Amiibo Discussion Thread 2: I Got 99 Pre-orders But A Rosalina Ain't One

Just called Hayward, CA TRU again and they lied! They put them out in the morning wtf! They're all gone now. Dammit.

Wow that sucks :/ Does no one in these stores ask other people? Am I the only one when working in a department I'm not familiar with bother asking around?

At least you should try to hunt for one. It's possible that you can get one. It's not even out yet...

I would usually agree with you on this, usually being the key word, because after all the shit I went through to find Villager, WFT, Marth, Diddy and Falcon when they all launched...I can't even count the number of stores I went to and the number of lunch breaks I skipped eating to try finding some. All to be a massive waste of time because they were always, ALWAYS sold out. It was my first time trying to hunt for toys like that, physically, and holy crap it's probably the last one. It's a freaking chance GAF backed me up to get the most rare ones or else I would never ever have a full wave 1/2 on my shelf. (Special thanks to Sphinx and M1nion for filling these gaps.)

So yeah, I prefer relying on the internet/GAF after this. But hey, maybe I'm just too impatient/salty for this. Shulk was rare day 1 when he was available on EBgames.ca so I'm not holding my breath on it and I certainly will not take a day off to wait in front of a store that surely won't have one in the end. Resulting in another waste of time (and money if I'm skipping work.).

Sometimes I ask myself why I try so hard for this MM N3DS XL. As beautiful as my current 3DS is, I still designed and had new covers made for the top and bottom. My kingdom hearts designs below:

Very cool. I bet people would pay you to design some cover plates. I know I would.
Edit: Which makes the fact NA is getting none much more painful.

Picked up my Ike pre-order today. That's a pretty good quality amiibo in the flesh, he looks powerful. And he has a faded emblem on his cape, like Marth does, I wonder if that's the Greil Mercenaries emblem?

And then I leveled him to 50 in Smash and learned that, yeah, those amiibo high level buffs? They make Ike into a monster. Do NOT get hit by him. So that's fun.

It's funny but I'm starting to think the sheer glut of commons, which happen to center on Mario, Peach, Yoshi, DK, and Kirby may have tipped us off to Nintendo's perception of what games they think are appealing to the heavy exclusion of all other IPs/characters.

It's even more blatant as this is in the context of Smash Bros... not Mario Party or something. The Smash audience is probably a lot more varied in taste than people who buy games only because Mario is on the cover. But even for Smash-series Amiibo, there's still the assumption that only half a dozen characters will have heavy demand.

I just find it so funny the most in production is Peach and Yoshi.
I mean are there really that many fans of them?

Thanks for the info AmiiboGAF! I just went into TRU yesterday around 7pm and they had one Toon Link left. Now I am able to play with the Spinner in Hyrule Warriors and not have to wait until Feb 13 (Gamestop).

When I went to the Amiibo section, the TRU employee was like, Please take one of the Bowsers! I told him I was going to wait until the Super Mario series to get it. I wonder which one I should really get though. Both look really good.

Now I just need to cancel my Toon Link pre-order at Gamestop. Put that money towards the New 3DS system...

Honestly, I'm surprised with the amount of Peach that I see. Especially since Nintendo tries to focus a lot of these games on boys, either they thought boys would love her, or girls cause "she's a girl"? Just trying to wrap my head around this mentality.

Stats aren't a good predictor since I remember seeing Link, Mario, and Pikachu being best-sellers. I'm pretty sure if Marth etc had a good amount MADE, that their numbers would rise significantly too.

I'm kinda glad that I preordered from TRU has they all had three sequestered and ready to pick up today. Had 2 Bowsers and a Link left over (Secaucus, NJ).

I was just thinking about this, and it's really starting to upset me. Is Nintendo really that out of touch with their average fan? They're going to end up taking a loss on these overstocked common Amiibos, while also raising the ire of their diehard fans by not producing enough of the uncommons.

Shelf space costs money, and a bunch of useless Marios and Yoshis taking spots that could go to Amiibos that would actually sell is a bad business move. Whoever did their sales projectections done ****ed up.

Yoshi is probably one of the most popular characters in all of gaming.

you must be on the merchandising team because apparently they think that as well and yoshi stuff is shelf-warning everywhere :)
Bay Area TRU update: Fremont 0, Dublin 0, Emeryville has Bowser only left.

Hey that's my hood!

Was going to hit up Emeryville today but I have pre-orders that haven't been cancelled on toysrus.com and target.com sooo... I think i'm good, just waiting for them to ship.

I have terrible luck finding Amiibo I need at that TRU, although that is the location where I snapped the pic of a lone Marth on the shelf and posted here recently. :)

Thank you guys! I can't take all the credit though. I was inspired by other Kingdom Hearts art I've seen online. These are just mock ups (maybe I'll take real pics when I get home). Someone on Etsy took my designs and he etches the silver part into the metallic plates.

I'm going assume everyone that are seeing the new waves are outside of the US.

Nope! Bowser, Sheik, Toon Link, and Lucario were all showing up in Toys R Us stores yesterday (and possibly are still there today). The Lucario sales were shut down pretty promptly though because they were possibly (most definitely) including people's preorders.

Which one did you go to - S. Lindbergh, Sunset Hills or Florissant? I managed to snag all 3 with some help. I don't like Living in St. Louis much, but it sure is convenient for multiples of big name retailers within a condensed area.

Yeah I called them right after you posted that and they took an hour just to look for me. Seriously an hour. No joke

Man I thought we talked about that couple of days ago when he got upset and the next day he said the he was sorry and was back to normal. So did he leave again?

He's ok. He's just annoyed with Nintendo of Americas handling of Wave 3 (that being that TRU has them now and everyone else who knows even), so he's out for now.

With his Japan trip and pending engagement during said trip it's a good idea,

Yeah, I'm pretty much done.

Way too many of these things being released way too quickly. I'll grab a Wario and a Ness, if it's even possible considering all the UK preorders have instantly sold out, and then fuck the rest.

Went to the TRU by the galleria mall in Dallas and the girl said that they aren't selling wave 3 until February but they have received a shipment.

There was a Captain Falcon there, I've seen some people looking for him so i picked him up. If anyone needs a Captain Falcon PM me. price is my cost +shipping no markup.

Went and paid off my sheik and DDD at GameStop. DM said the reason TRU has them now is a different distibruter. Not sure how true that is but at least i now have

Sheik
DDD
Ike
Shulk
Mega Man
Meta Knight

paid off

Not trying to be obtuse - legit question.

How are people making determinations that Sheik is going to be rare, Bowser is common, etc, based on ONE retailer releasing first batch early? Hell some TRU have Link stock and people are saying "common" and some TRUs don't have link and people are saying "rare". We have no idea what stock is going to be like at other retailers, or what TRU will get in supplementary shipments.

Am I missing something or are people jumping the gun?

For St. Louis peolple is there an area that has a TRU..BB...Target and Wally World in close proximity of each other? I will be there the weekend of the first visiting friends and plan on taking an hour or so to go looking.

Except for rosalina lol
I blame that on retail exclusive more than anything. I doubt any retail exclusive will be not rare.

Could be jumping the gun. Zelda was rare at first, but by the end of the month you could get her. In the case of Little Mac, Pit, and Falcon though first impressions were right.

Probably jumping the gun a tiny bit but Bowser for sure is common, my TRU got like 30 of him and 2 Sheik so the gun jumping is logical at least.

I'm basing my logic on how popular the character themselves are. I mean, Bowser is getting another version in March, so it seems that if you can't find the SSB version of him, then there's the Super Mario line to give you another chance, be it a different pose. Out of all the Wave 3 characters, I'd say people will mostly be familiar with Bowser, Sonic, & probably Mega Man. Sheik? Probably not as much.

Wave 2 kind of supports my idea. Luigi & Zelda? Most common to find and are the most known to people. Captain Falcon & Pit? Not as popular and are much harder to find.

All but confirmed he is the flat out common of this wave.
Though we all knew that it seems.

Sheik is already turning out rare? Noooo

Toon Link looks the best of them anyway. But Sheik's the coolest character of the bunch.

Guy said they got about 3 shieks and 8 toon link or something. Looks like about 40 bowser.

I didn't really like toon link's pose and don't care about sheik. I like bowser so I'm glad he is common.

Still salty about pit and little Mac.

I really want de de de and mega man from wave 3, ike if I can swing it.

I regret not pre-ordering Sonic and Megaman. Not going to make that mistake with Pac-man though.
Also it is stupid commons, uncommon, and rare even exist. They should have shipped 10-20 each amiibo per store franchise location and then used sales data to determine which ones to produce more of and which ones to stop.

Each wave of 3 Amiibo seems to have a Common, Uncommon, and Rare. Each store seems to get no more than 4 of the rare. Wave 2A and 2B fit this model pretty well, and 3A seems to be following suit. Little Mac was rare. Pit was Rare. Sheik is definitely rarer than T Link and Bowser.

There are 3 Toys R Us locations in St. Louis. Best Buy, Target and Wal-Mart each have a location within close proximity. Not sure if you have been here before or not or how old you are but there are some very decent microbreweries worth a stop during your visit. ITAP and Schalfly come to mind.

Cool, just curious. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Went to 4 different stores this afternoon and swung by the electronics section to see if they had any rare figures for you guys. I had no luck but I will keep looking. I quit collecting in the middle of wave 2 seeing it was going to consume my life and didn't want to fork over extra money to scalpers. But ill keep a look out for you guys.

Dang. Seeing these pics from TRU is making wish I could go there now and check it out but I won't be able to go until tomorrow. Hopefully they have some left by then or just get them in.

7 preorders paid off at Gamestop. (Shulk, Sonic, Toon Link, Shiek, Ike, Bowser, and DDD).

Dude told me about how there's no street date and the new revised dates to expect the amiibos at.

Metaknight I got with Play-Asia.
Megaman I got with Amazon.com.
Lucario shipped from Amazon.fr.
