbone drm, terrible indie policies, or trying to get pc gamers to pay to play online, it's constantly like they're trying to get away with something that'll affect the industry negatively.

When they stop making games I actually want to play.

As an example: I like the premise and gameplay in most AC games. However, if it;s a hot mess, I won't buy it. I bought Black Flag on the Wii U. Enjoyed it immensely. Skipped Unity on the Xbox One, because it was broken. Keep waiting for all the issues to be fixed, but it hasn't happened yet, and by the time it does, the next game will be here and hopefully not be broken.

I mean, this is like asking "when will you stop shopping at walmart" because they do shady things to make their products cheap. Answer: When they stop offering products for cheap that I actually want.

So, that's the thing - they could release 700 broken games or cut up into silly FTP/Microtransaction BS - but if they release a game I actually want to play and the reviews/reaction shows it to be in working order - I'll dive right in. I judt each game on it's own. All a history of "broken games" does to me is get me to stop buying those games at launch. I'll still by Zelda games at launch. Why? Their isn't a history of Nintendo releasing a broken product.

Of course this image was bound to crop up, but as for life being too short, its true, but there is no shortage of good stuff to be found elsewhere without having to deal with hassles associated with one given product.

e.g. if someone gives up street fighter, its not like there aren't plenty other great fighting games elsewhere.

The way this question is framed highlights the disconnect I have with many posters that go on about what they consider to be important customer rights issues.

A company doesn't "lose my business". That would suggest that they have it by default, which isn't the reality. A company earns my business by releasing a game that seems like a reasonable proposal to me. And they do this on a game-by-game basis: when a publisher offers a game, the game needs to look enjoyable to me. This is step zero. This is before considering anything about how its distributed (DRM, DLC, storefront or hardware exclusivity, etc etc). Only when I see an interesting game do I consider how the game is distributed, and how much I think any downsides about its distribution will weigh against how much pleasure I think I'll get out of playing the game.

I've had hardware problems with both the Xbox and Xbox 360. Combine those system failures with the hemoraging of exclusive games on that platform and the uninteresting 1st party line up well.... I don't plan on buying the system this generation. Maybe at a yard sale in a decade or two.

To me it's no different than the massive disappointment I felt when my new Xbone didn't have an audio jack and rechargeable batteries built into the controller. If I'd have known I was going to get nickel and dimed on two things that I consider mandatory (and is a standard for both Wii U and PS4), I probably wouldn't have bought one during the sales.

I felt like they purposefully excluded those things just to get an extra $50 out of me.

What Ubisoft have done recently with Far Cry 4 has made me vow literally to never pay full price for one of their PC games ever again (I can't even play the game since launch). However I will still bite during Steam sales etc.

I never cut out any company completely. Doesn't make sense.
However there are things that make me drop enthusiastic support of a company. In such cases I might not buy their games, even if they're somewhat interesting and if they make games I want badly I will never buy it full price and instead get it used/in bundle/on 90% off sale.

The main thing that makes me not buy games at high prices is when developer makes the same exact game for both mobile and PC and PC version somehow magically costs 2-4 times more, despite offering no additional content or significant improvements. I feel like those devs are just exploiting pc gamers and I refuse to buy their games unless I can do it for like a an euro or so.

I draw the line at clients launching clients. It's not really about the additional DRM; nor is it about installing the client itself (I like variety, and am happy to have Steam, GOG Galaxy and maybe Desura installed). But if I buy & launch a game through Steam, and it has to launch a middleman client to run, it can GGF.

So no EA or Ubi for me.
