GTA:SA PC packaging = Kicks much @$$

I just picked up the PC version of SanAndreas from Gamestop. They were all out of the CD-ROM version(the ones that were left were reserved copies), but they had a few of the DVD versions that weren't reserved. I haven't fired it up yet, but this is probably the best packaging I've ever seen for a PC.
It's kinda hard to explain. The game disc itself doesn't have a case. Instead the game manual(which is a thick full color hardcover book) acts as the case where the game disc sits in the back. It also comes with a HUGE map that's folded in the front of the book. To finish it off, the whole package is encased in a cardboard sleeve (like the ones you find around your DVDs every once in while). It looks exactly like a DVD case(even the same dimensions) when you first see it. :D

Are the other versions of the game like this? I don't know what the PS2 and Xbox versions are like.

Can you give us an idea of performance on your spec (and of course, what you spec is)?

I've a 2.5Ghz, 512MB RAM, 9700Pro, and I'm torn between the Xbox and PC versions.

edit - I fairly comfortably meet the PC recommended specs, so barring any reality checks re. performance from people with the PC version, I guess it's for me.

Today we can reveal the first details on the limited edition version of GTA: San Andreas for PC. The game will ship with a "novella" which was described to me by a retailer as being a "prequel".

The retailer I spoke to described it solely as "a book" and stated the information received was straight from Take 2.

The listing of the "novella" has appeared on the websites of Gameplay, Amazon and Play.com.

Update: Rockstar have now confirmed to me that the PC version will ship with the novella worldwide and that it is a "very nice looking book".

Check back soon for further details. Check out the dictionary definition of novella while you wait!

Anybody know anything about this? I went to both EB and Gamestop and neither of them knew there was supposed to be a LE version of San Andreas for PC, nor did they have it on the computer.

I just want to know if the frame rate is smoother on the PC version. It certainly seemed that way with Vice City. I ordered the game for Xbox today, but I get the feeling I'll end up with the PC version too sometime down the road.

just get both versions next week at compusa. they're $29.99. $60 for both versins, $10 more than the normal price of one copy!

I'm an impatient bastard so I already ordered the Xbox version from EBgames.com, but that's a good idea...might pick up the PC version from Comp USA next week. I'd rather just wait until it's $19.99 however. :)

As for my PC specs:

P4 2.4GHz CPU
1.5GB of DDR333 memory
eVGA GeForce6800 GT 256MB

I'm running the game at 1280 x 1024 32bit resolution with 2x antialiasing and the draw distance turned all the way up. The game hasn't stuttered or had a framerate hiccup yet. Every thing looks pretty damn good in comparison to vice city. Practically everything casts a shadow and when you drive really fast there's motion blur.

As for a price difference, it was $49. =/ I didn't care though. I've been playing nothing but Everquest II and FPSes for a while and was dying for a change of pace. :)

Wow, that's definitely something new. Did they add that to the xbox version?

Are you running it with the frame limiter on or off? If not, does it still have that problem of not being able to load the textures and stuff quick enough when going to a new region (Like Portland to Staunton Island in GTA3, etc.)? I always hated having to drive around with ultra-low res textures on the buildings and a purplish blue road for about 2 minutes while the textures caught up with the framerate.

My first post at GA, btw. Glad to be here. :)

I'd like to know, myself. I can live with playing the game at 30fps, but that delayed draw-in when you set it to 60 made 3 and Vice unplayable.

Holy shite, Xbox version looks much nicer. Sounds better too, but maybe that's my audio out. I did see some pop in during cut scenes though. The biggest difference is the lack of jaggies and better framerate. This was my GOTY last winter, but it used to give me headaches to play it for too long because of the graphics quality. NOT ANYMORE!

Replay is cool, but I don't notice any sound during it :( The cinematic camera is awesome with the better graphics though :) Less loading too. Still, this does support the memory card and I will be loading it on the drive of my other Dude to lessen those even more.

Preach it, brother! Or those sourpuss sissies who think GTA is mass market garbage on par with Hollywood blockbusters or smash hit reality shows. They may be wildly popular but all the GTA's and especially SA are incredibly deep, clever, inventive, funny and so on. I was gonna wait for the $30 CompUSA deal next week, but you're getting me psyched here. Yeah! Go team! Go GTA San Andreas!
