Amiibo Discussion Thread 2: I Got 99 Pre-orders But A Rosalina Ain't One

Not open for further replies.
Just pre-ordered Shulk, Lucario and Meta Knight on Amazon.de. Now I just have to hunt for Rosalina on launch day in the US =/

Just did that (well Ike instead of Lucario +DDD) myself, I don't want to risk not having a chance to get Shulk and Ike and ordering than four didnt seem worth because of the shipping fees to Chile. Anyways it says on the email that the shipping date would be Feb24, is that normal? I thought it was at the end of January :O

I woke up yesterday morning to find a text from a friend telling me that a Walmart has pit and falcon in stock. I don't believe her so I go to check the website and what do you know it says in stock. I jump into my car and drive to this Walmart only to find a half build store fenced off with construction trucks in the parking lot. I I called the store number and got a guy who told me the store won't open till the 29th. I was so close...SO CLOSE!

Hello AmiiboGAF! I've posted in the previous thread a couple of times, but I've really been impressed by the courtesy and the friendliness of this community from all the thread lurking! So I'd like to become an Amiibro and discuss these vexing figures and all that. And maybe help out a few other Amiibros along the way.

Welcome (back)! Great community here.

I'm on the hunt for Pit and Falcon today. Gotta stay positive. Maybe I'll get lucky!

To make sure I get my money's worth, I'm willing to add a couple that other people need on top of my order. Any requests?

Edit: They don't appear to have the Pit I need through amazon as a seller. If anyone has an extra Pit, I'll order what you need for a trade

Well I don't need any but if you order the exclusives, assuming you aren't for yourself because there is a limit of one, there will no doubt be somebody that will need it. Shulk and Metaknight in particular.

Anyone holding out on some amiibos due to possible future versions? Now that they introduced the Super Mario amiibos, it seems like they could spring new ones on us at any time. I haven't bought Link yet because surely Zelda will get a line of amiibos later this year.

Yeah the bigger IP for sure will get more versions (Mario, Pokemon and Zelda), the rest at best will get some packs or repackaging :/. I'm just happy the Mario line has that hideous red base, else I would be hunting them down as well.

Could I get an amiibo'd avatar? Maybe make it smaller so it can go around the fat part of the head? Or actually idk what would look good, maybe around the bottom.

So I'm trying an order with amazon.de (living in the US and all) and I'm having a little issue with the address not being accepted. Is this a case like with amazon japan in which I have to set up a Tenso-like service?

Morning everyone! As terrible as it is, I'm kinda happy to see wave 4 preorders haven't gone up yet. lol My brother suddenly came into town for the weekend- he's only here for a couple of days, so I've been spending time with him and haven't been able to stalk this thread too closely. At the same time, it sucks that we still haven't heard anything. Come on, NoA...

Not at all. is it possible you are ordering an amiibo not sold directly from amazon but from a 3rd party?

Hmmm, was it confirmed Samus would become harder to find along with Fox? I was at GS asking about the New 3DS XL trade-in offer (they'd let me buy it, transfer the content, then trade my OG and get a cash refund thankfully) and saw about 4 of her.

Added myself to your list even though I already have her listed as a "want" on the GAF Amiibo spreadsheet.

Well, I caved in and pre-ordered Dedede, Metaknight and Shulk from amazon.de. That only leaves Sonic and Mega Man and my Wave 3 collection will be complete.

Wonder now with Targets closing down in Canada how much harder it'll be to find a Rosalina. I have a couple on the way but if I snag any at my local Target, I'm cool with selling them at cost and meeting up with any GAFers in Toronto.

Lol that is my exact feeling as well! On the one hand im kind of glad pre orders haven't gone live since I'm in and out of the thread. But I'm also annoyed Nintendo has given us no info.

For those in NYC, the Nintendo World Store has a large amount of Fox amiibos in stock. I picked one up yesterday.

I wish Nintendo stores were more of a thing... LEGO stores are speading themselves around the country, why can't we get some Nintendo stores too?

The question in my mind is why NoE gets what seems to be a greater degree of autonomy/is able to give better deals etc. to its customers than NoA if NCL were such a dead hand on the tiller of their subsidiaries.

The removal of the Japanese exec who was managing NoA (name escapes me) and Iwata's takeover suggests NCL recognised something was amiss, but is the US branch really that dysfunctional that it's still a problem even after that?

Hmm, well, the thing is, I don´t think NoA expected the demand and there is also the problem of distribution. I think that really is just it. North America is a really big place. Canada, United States and Mexico had to be supplied and NoA had no experience distributing toys at this scale. Nintendo needed a presence in retail to compete with Disney Infinity and Skylanders, and as so, depend completely on the retailers in how many figures they are willing to distribute. This sounds silly until you realize that the Wii U has been a disaster, just compare the Wii U display with the Xbox Display or the Playstation display, Wii U is half as big, if not smaller. My local Best Buy, for example, has half a rack dedicated to Wii U and the other half to the 3DS and its severely understocked. You can even get a Super Smash Bros copy without having to ask for it, Then you advance a little bit more and you see 4 full racks of PS4 games. What does this say? That retailers had no fate on the amiibos to be a big success and the space they were willing to dedicate to amiibos would be small, relatively speaking.

So when retailers made the amiibo orders, they made them conservative. Lots of Mario. Lots of Link. NoA saw this trend and so the production was made to satisfy what the market was willing to offer. Also, remember the pre-orders? The only retailer that sold out on the trinity before release was Amazon, and that is understandable since they are the most popular online store and provides free shipping. Besides this, is obvious Nintendo also tried to predict the demand itself and so made productions based on what figures the retailers may want restocks on, and that is why nowadays we all only see Mario and Peach. Other than that, interest was very low on the toys or savvy people decided to wait for a sale... until three things happened:

-The Gamecube adapter was stupid rare and selling for five times its price.
-The Samus with two cannons sold for 25000 on ebay.
-GameStop officially announced Marth, Villager and Wii Fit Trainer was discontinued in North America

This generated a chain reaction when everyone started looking at amiibos as true collectibles that hold or even surpassed their value, and a one-time opportunity that may never come back and they may want later. America has a consumerist mindset, so when Nintendo failed to provide an abundance of the holy trinity, and people caught up to it, everyone rushed to try to get their Amiibo fix on. Preorders for wave 2 started to sold out, people created communities and those communities grew arouund the hobby. Nintendo was made aware of this newly made demand. And yes, this demand, for them and even for some of us were here since the beginning, came almost out of nowhere. I saw Target had 3 of each of the Holy Trinity in stock until 5pm the day of launch, and I´m sure a lot of you did too. The figures proved to be fun and worth the hassle, and people who showed no interest before, now that they couldn't´t have it, wanted it.

And yes, NoA knows this. And now that we have called, waited outside, and asked again and again and again, retailers are aware too. I´m expecting the 4th wave to have a bigger supply, since I´m pretty sure its been produced with the new demand on mind. But Nintendo is weird, the current interest is a double edged sword. If they make lots of the rare amiibos and made them available, everyone could get one but it will lose value in the mind of the consumer, since they are so common, interest my decrease and a lot of them will end up in the clearance bin. On the other hand, if they keep the current under supply, people will keep their mad dash for the figures and they guarantee selling to close to 100% of their shipment, who in business terms, is fucking sweet, Nintendo best option may be to wait until all 50 figures are released and sold thoroughly, once they don so, then they can release reprints without the fear of screwed themselves by drowning the market with figures that may not sell.

So NoA had no choice but to be stingy as fuck and screw the people who were not at the right pace at the right time, but its a shared blame with the retailers, and us, the consumers. We may be the fateful who buys all their games and consoles, but we are few nowadays. The only way to change this is with our wallets, and won´t you know? I think its working! Amiibo is making the world aware of Nintendo again and we are going to see the fruits of that labor sooner of later.

TL.DR version:
-Nintendo made a limited amount of Amiibo because the Wii U failed and the retailers had no interest in them.
-The new demand is based on the figures rarity, if said rarity disappeared could be dangerous for the future businness if Nintendo wants to sell full stock of 50 different figures.
-Nintendo is going to make a Restock, when this happens is anyone's guess, but at least we are guaranteed one when a game that features a figure is released or when all 50 characters are released.

I wish Nintendo stores were more of a thing... LEGO stores are speading themselves around the country, why can't we get some Nintendo stores too?
Seriously, especially when Nintendo does stuff like the limited editions of Mario Kart 8 & Hyrule Warriors that you could ONLY get there, not even online.

I just sure hope they don't get the idea of having exclusive amiibo as well.

According to the Canadian Gaming Deals thread she won't be shipping to Target up here at all but I'd be very interested if you do find one of her.

I also have an extra MM 3DS XL coming to me that I'll sell at cost to a Toronto GAFer.

I just wanted to double-check: are the amiibo figures (not the packaging but the actual figure) the same for every country? I want to order some of the Wave 3 amiibos from amazon.de but I won't if the figures are going to be different from the ones sold here in the US.

They are completely identical, no differences whatsoever.

OP:
Q:Are Amiibo Region Free?
A:Yes, aside from different packaging all amiibo figures thus far will work in any region.

There are a lot of other questions and answers in there that might help you.

Other than the packaging, the amiibo itself should be exactly the same.

Exactly the same, only difference is that the german version has this smell of delicious oversized meat, for some reason. Also my german Marth is a beast.

The figures are 100% the same regardless of the region. Japanese box's have Japanese names/texts on the box. The EU versions have the name of the character in the upper right hand, and their # in the roster. NA version just has 6+ in the right hand corner.

EU version also has some set of instructions inside the box, that the NA versions don't.

Other then that, each figure is 100% the same. They all look the same, work the same. There is no difference with the Amiibos themselves. Just slight differences in packaging. And even those difference on the package are pretty minimal IMO.

No problem, welcome to our community! Happy hunting.

If you want s community avatar let me know. You can also PM me your Gmail if you want to be added to our private Google doc. It's a list of community members and the Amiibos they need and the Amiibos they have extras of that they are willing to trade or sell with another community member.

So I ordered a Marth Thursday morning from game.UK. It was roughly $20 with shipping, which I thought was quite a good deal, even if he's being reprinted. I received a shipping confirmation less than 12 hours later. Hoping he shows up in okay condition but that's commendable service!

So I just got an email from Walmart.com saying sheik was pushed to the 6th and me a man was pushed to the 20th. My ike and toon link haven't had a date change, though.

Lol wtf. I hope this isn't for all retails. Would be so annoying to go on Feb 1st and find out random amiibos were pushed to rabdom days in the month.
