Valkyria Chronicles 50% off on Steam for some reason!

I generally find anime and it's fans to be somewhat repulsive, but this was one of two games that made my PS3 purchase worthwhile (the other being Demon's Souls, which I still find superior to either Dark Souls game).

It's an absolute steal at $10.

I find it astounding that people can unironically make comments like this, I guess one should never underestimate people's inability to think about what they're saying/writing. "I generally find film and it's fans to be somewhat repulsive", "I generally find tv and it's fans to be somewhat repulsive", "I generally find literature and it's fans to be somewhat repulsive". Oh well, what would a day on the internet be without shocking displays of unthinkingly dismissive ignorance?

This game just wasn't for me. Didn't like the character progression. Though it has a nice art style. It's worth trying out I guess, but there are much better SRPGs around.

For some reason Valkyria Chronicles is still on sale!
Amazon.com pricematched the deal (and gives a Steam key)

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00P1RDZJU/?tag=neogaf0e-20

maybe some people prefer buying there. Sadly us Europeans can't save much anymore because of the exchange rate.

I don't think there's a single person out there that would prefer to buy from Amazon over Steam, especially since you need to make-believe America to do it.

Still neat that they price match it; I can't think of any other digital retailer that does it for digital downloads.

Back when the € was higher compared to the $, I greatly preferred ordering from Amazon to buying on Steam :P

Now that it's only ~10% it doesn't make much of a difference for smaller purchases.

I'd say there are plenty of people. Just go over to CAG and see how much people hope Amazon price matches everything, generally because they've built up a lot of credit.

Such an over-rated game. Neither myself nor my friends enjoyed it.

You hear all these people talking about what a great Strategy RPG it is, but its audience is geared to one group: anime fanatics.

It's one of the shallowest RPGs you can ask for. On the story side, you have zero interaction, just watching stilted anime slides that drag on forever. On the mechanic side, advancement is as vague as possible. Instead of advancing soldiers, you just advance soldier types, and instead of picking how you advance them, you just move them along a linear progression path. Leveling them up is just holding down a button while your XP fills a bar, then "ding!" they level up and you assume something changed.

It's also one of the shallowest Strategy games. The enemy AI is pathetic, and will frequently waste turns bouncing units back and forth in the fog of war rather than take another shot with a unit that's clearly in LOS. Enemies are clearly running under a very simplistic script that can easily be abused, and it sucks all the challenge out of the game once you understand the massive gaping holes in the AI's capabilities.

Worse is the nature of the port itself. We're talking Dark Souls bad, but without the fan patch to fix it. 70% of your time in-game will be spent meandering through menus, yet you can't even use the fucking mouse. I remember it takes almost a dozen key presses just to save the game, and that's something you need to remember to do because the game doesn't auto-save between chapters. Have a game crash (which will happen) and you could lose hours of progression.

It's just a mess, and I'd only recommend it for people desperate to consume some B-tier anime story in a D-tier game.

I have never watched an anime that I liked besides akira and grave of the fireflies and I was enthralled with Valkyria chronicles. Also, not being able to use a mouse in menus doesn't make it 'dark souls' bad. That is some series exaggeration. Also you're wrong about the upgrading, the weapons branch out after a while to allow some customization, not to mention each character has unique traits. Also the real tweaking lies in actually choosing your squad for each mission, which gives the game a ton of flexibility. Not sure how a streamlined upgrade system is a bad thing anyway, with that many characters it would take ages to fully customize your whole squad. It's ok that you didn't like it, I just wanted to point out that much of what you said here is inaccurate and downright silly.

Bleh, all of the games that look pretty interesting to me always go on sale when I'm broke.

I've heard it's really good but, out of curiosity for when the game goes on sale when I do have money, what makes it so good (gameplay wise, I mean)? One other question: I don't really like anime, so would I dislike the game's story?

I really dislike anime and still found Valkyria chronicles to have an awesome, touching and grounded story. Still, it did have some of those annoying tropes that anime is known for.

I'm sure anyone who has Amazon store credit would prefer to buy a Steam key on Amazon.

And make-believe America? Are you talking about region locking stuff?

So I just bought this game,

Jrpgs are not my thing, neither is turn based (but I somewhat have wanted to get into Rpgs) and I hate hard games.

Did I make a mistake?

Once you get a feel for all the tools available to you, you'll understand the game is not that hard. The theme of every mission is to explore your options and if you fail a mission, just start over with your new knowledge.

Also it's an SRPG, not a JRPG. So you don't have to worry about certain JRPG negative baggage sneaking into the game.

Highly recommended above all else to play through the game first blind, then on your second playthrough to aim for the A-Ranks.

Awesome. I was going to wait for a sale on this and here it is. $10 is good enough to double dip. I bought the game on PS3 when it first came out and got through around 75% of it. This will be a great replay.

Strange how it ended up on sale though. I got no wishlist notification or anything. Stealth deal!

Whoa dude

Hyperbole up the wazoo. I can see you criticisms through the fog. Its not my favorite strategy game but its FAR from as bad as you describe.

I personally cant stand Turn Phase Strategy games though. I like the more active approach where turns are broken up by individual speed. That way you done have to sit and watch an entire team move before you use your controller again (like chess)

FFT did this the best

Heavily tempted to buy, but I got up until the very end of the game on PS3 and then read up on the ending so there's not much real point. I'm definitely going to let my girlfriend know about the deal tho.

To be fair, as I realize my post may have made me sound "meh" on the game; I think it's a fan-fucking-tastic game. I do not like strategy games, but this was something else. I lost count of how many epic clutch moments I had. One in particular was the Eldenwiess was pinned down and almost done, all my other squad members are down sans for a single scout, who managed to complete the mission with a hit left on her, taking down several enemies on the way. Goddamn it was magical. And yeah, a certain part of the story made me fucking cry, I ended up caring for the characters so much. Even tho I never beat it, it was one of the most satisfying games I ever played.

So yeah, this a fantastic game, I just don't feel that I'll get around to replaying it so I'm not gonna drop the 8 bucks.
