What is this game?
Grim Fandango is a dark comedy neo-noir adventure game released by LucasArts in 1998 for Windows, with Tim Schafer as the game's project leader. It is the first adventure game by LucasArts to use 3D computer graphics overlaid on pre-rendered, static backgrounds. As with other LucasArts adventure games, the player must converse with other characters and examine, collect, and use objects correctly to solve puzzles in order to progress.

Grim Fandango 's world combines elements of the Aztec belief of afterlife with style aspects of film noir, including The Maltese Falcon, On the Waterfront and Casablanca, to create the Land of the Dead, through which recently departed souls, represented in the game as calaca-like figures, must travel before they reach their final destination, the Ninth Underworld. The story follows travel agent Manuel "Manny" Calavera as he attempts to save Mercedes "Meche" Colomar, a newly arrived but virtuous soul, during her long journey.

The game received universal acclaim from critics, who praised its artistic design and overall game direction in particular. Grim Fandango was selected for several gaming awards at the time of release, and is often listed in publishers' lists of top games of all time. However, the game was considered a commercial failure and factored into LucasArts' termination of their adventure game development, contributing to the decline of the adventure game genre.

Remastered?
A remastered release of Grim Fandango was announced in June 2014 during Sony Computer Entertainment's press event of the 2014 Electronic Entertainment Expo, to be released simultaneously for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux platforms. The remastered version was predicated on the transition of LucasArts from a developer and publisher into a licensor and publisher in 2013 shortly after its acquisition by Disney. Under new management, LucasArts licensed several of its intellectual properties (IP), including Grim Fandango, to outside developers. Schafer was able to acquire the rights to the game with financial assistance from Sony, and started the process of building out the remaster within Double Fine Productions. Schafer said that the sale of LucasArts to Disney had reminded them of the past efforts of former LucasArts president Darrell Rodrigeuz to release the older LucasArts titles as Legacy Properties, such as the 2009 rerelease of The Secret of Monkey Island, and they began to seek ways to acquire these properties. Though Double Fine approached other companies, they found significant help from Adam Boyes, Sony's vice president of publisher and developer relations, who also wanted to see Grim Fandango rereleased. Boyes and Schafer agreed that the re-release would need to be remastered, and the two companies worked together to secure the IP and remastered development funding.

In addition to his own developers, Schafer reached to players who had created unofficial patches and graphical improvements on the original game, and modifications needed to keep it running in ResidualVM, and gained their help to improve the game's assets for the remastered version. One such feature was a modified control scheme that converted the game's movement controls from the tank-style controls to a point and click-style interface. Schafer noted they created the game with tank-style control as it was popular with other games like Resident Evil at the time, but recognized it did not work well within the adventure game genre. Schafer contacted Tobias Pfaff who created the point-and-click modification to obtain access to his code to incorporate into the remastered version.

A major complication in remastering the original work was having many of the critical game files go missing. Schafer noted at the time of Grim Fandango 's original development, retention of code was not as rigorous as present day standards, and in some cases, Schafer believes the only copies of some files were unintentionally taken by employees when they had left LucasArts. As such, Schafer and his team have been going back through past employee records to try to trace down any of them and ask for any files they may have saved. In other cases, they have had difficulty in identifying elements on the low-resolution artwork of the original game, such as an emblem on one character's hat, and have had to go looking for original concept art to figure out the design.

Double Fine demonstrated an in-progress version of the remastered game at the 2014 IndieCade event in October 2014; new features included higher-resolution background textures, improved resolution for the character models as well as having real-time lighting models, and the ability to switch back and forth between this presentation and the original graphics at the touch of a control; though at the time of the IndieCade event, the game remained in the 4:3 aspect ratio, Double Fine plans to support widescreen aspect ratios by release. The remaster will include improvements to the control scheme developed by a fan as a mod for the original version of the game. The game's soundtrack will be fully orchestrated through performances of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (who also performed the soundtrack for Double Fine's Broken Age), and will also feature developer commentary.

Hello,

For those of you who pre-ordered Grim Fandango Remastered and have already pre-loaded the game, you may need to re-download the game in order to play it.

Here's how:

Re-download steps for pre-order users
Return to the PS4 store and purchase the free version of the game (this SKU will only be visible to pre-order users at around 9pm PST.) Purchase the SKU only, do not re-download at this point.
Restore PS4 licenses. [Settings] > [PSN] > [Restore License]. If this doesn't solve the issue continue to step 3.
Go to Library, highlight Grim Fandango and press Options.
Delete Game Content.
While still in the Library highlight Grim Fandango and press X to re-download the content.
Restore licenses again.

Hope this helps,

I wish I was amongst the people who've never played it before so that I could discover the story again.
But I'm looking forward to revisiting the land of the dead all the same. It's going to be great.

Looking forward to playing this game! Big fan of Tim Schaefer and never really got the chance to play it back in the day.

I preordered on PS4 and was getting a release date of 1 day and 2 hours or so. Will redownloading this game fix that?

Been playing the remaster, and it's great. For achievement whores that don't want to spoil too much, a lot of them seem to be tied to exhausting dialogue options.

Really looking forward to this. I'm a huuuuuuge fan of Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max: Hit the Road, the first two Monkey Island games, and most of the things Double Fine has done. Never got a chance to play this, though.

So who's gonna brave the tank controls? :D

I think I might. I replayed Grim Fandango for the first time in ages about a year or so ago and went keyboard-only (despite the fact that an excellent point-and-click mod exists for PC) and it was fine!

Already pre-ordered on Steam. Looking forward to playing it when I get off work. This is my favorite of the LucasArts adventure games.

As much as I adore the game, I'm looking forward to the new controls and such. Will replay after for the trophy.

I'll patiently wait for the physical double pack with Day of the Tentacle Remastered. I sadly, don't have more space in my 8 gb memory card. :(

Nope. Just tried that. And it doesn't even look like its for sale in the store now... Weird.

I will be! I LOVED the game when it first came out (tank controls and all) and I want the trophy.

Tank controls will suck for the first 10-15 minutes until I get used to them, and then it will be fine. Its not like there is a lot of high speed action or anything.

So... this has 3 control setups now in total, correct? P&C interface now, as well as 360 direction control scheme, and original tank controls, right?

I wonder if PS4 version will have P&C using the touch pad as a mouse of sorts? That'd be cool, and it makes a lot of sense if VITA had P&C.

I will. love the game, but don't know if I'll be able to play it twice in any short period of time. might as well go for that trophy now.

plus, it's how I played the game when it originally came out. why not stay true to my childhood.
