Moving To and Living In Los Angeles

how much time you have? head up Griffith Observatory in the morning to get a great view of the city and the Hollywood sign. then off to Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills for a rather nice and hidden park that give you a good idea of how the rich and famous lived back then. after that, go to Getty Center and check out all the cool artwork there, then head over to Santa Monica near by and get some sun tan while rest of the country is getting bury in snow. all that can be done within a day and for close to free. go to Korea Town or Little Tokyo for some dinner (if you're heading there from Santa Monica thou, expect traffic starting 4pm to 8pm).

A couple of days there and a couple in San Diego. Thanks for the tips!

Will be going to San Diego and LA next week. What cool stuff should I do in LA? Where's the good food?
Lots of good spots to eat in LA:

Shin Sen Gumi, Badmaash, Umami Burger, Wurstkuche, Plan check, Guisados, Eggslut, Daikokuya, The Pie Hole, Philippe The Original.

Love the LA threads. Coming up on my 15th year here (Boston native). Live in Hollywood, work in downtown (but I have lived and worked all over in my time)..

Think about leaving occasionally but what can I say, I'm spoiled. Awesome weather, tons of great bars and clubs and as someone n here said "there's stuff to do any hour of the day" (well just about). Also as an East Coaster who was born to have a distaste for the Angelenos, I must say overall people out here are really cool and friendly, just gotta get used to it (like any city).

I gotta make my way to one of those gaf meet ups some day--

Ever been completely ignored and not seated at a restaurant? Go to LA. I've found Chinese restaurants to be the biggest offenders.

SF is a much more accepting place in general I've found.

My friend just came back from San Francisco and he said a lot of parts of it are extremely racist. 3 bars with barely a crowd didn't serve them or ignored them because they were hispanic (one of them looks black, though). He said the common denominator in all of the bars was that everyone there looked like a white hipster and super pretentious.

I've never seen that kind of behavior in Los Angeles, where the cultural diversity is very varied.

Everyone I've met from or worked with from SF come off so full of shit and full of themselves, imo. It's purely anecdotal on my part, as it's probably around 100 people total.

Thanks for the list

Hoping to make it to Cali for the summer. First stop is definitely gonna be in & out.

Prepare for disappointment.

Other places you might want to try out as well: Fatburger, Original Tommy's Hamburgers, Tam's Burgers and Jim's Burgers.

In N Out is extremely overrated. I heard about that place coming to Texas for a year before they opened and they finally did and my thought was, that's it? Don't believe the hype.

You need a car to get anywhere and the restaurants are racist. Come to The City instead.

SF > LA

Talks about racist restaurants, yet brings up that SF is better. HA! Good one.

OP you working for Direct TV? I hear its ok to work there but so-so for contractors or hired consultants. You might even see me pop in once in awhile lol (I work for a consulting firm that does work for DTV). Be sure to network alot! :D

Awesome, and will do with the networking. Personally, I love the company and its culture (and the product!).

other food recs:

Savoy Kitchen - Alhambra
did their chicken/rice OMG dish months back before I became a vegetarian and wow

Scarpetta - Beverly Hills
italian food done right - dress code too

Jongewaard's Bake N' Broil - Long Beach
cheap and incredibly precise feel good food

Morrison's - Los Feliz
great beer list, a killer happy hour, and the best irish vibes (probably my favorite gastro in LA)

A fantastic place to eat. Really cozy. However the wait is horrendous. And they dont take reservations. I also reccomend the Breakfast Club, formally known as the Bixby Cafe.

Down the street in bixby knolls there is a really good Mediterranean place. I cant think of its name off the top my head though.

Had 'em all, and they're not bad, but they're only good pizza on the LA spectrum. There's not much you can't find in LA, but if there's seriously top notch pizza to be found, it has eluded me for over a decade.

Sure, but it works. I feel the same about mexican in NY, pure struggle-ville.

Nice, a "moving to L.A."-Thread. I'm (probably) going to move do L.A. in the beginning of february from germany for work even though most of the time it's office@home. It will be about half a year, but maybe I can stay longer if I like it (and if i can save enough money for my masters degree).
area will probably be canoga/woodland hills, since there is the clinic, but as I said I won't need to be be there often.

soo. I got my job and right now im filling out the visa-form so I can hopefully go to L.A. in the beginning of february. Since I'm going to stay 6 months I will need an apartment. Location should be near Woodland Hills. Can you recommend something where I should look?

May I ask what your job is? Why do you move there from Germany if you work at home?

Software developer. There will be a week long seminar which I will attend. Also because I can and it's a nice chance and I can work under palm trees. Furthermore I also want to travel and see the country.

I used to live in Woodland Hills. Pretty nice area and the westfield mall is right there. Pretty convenient.

Yes, the google images looked very nice. But isn't it a rather expencive area? I checked some appartements and they all started with 1400 and above.

You should be able to get a 1 bedroom apartment for about 1000 in that area but it maybe harder to find without a 1 year lease.

Although woodland hills is a nice area, it is almost as far out as you can get from any city center. The area is not very "walk-able" and you would definitely need a car if you are interested in exploring the rest of the city. In addition, working in woodland hills would mean that you can live almost anywhere else and not encounter much traffic commuting during normal business hours.

That would be ok, price wise. The problem is the 6 months, oh and also that it is very soon...

Ok, then what other districts should I look into?

Also how is the public transportation?

Public transportation is decent downtown (and its surrounding areas) and in Hollywood. Santa Monica has its own bus system. You'll need a car pretty much anywhere else.

It would depend on how often you would need to go into work and how long of a commute you want to deal with. Bus public transportation is readily available in most areas but since everything here is so spread out, it takes a long time to get across town.

Studio City/Sherman Oaks is probably to closest walkable area that would be about 45 mins bus ride to woodland hills. It is also within a 1 hour bus/train ride to areas such as Hollywood, Downtown, and Santa Monica.

If you rarely ever have to go into work, then you may want to consider Santa Monica or Culver City. It would be an almost 2 hour bus ride to Woodland hills but there are a lot more local things to do, places to eat, and the weather is better.

Housing would be more expensive in the above mentioned but you may be able to find a 1 bdrm for around 1300, studio for 1100, and bachelor for possibly less than 1000.

I only have to be there the first week, then maybe for meetings.
can you recommend any websites, the one I looked into where about 4-500$ above the price-range you mentioned.

Try padmapper.com . WestsideRentals.com if you're feeling like paying for apartment listings.

Warning: padmapper does aggregate more listings than just Craigslist, but in my experience, at a similar price range to yours, there are more scam listings off Craigslist than on it.
