I feel really bad for her. Hopefully the kickstarter money heals the boo-boos.
I think it's funny that for all the talk about "gamer" culture, and it being an identity that a collective can be apart of. This idea of being a gamer, as something people can find comradery. If that's true, then gamers should be absolutely angry that their fellow gamers that are female/or minority, are not able to enjoy the same hobby the same way others can. That almost half of "gamers" are being harassed daily.
And whenever you are apart of a group, you are supposed to care about others in the group. So if other gamers are trying to tell you there are things that you could do to make them feel more comfortable, you should listen. If other people in the group are trying to speak out against things that are wrong, you should hear them out.
But nope. Pretty much, everyone is looking out for themselves. I know what I enjoy, I don't care about anyone else. Don't get involved in messing with the things I like.
This is what i came here to say essentially, i may not agree with her 100% but the shit she has to deal with is ridiculous.Wow. I may not agree with everything she says about how women are treated in gaming, but no one deserves to be treated like that...ever. The sad thing is just HOW MANY people are doing it...and that's only ONE WEEK. Like, good lord, one week's worth of stuff? I'm terrified to think of what she's accumulated over the past two years.
Man...
There has been a pretty consistent pattern of sexist/racist abuse in this industry, that I don't think we can just write this off as being the negatives of being famous. We've had clear talks about issues in gaming itself, and gotten direct attacks that go beyond just shit talking. I agree that, people who are famous or who make their opinions heard, are almost always going to get negative attacks against them from assholes on the internet. This is an issue that goes beyond the gaming industry. It's been an issue ever since the internet has been around.
But I think at this point, we can say that this is a bigger issue. We have a clear want for, the industry to start changing in certain ways. And there is a clear push back from a group of people. And it's unacceptable
Just because something is expected does not mean that it is acceptable.
I am losing my faith in humanity. These scumbags are horrible and their twitter accounts should be banned. Props to her for keeping up with this even though I do not necessarily agree to everything she says in her videos.
Is she the one that made that Bayonetta video? its obvious she never played, or just barely watched the game to argument the context, its kinda hard to take her seriously if she is not willing to do basic research.
Do her other videos also do this, or she has much better arguments?
(i could not find the other thread so i posted this here, the comments on twitter are awful,if this doesnt belong here i will remove it later)
Do you think most of the people who dislike her or her videos on principle think...
I don't take it personally just some people are using this as a reason to fund her and while I get it, I still wouldn't as I don't believe she has done enough since her last kickstarter. Also I called it out because a user above me had called out men and the reality is that it isn't just men attacking her. There's very heavy use of the N-word and FA-word within GamerGate. Can't say I understand it other than a boilerplate psychological generalization about being able to say whatever you want anonymously while on the internet. So, "for lulz".
I don't suppose you'd care to explain how this matters? And on the later, uh, no one is asking you to fund her, so I'm not sure why you're taking it so personally.
There's much to be said for 'not letting the bullies win'. They'd dance on that digital corpse until the end of time. She knows this, unfortunately. Also, I'd edit that later unless you're here attempting to get banned.
I feel like a lot of these post are either from children or massive trolls. I find it really hard to believe a reasonable human being with normal intelligence would be capable of posting these messages. I don't know how anyone could consider them threatening when most of them are so obviously insincere.

Some of these are so fucked up I can't help laughing, are these people for real?
The people who send her this kinda stuff because they don't like what she does, only further allow her to garner support. Isn't this how it all began anyways?
Those who don't like what she does have no one to blame but themselves for the progress she's making. When she shares stuff like this it's very easy to want to show sympathy for her even if you don't agree with what she does.
Rape and death threats are nothing unexpected?
If gamergate has shown us anything, it's that these people are indeed sincere. The fact that they'll use their real names to post absolute drivel or participate in what's widely acknowledged as a hate group, and all of it in public, shows that they aren't anonymous trolls.
Unless the fact that there are people who sincerely believe this sort of ridiculous horseshit is some sort of meta-troll
Uhg, I said some pretty disgusting shit like this when I was ~12 years old. I am going on 22 and am still ashamed of what a troll I used to be. I can only hope a lot of those posts are from stupid ass kids like I was that will soon realize how big of pieces of shit they are.
I've seen people on other sites try to justify this by defending each individual comment. It's just gross and awful and stuff like this really makes me feel bad for participating in gaming culture.
Lol this guy hahaha![]()
Amazing.
Edit: Went to that guys twitter, it's not a troll. Even more amazing that someone exists who said that in seriousness.
Some of the most vocal proponents are all about using their real names. They've found a way to successfully monetize hate (not surprising when the hate group is based around crass consumerism) and are mostly adults with families, in some cases daughters of their own. They're crafty enough not to tweet anything as blatantly vile as these tweets, but are more than happy to lean back while the people that follow them do. These tweets are like random Facebook commenters, and the proponents are the sparkling Sarah Palins in their profiles.

Same here, I already have one foot out the proverbial door with this industry, and the longer this continues, the less I want to do with this industry.
Just seeing some of these comments (and stuff from Gamergate or Ferguson) with people's real names and real pictures, all of which can easily be found with a simple google search by a future employer, is just incredibly eye-rolling to me. There's a generation of people who grew up thinking that being an asshole on the internet (and in real life I guess) has zero consequences
Just skip past the part where people threaten to rape and murder her because you think she didn't play Bayonetta. Mmkay.
B-b-but it's about ethics in games journalisms!
She didn't play Bayonetta properly, therefore her opinion is invalid and she deserves to be raped and murdered.
Just think about it this way: not only did she not play Bayonetta to the correct standard she's also out there right now having sex with men who might be journalists or game developers using her actual vagina. If that's not worthy of her getting cancer I don't know what is.
We can't get ethics in games journalisms if these women are allowed to say things we don't like or have breasts like the ones whores do.
GamerGate...where gamers don't care that half of their fellow gamers get harassed daily and enjoy their hobby the same way they do. Give me a break.
Y'know, if you hadn't smashed the reply button so quickly you might have picked up on the undercurrent of sarcasm in that post.

I picked up on it but you might want to be careful. some accounts have been shut down on this thread and I cant say the mods will see it as well as I did. Since im super smart u know![]()

It was obvious to me.
It's because they don't even want a discussion. So the only way to try to get it to stop, is to try to shout people down, and harass people until they break down and give up. If these people actually disagreed with her, then they could have debated the issues they don't agree on.
Sadly, I wish Anita didn't take the no discussion approach. The there is no room for debate on certain tropes or issues. That these ARE in fact 100% misogynistic. Her brand of criticism alienates and only gets people angry that don't agree. Because the reality is:
I. Not all feminists agree on the same things. That is important. So discussion is a good thing. And conversely, not all people agree on the same things.
II. The industry has a lot of people that are ignorant, due to a lack of knowing about these issues/problems.
III. A lot of people in the industry don't see the problems, because they are used to years and years of things being one way, so they are used to things being a certain way.
So your goal is then to, educate these people as to why these issues are a problem. Why they matter. Why you think the industry has to change. But if your approach is: this is 100% misogynistic. And there is no room for debate. You've already cut off feminists and people that might not agree with you (and by not allowing them to discuss it, they now view you as someone that is beyond reason, and not willing to have a conversation). You upset those that are used to things having been that way for years years. Who are now being told the things they like or the things they do are 100% misogynistic. And you turn off those that have not yet been educated on it, because they might not always agree 1:1 with what you are saying (even if they might see your points on some things).
Basically, the approach is very problematic. I'm not a fan of it. And I think moving forward, those in games media and those that are activists, really need to start re-thinking how they are pushing these messages. Because I think they have been alienating to certain degrees.

All this said, when you have insane psychos that are not civil. When you consider that, just being female and speaking out about issues you have (regardless how you say it), you are by default going to get harassed and threatened. Well, I can't be too critical of they approach these things. But I personally don't think it's the right way to go about it. So this isn't a condemnation of Anita (I personally do not agree with some of her views, and I don't like her approach tbh. But I know the kind of shit she goes through, so I try not to be judgmental on how she approaches this, given the amount of shit she was going to get regardless just for speaking out). But I do look at like, Kotaku offering to have a counter argument editorial to her (where she would participate, and reply back to the counter argument). This would be 100% civil and a closed forum w/ civil people. And she declined. So eh. Based on what I've read of her (and interviews), I don't think she would have ever been open to discussion. Even if there was no psychos and trolls.

It was obvious to me.
I mean the first line was "B-b-but it's about ethics"
pretty obvious.
also going to start taking a shot for each person who says "they're just threats on the net" or some variant
Spot on, matching my opinion of the situation completely.
