Analysts at UBS estimate that China accounted for 36 per cent of iPhone shipments in the most recent quarter, compared with 24 per cent for the US. During the same period last year, 29 per cent of units were sold in the US and 22 per cent were in China, UBS said.

Bigger market plus people already having several iterations of the phone circulating in US makes this not surprising, no?

Things like this will only increase. China will soon have a middle class larger than most of Europe combined. Same goes for India. In a globalized world, the countries with the largest consumer, workforce and educated populaces will be dominant. Think about how good the US has it on some goods in relation to other countries like the UK or Canada, and now think maybe 20-30 years from now, how good China and India will have it in relation to the US. Will corporations really give preference to 200 million American middle class consumers or 800 million Chinese and Indians?

It's really impressive though and you can see why every company bends over backwards to enter the Chinese market, There is just so much money to be made. Though Apple will have to contend with rising stars Xiaomi and ZTE.

That's quite a huge change in share for a single year. Massive growth in China, drop in US sales or a bit of both?

If this is correct and US shipments grew, Apple will crush expectations this quarter.

US shipments grew a ton last quarter by all indications (recent report the other day came out that stated iOS has grown to cross the 50% threshold in the US market for smartphones in Q4 2014), the 6/6+ launch was by far their most successful launch. It is very likely to be to be Apple's best quarter ever in iPhone sales.

No shit.

Even people making $500 a month have iPhones there. All about that appearance of wealth.

That's not that much different from here, honestly.

Anyway, that's a pretty insane shift over the course of a year. If that trend continues, almost half of all iphones will be sold in China next year.

Really big expectations for Apple this quarter. I'm seeing many firms expecting 70m+ sold for iPhone which is like 40% growth over 2013 Q4 (51m).

Crazy that Apple is seeing growth like this when you consider how expensive iPhones are, Apple is really something else.

Hmm... Let's see... Massive number of people suffering from nouveau-riche affluenza + brand generally seen as luxury/status symbol for upward mobility...

Yeah, I have no idea why it would sell so well.
