Aliens
Terminator 2
Die Hard
Lethal Weapon 2
Etc...

Great writing, characters, world building, direction, pacing, humour, editing, and a level of general care and attention to detail in their craftsmanship that elevates them above the standard offering.

What was the last big budget Hollywood action film that came close to these classics, in your opinion?

I'm a Casino Royale fan, but do you mean Hollywood as in major studios or as in literally a production based out of the Hollywood area?

Edge of Tomorrow was pretty good.

Also Dredd

Edge of Tomorrow was good indeed. So was Mission Impossible 4.

Dredd was kinda small scale production if I recall though.

Good:
John Carter (Worts and all)
The Lone Ranger (Despite the bad framing device of the story)
Guardians of the Galaxy (Under developed supporting characters and all)

Great:
MI: 4
Jack Reacher
Edge of Tomorrow
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Edge of Tomorrow (Live. Die. Repeat.) was fantastic. It'd be interesting to see how it would have performed at the box office if the advertising had played up the movie's comedy instead of selling it as a sci-fi action film.

There are so many though: edge of tomorrow, ghost protocol, guardians, dawn of the planet of the apes, dark knight.

I'm probably confused by the OP though. This felt too easy.

DIE HARD 3.

I agree with this to a big extent.

A brutal big budget romp, dry humour with A-Listers hamming it up, memorable relatable sub-characters with Terrorists duking it out violently in New York with bombs amongst other things

You will not see this kind of movie ever again. Dat initial explosion and the Subway Bomb would never make it.

Off the top of my head I can't think of a single funny scene in that movie.

People hate on tom cruise but his movies almost always delivers. One of the best actions stars IMO.

In America he gets trashed, but he definitely is still huge worldwide. I used to loathe him and never was able to see past his reputation during movies, but now I think he's perhaps my favorite.

That guy has one of the best catalogs of films under his belt. Plenty of fun and drama to be had.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Gravity and Interstellar were all big amazing movies that came out recently. I suspect the OP has convinced himself that the Golden Age is behind us and that we are in the decline phase of cinema with the final collapse imminent.

If I'm understanding the question in the OP correctly, I think Guardians of the Galaxy is the last (most recent) big budget action movie that will be remembered as a classic in 20-30 years.

mission impossible 4
casino royale
dredd
riddick
the fast n furious movies
john wick
olympus has fallen (I enjoyed this, sue me)
transformers

CTRL+F: Matrix

...seriously you guys, why has nobody mentioned The Matrix yet?

Because most people here don't consider it the last great big budget action film, they consider more recent releases to be worthy of consideration.

The Matrix might be my choice though, I'm struggling to think of anything since then.

I do really like Edge of Tomorrow, Guardians, etc... but they didn't have anywhere near the same impact for me. And it isn't a nostalgia or age thing, films in other genres are constantly surprising me by sneaking into my top 10 all time lists.

Not seen interstellar yet....

Really? You don't count Casino Royale as more recent and great?

And Interstellar is atmospheric sci-fi drama with little actual action.

I thought of Casino Royale as well, but to me, it's more of a spy thriller than a blockbuster action movie (unlike many other Bond movies actually). Either way, it certainly isn't a hollywood film anyway, is it?

Oh so you meant the last big budget movie that already is a classic. Not the last one that will become a classic, yes?
