The Witcher 3: 1080p/30fps on PS4, 900p/30fps on Xbox One

Thinking my "minimum" PC isn't as minimum as they claim if PS4 can do near-high settings equivalent. Although knowing them, high is actually relatively low, cause they go low, medium, high, very high, super high, ultra high, super ultra high, ubermacktastic high, i'm-batman's-gaming-rig, dyson-sphere, god-is-a-computer.

This thread reads like a greatest hits of 2013. And here was me thinking that 'the power of the cloud' talk had died down.

I own a ps4 and an Xbox one.
It's your choice sir, "I guess your friends are there", "you prefer the controller", "XBLIVE is bettah" or perhaps "you just want to spread the multiplat luv". It's usually one of those. Anyhoo's

Man, some folk are still on that "I can't see the difference between 900p and 1080p spiel". In Seanspeed's case, I could swear that he mentioned owning a 1440p monitor, so I'm really not sure why he wasted his money there. He should have just gotten a 1080p native screen and play all his pc games at 900p, it's not like he could tell the difference from native anyway. Better frames per second at least, a win win for him I guess.

It's really weird that it went off in this direction too, I don't understand why anybody gets overly happy when the PS4 performs better or overly upset when it's suggested that the XB1 is weaker by a decent margin.

Might be offensive, but my theory is that fanboys for both sides want their console to be better in at least one way--sales, power, games, etc. My guess is that XB1 fanboys got riled up and happy at Nov and Dec NPD results, and so this is the first high-profile event since then where the PS4 outpaces the XB1 by a large margin, so PS4 fanboys, fed up with the aforementioned and annoyed at what many feel is "forced parity" revel in this as much as possible, while XB1 fanboys come in to derail that as much as possible. At the same time, all the moderates and PC gamers just stand back in confusion.

On the topic of comparing the price of a PC to the prices of newgen consoles, it has no sense to count the monitor because consoles don't come bundled with TVs.
But it would be only logic and fair to add a good input solution to the bill (good gaming mouse or controller) because ps4 and xb1 come with great ones.

I have no idea why either. 1080/900 splits are the most common differences between the two consoles. If anything, everyone on console should be happy since this is one of the games I expected to struggle on the resolution front. Most XBO owners are generally satisfied with 900p as well.

I got kinda ticked off when they just put specs out with with no context. Not even an "aiming for"

Why has this thread become a PC vs PS4 dick measuring contest? PC,XB1,PS4,Wii U gamer here and guess what PC > PS4 >XB1 > Wii U its been that way since the systems released. Why are we having this discussion? Depending on your set up yes its going to look and play better on PC that's just the way it is. As far as the whole how much does a monitor vs television cost lets not go there. My 4k curved costs more than my entire rig, my GPU costs more than my day one XB1. No matter how you look at it gaming is an expensive hobby.

Does 900p vs 1080p really matter still? Do people really still care? Also the XB1 upscales to 1080p, now I don't sit there playing native 1080p games like FH2 then switch to 900p upscaled games and think, oh my god that 900p looks awful. I can't tell the difference.

Also isn't W3 still 4 months away? I hate to think what the comments will be on here if they do managed to hit 1080p on the X1

I've got both, and I am happy to see PS4 versions turn out better because it means the developer is using the hardware I've paid for to the fullest.

There's no reason Xbox One should match PS4 this gen, and that's why almost all games have had an advantage on PS4. Unity pissed me off because somehow Ubi made it look identical on PS4 as it did on the weaker system, and their suspicious parity comments made it sound like they were not trying to use the extra power in PS4. That combined with CPU meant somehow that botched release was better at launch on Xbox One, and that just doesn't happen with any other games for a good reason. Unity was the first game to have that kind of mess this gen.

Better on PS4 means the developer doesn't put bias in the way of giving their bigger audience what they paid for with a PS4.

My HDTV is still 1080p so yeah, it still matters if I can get a game running at the same resolution. I can tell the games that are 900p are blurrier than 1080p games. Ryse and BF4 (PS4) come to mind. 1600x900 is a lot better than 1280x720, so there's that.

And if the XB1 version of TW3 hits the same resolution and frame-rate as the PS4 version, then PS4's GPU advantage has to be going somewhere else or PS4 isn't being taken advantage of.

I don't think it matters for people who only own one of the consoles (for obvious reasons) but at the very least, it definitely matters for multiple console owners.

And many people can tell the difference.

Hopefully CDPR can utilize the DX12 and the unlocking of that new core to get 1080/30 on the xbone before or shortly after release.

Well you must have great eye sight or a very different setup/viewing distance to me ;) I don't notice a blurrier image at all.

God your right, hopefully they won't hit 1080p on the XB1 after all otherwise we will get those "ps4 version gimped/downgraded" arguments resurface again

People arnt saying they cant notice it, but are saying the difference is small enough that they only notice it if looking at side by side comparisons, lets be honest here 900p vs 1080p does produce only marginally more aliasing in average gaming environments.

and yeah to some people friends, controller, online service is more important then a tiny difference in visuals, for some the difference is that small its a non factor.

also maybe Microsoft should send a team down to help out like they did with diabo 3 and destiny, maybe they already have with it being a MS promoted game.

Wow, that thread is a great read. I am halfway through, and it already bring back some great memories from a couple of years ago ^^

Just a couple of things about the PC build price, you guys should implement the controller/keyboard/mouse, as well as the OS in the price. I am actually interested in changing my computer rig soon, so if you guys can reach a consensus on a well-balanced / not-too-expensive, and able to sustain all future next gen game in 1080p / 60 fps, that could be really interesting for me - and probably many people here that aren't too well versed in those topics. I am still wondering how this discussion got to this, but still, if this thread can serve a purpose, that would be sweet !

There is no way we can know that for sure. 60fps at what settings ? Regardless, there is a thread for that :

Well apparently this got mentioned at some point

Witcher 3 lead programmer Balazs Torok on DX12:

“I think there is a lot of confusion around what and why DX12 will improve. Most games out there can’t go 1080p because the additional load on the shading units would be too much. For all these games DX12 is not going to change anything. They might be able to push more triangles to the GPU but they are not going to be able to shade them, which defeats the purpose."

Although the PS4 CPU will never be upclocked, that doesn't mean core reservation for games has to stay the same if they can optimize the OS to run on one. Software upgrades are still upgrades after

This will likely be the case. The ps4 cpu won't ever be upclocked because it is bin rated at 1.6 ghz due to the systems overall tdp limits and to increase chip yields, but it will likely get a 7th core for use in games (as long as devs abide by certain constraints in that scenario).

If the PS4 version is 1080p and at rock solid 30FPS with settings close to High on PC, I'm more than satisfied. Let's see if CDRP can still improve it before release.

I own both consoles and buy whatever version is better. So far, It has been PS4 every time. I didn't buy Unity because I could see that garbage a mile away. And that seems to be the one game that is better on Xbox One?

I got a chance to play PvZ:GW on XBO a few days ago (900p), and playing on PS4 (1080p) the resolution bump is definitely noticeable. On XBO it looks "blurry", for lack of better word.

If people can't tell the difference, why even get a current gen console? Last gen consoles are cheaper and have more games.

That being said, as an XBO owner, I'm content with 900p without any performance compromises.

I hope they implant some form of UI Scaling, as I plan to get a new PC this year and would like to play Witcher 3 on my TV.

That's pretty impressive for the PS4, if its indeed running close to High PC settings. I wonder how close to 'High' the lighting/shadows will be.

I wonder if my machine will be able to hit 1440/60... >_>

Maybe that just means the devs are short-changing the PC version like they always do.

almost thought this was a thread from 2014 for a second, people seem sorta surprised

This thread reads like a greatest hits of 2013. And here was me thinking that 'the power of the cloud' talk had died down.

I feel the same way. Current gen open world RPG game -- difference should pretty much be viewed as the norm now (especially for that genre). Didn't know this was still a hot topic.

How on earth does someone with the moniker "TechMaster" come up with a question like this?

Have you seen the latest SDK updates, CPU bound and 7th core talk? You have. That just basically started everything over.

Haha, good point. It's 2015 -- people simply need to accept the power difference. Too many good looking games coming out this year for it to still be a hot topic.

Most people have at this point, which is why it's so unbelievable to me when there's someone who think the gap shouldn't be there.
