Amiibo Discussion Thread 2: I Got 99 Pre-orders But A Rosalina Ain't One

It's actually a great system for most figures.

Say, on December 15th, they say "On January 1st, this figure will go up for preorder. We plan to have this figure out in April." Preorders will stay open until either 1) a high ceiling is reached or 2) a period of time has passed. Sometimes they tell you. Sometimes they don't. However, what occurs is that they start producing the actual figure right before preorders open. Then, when they open, they can gauge demand. If they're coming in hot-and-heavy, they can temporarily close preorders while catching up. Usually what happens is that preorders remain open until a month or two before release.

This gives them time to make stock + make more for retail. It's a great system. Preorder, or risk losing out. Some gamble, but you always have the chance to get the figure at MSRP (or even cheaper through preorder discounts) no matter what.

One company even says "Preorders will open January 1st through January 15th, get it then if you want it, because we want this to be exclusive and rare." If you preorder in that window you are guaranteed the figure.

It's a little different for Amiibos, sure. They have actual retail stock which probably takes up a good chunk of their actual stock. But why they don't follow their countrymen and women with their methodology that has proven to have worked for years and years is confusing.

Ahh, very interesting, I mean it makes total sense. I wonder if it's the "firehose" approach that's causing the problem - it seems like releasing so many figures in such a short period of time would make it very hard to work the system in the manner which you're describing.

I wonder if checking out Wal-Marts in small, remote towns would be fruitful for Wave 1 rarities. Has anyone done this? When systems launch and I haven't pre-ordered, there's a Wal-Mart about 90 minutes from me in a town of about 6000 that has never failed to produce a launch system for me. I've gotten a 360 and a PS4 from there.

I wish they had listings for all amiibos so you could at least check a store tracker.

So they're removing Amiibo from amazon now? Why?

Indeed. I completely understand why they can't implement this system as their only method of selling Amiibos. But why not open preorders on your official site 3-4 months in advance? Require earnest money if you want, say, $5 per Amiibo, that is completely non-refundable (although obviously if say the Amiibo were cancelled you'd get your money back). Earnest money scares scalpers and limits Nintendo's risk in overproducing while infusing cash into their production line.

Most wouldn't bother because it's locking up money in advance, but for serious collectors, this would be a godsend and provide peace of mind, while also underminding scalpers and allowing children/retail only shoppers to pick them up.

Lessons learned, I suppose.

I'd guess that along with the issue of retail that - Nintendo being Nintendo - they're managing this themselves and reinventing the wheel, rather than learning or lifting from what has been shown to work for other companies.

EDIT:

BTW, has anyone seen any Wario preorders in the wild in the UK aside from GAME's shortlived preorder window?

Since we are all sharing... I, too, am usually not much of a collector. Well, at least not with figures like amiibos. The only collecting I did before this was certain Collector's or Limited Editions or video games/consoles. I never did it for "collection's sake". I just did it because I either liked the included bonuses and/or I was a big fan of the producer or developer. Sure, I have odds and ends from my past subscription of services like loot crate. But I never specifically ordered any figures. Nintendo changed all that. I don't think this will change my collecting habits outside of amiibos, but in the meantime I am enjoying myself and plan to keep collecting. I'm not trying to collect every single one. At least, not at this time. However, I have noticed that I desire more than I first anticipated.

We'll see where it goes. ^_^

Here is the issue I think, with casual collectors getting into "collecting" figurine series like Amiibos. I think, the problem is, you are going up against two people. I. The avid collector that wants every single Amiibo in mint condition. They either are collecting this to make money later on, or collecting it because they well like to collect things (the rarer, the more joy they get out of having it). II. Scalpers. People that don't give a fuck about the item, but only want to make a quick buck on it.

If you are casual like me, you just want to either I. play with the damn Amiibo (like..gasp they were intended for)...or II.Collect them to display, because you like looking at them.

The problem with being casual about this, is that you don't care about the rarity of an item. YOU WISH that the majority of these were not rare. So you could just go pick them up at any store, at any time. You just want them because you enjoy them on a very basic level.

But in order to get something you aren't that invested in, you have to fight against two other factions that take this shit seriously. Talking about pre-orders, notifications, camping out, being glued to your computer/phones. So it becomes way too much stress and hassle to get something, you just want to enjoy on a very basic level.

Doesn't help that, we have erratic release dates, lack of information, pre-orders and sales going up at random ass times.

I hope someone does a documentary on all of this. Hmmm, idea for a new kickstarter project...

I'll tell the story. NOW GIVE ME YOUR MONEY!

And it looks like the questions asked are still there which means they aren't deleting the pages out right, just taking them down.

Yeah, and you can still sell them as a third party seller, so for now that theory is unlikely. Wonder what they're up to?

You better make a symphony for this too.

I actually play music professionally, and do work in film (studio music for scores). I have access to a recording studio owned by a major film studio (can't say who).

If you want a symphony theme song for this, I can make that happen.

Azula can do it all!!!!!

First, amiibo-gaf shirt ideas. Then a documentary. And now a symphony. What's next? Amiibo figures based off of neogaf users who collect amiibos? OMG NOW I WANT THIS.

That's so cool. I'm always envious of those who have professions where they get to do what they love (hopefully that's the case, lol), especially anything that has to do with music.

I got into collecting amiibo about a couple weeks after release. I, originally, had every single one preordered (amazon) but when the exclusives were announced I decided it wasn't worth the effort and cancelled the whole lot. The release came and went and still didn't budge. Then I caved; I bought Pikachu and Samus.

It's like a drug, I loved the detail and being a figure/statue collector myself, I was impressed with the detail, say for a couple bad paint jobs. I thought to myself, gee, I'm only buying a couple of these. I'm not even going for the full set. Let me, however, just buy one more; let me get Fox. I was in awe at the detail. What is this feeling. I needed to feel it again. I needed more amiibo.

I purchased Villager and Marth at scalper prices but, at the time, scalper prices were low so Villager was $16 and Marth was $23. Then I finished off the Holy Trinity with Wii Fit Trainer at MSRP (Amazon still had he listed).

From that moment I purchased the remaining Mario, Link, Kirby, Peach Yoshi, Donkey Kong and managed to get lucky with the hard to find Wave 2 figures online, only having to go out to Target for Capt. Falcon.

With all of Wave 3 ordered (in one fashion or another) I am ready this time. With Wave 4 and beyond, no more scalper prices, I'll be ready.

The Amiibogaf companion App. Press it, it'll search for Amiibos on all major retailer websites. It'll also hook into eBay, but will only search for Amiibos at less than Scalper price.

Yes, I love my work. I got lucky though. I've been playing music since I was like 7 years old. I worked in the music industry/film (first in the press/pr side, then in the production side). But then I was forced to stay at home for a year and a half while I battled cancer.

A colleague of mine from my University, ended up working for a big film studio doing studio music for their scores. And he hit me up after I went into remission and wanted to collaborate again (since we worked really well as students in Uni. We did all our projects at Uni together). So it was kind of luck/perfect timing. But I was able to jump straight back into a really nice job.

I guess after a year and a half of the worst luck/time of my life, I was given a break.

Now I want to see this actually happen :O

lol, is this going to happen?

Amazon added Kirby and Fox back. Only problem is...Fox is still being sold by third party sellers. WTF. So why did they bother removing all the Amiibos?

Sold by TOYS ARR! US

Seems legit.

EDIT: Bad example, in that case it's fulfilled by Amazon. BUT if you look, they have all the other third party sellers back that aren't fulfilled by Amazon. SO...yeah. WUT. No idea why Amazon took down every Amiibo.

1. Yes, probably import it from a Japanese site. They have plenty, and are shipping already. Your next best bet is to go in store Feb 1st (go early in the morning).

2. Feb 1st.

3. Awesome.

4. No NA retail is taking Wave 4 Pre-orders yet. Only EB Game Australia, GAMES UK, and a couple other regions (but they sold out instantly). We are all still waiting on Wave 4 pre-orders to go up. We have NO indication when they will go up (Newegg posted the pre-order pages like 4 days ago, but it just says COMING SOON).

5. Not really....

Can't think of anything. Basically, no idea when Wave 4 pre-orders are happening. Most stores in NA are going to sell Wave 3 Feb 1st. Wal Mart delayed some of their Amiibos to the 6th and 20th (so don't go through them).

Thanks for the info! Really appreciate it. Didn't realize Feb 1st was the day : )

It's my fault that pre-orders haven't gone up yet. For the last two days I've been working where I've had cell reception and am able to check for pre-orders throughout the day. Tomorrow I'll be working where I won't have reception so the orders should go up at that time. :(
