Grim Fandango Remastered |OT| The Excelsior Line Edition

I'm downloading the Steam version right now, and hopefully I won't run into any issue, and also I hope they solve all the bugs and stuff soon.

Now, all those technical issues aside, for both PS4 and PC. I'm not feeling like this is a trully well done remaster after all. I just bought it because it was cheap in Steam, and because I've never played Grim Fandango.

But come on, by what I've been reading, this "remaster" is more like a re-release, with some control mods in the package:
1- No true 16:9 support.
2- No auto-saving.
3- No hints system.
4- No big graphical improvements.

I would expect more of a "remaster". But maybe I'm expecting a lot, since I just played Resident Evil Remaster HD, and that was pretty awesome.

16:9 and radical graphical changes would hurt the game. I'm glad they didn't try and shoehorn those in. 4:3 is the way to play.

You also didn't mention the orchestrated soundtrack or director's commentary.

Idk if it has been raised earlier in the thread. But since the preload were on locking a day late the Sony solution was to try to restore license or else delete and redownload. So I deleted it and in the store it still says play and won't let me redownload it.

It had a countdown time for 10 hours remaining so I went to the PS Store and the game showed the "Start" button. It then told me that the application was already downloading.

Ok, so I deleted the preload. Went back to the store to try and download the game again. Now it just says "Start" and when I try it says it can't find the application. If I go into my library it says the same thing. Tells me to check the PSN store, etc. So I'm stuck in an infinite loop.

Maybe that was covered in the thread already but any fix?

EDIT: Going to try and download from the playstation store website. Just noticed that one.

About an hour or so in on my first playthrough (Steam). Really enjoying it so far! The story/world seems to be very intriguing, and the voice acting is absolutely top notch.

Some of the puzzles are already a little "wtf I would have never thought of that" but you know, adventure games. Or maybe I'm just dumb.

1. 16:9 is barely acceptable for REmake, but wouldn't work at all for this game as it would cut off the top of the image that requires player interaction.
2. Just save yourself? I don't see the point of this as a feature.
3. Hint system would be nice if someone is truly stuck. I've managed to get my mindset into adventure game mode and figure out the puzzles so far, but I've heard that many of the solutions are somewhat obscure.
4. Double Fine seems to have updated all of the textures on the models. They look very clean, especially in comparison to the FMV movies.

Both REmake and Grim Fandango remasters have their faults, but they are just about in the best possible situation considering the situation. Pre-rendered backgrounds make it incredibly difficult to go from 4:3 to 16:9 without a full remake, which would be prohibitively expensive considering they are both niche products at this point.
I'm just glad these games exist, especially on PC where they can be preserved for subsequent play throughs down the road. Both games were becoming increasingly difficult to track down and expensive, in Grim Fandango's case, very difficult to get running on modern systems.

It's been mentioned on almost every page. Redownload using the Download List on the web store.

We need this in the OP:

Step 1:

Delete from your PS4

Step 2:

Go to store.playstation.com (or your regions equivalent)

Step 3:

Highlight over your name and press download list

Step 4:

Click on the PS4 version of Grim Fandango and press "download to your PS4"

Preloaded. Game won't let me play for 12 more hours. My system isn't primary. Sony is so fucking stupid sometimes. It's not a big deal, but they knew for days that the unlock timing was wrong, and didn't fix it.

I really hope we all get access to the theme when the store updates.

If not refund will be a go for the Steam version.

I'll buy the them if it hopefully goes on sale one day :(

I'm usually the guy that says, "man, I wish I was someone who hadn't played this game so that I could experience it new all over again!"

This time I am that guy who will experience something new :D

Heard nothing but great things about this one for nearly a decade and a half.

On Vita and PC.

wow thats really lame. The fuck is the touchpad for then?

The only dissapointing thing about this so far. I was curious to see and try the point and click controls out after seeing the making of.

Aside from that im loving the game but thats seriously stupid.

Huh? I thought they added point and click controls to the remastered version?

They did in the PC version, and I'm pretty sure it's in the Vita version. Don't know how they handled it on PS4, but on PC you just move the mouse. Doesn't matter if you're playing with the gamepad (or keyboard) at the same time, the moment you move the mouse the interface changes to a point & click interface.

Edit: Oops, way too late.

Yeah I remember playing this on PC years ago and it was hard as balls. I think people are gonna be consulting walkthroughs constantly.

Ive had to consult a walkthrough a few times, but mostly minor puzzles. Solved a ton of then on my own which Im proud of :). Just passed year one! Game is amazing, great humor, lovely atmosphere and the noir style is appreciated a lot. Good music too.

Problems in this game are really hard to solve. I think hint system can make the game better.

Yeah I remember playing this on PC years ago and it was hard as balls. I think people are gonna be consulting walkthroughs constantly.

You also have to remember that when the game came out, the target audience were a playerbase with a lot of adventure puzzle gaming experience from previous LucasArts and Sierra games. So yeah, I'd expect a lot of the game can be difficult for new players if they aren't familiar with these kinds of games.

Yeah. Not sure if I'm just a little thick headed but I had to consult a walkthrough TWICE in my first hour. And they weren't "oh, duh" moments either.

I'm stuck right now but I refuse to look at a walkthrough.

I just
attended the poisoning and brought that guy back from the body bag in the cafe

Now I have no clue what to do/where to go next =\

I swear I've checked every area. Got the fire extinguisher too.

What were the puzzles you were stuck on?

End of Year 2 Spoilers:

Cat Racing Bet Puzzle:
I was having difficulty figuring out the pictures numbers on the ticket machine. I was able to figure out Tuesday due to the kitty hats and the 6th race because of the giant 6 on the scoreboard. Somebody in the chat on my stream said look at the cat statue. The second they said that I realized that the blimp in the picture is the one that crashes which is how you get the 2nd week.

If you want hints then here's one.

You need to find a lead to a good sale. Explore your office to begin

Edit: shit double post

Yep, reviewers had to look up walkthroughs for this game too when it was first released. It wasn't as bad as other games of the genre, but without prior experience it can be frustrating. I'm really surprised there are no hints in this.

I had to go PSN's website. Had to go to my download list, and hit download to PS4 and Vita. Had the same glitch as others, where it wouldn't download after buying it on PS4. Would just chance to START. And then bug out saying it couldn't find the application.

I preordered this a few days ago. I played it back in the day but never finished it. I remember loving the setting and characters and thinking it was full of imagination. I was 13 so I honestly don't remember much other than Manny, a cruise ship, and the big headed orange dude with a car.

A few:
Hole punching the Ace card. Filling the balloons with the packing material and sending them down the tube. And unlocking the bolt on the door in the message room.

i could remember this and every other puzzle so far, that was mentioned here, because i still have them all memorized. but to be honest, i had the strategy guide, when i played the original as a kid. i don't think i would have been able to solve everything without, so i kinda feel with the people here, who got stuck.

It's crazy how much of a difference the touched-up models and new lighting makes. The characters pretty much "fit in" with the prerendered backgrounds now. So good.

Vita version is a letdown, expected a bit more performance-wise, but I'll probably still play a good deal on the go (especially when I do a second playthrough for commentary and for the tank control trophy... son of a bitch Tim).
