Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Since I couldnt recover the files, the universe is starting from scratch (sorry Retro!).

I was tearing down the old to put up the new anyways, and the base I was replacing was more of a "Quick, get something put together at spawn"-type affair anyways. Now I can build whatever, unrestricted. Just need to come up with a concept and run with it.

The only problem I have now is hunting for more soft / painted brick and making Titanium doors. Or a new material, if that's the direction I want to go in.

Built up a quickie spawn. Don't care if it stays or if Retro takes it out. Everything there is extras.

But as a spawn it's got turrets and proxy doors so at least it's convenient

Hey, I haven't done anything with wiring yet, so it sounds like the new base already has a leg up on the old one. I'm not sure what I'll end up doing with the base, my favorite plan (yes, I actually plan these things) so far would require a spawn in the sky and a massive earth-moving process, so that one will have to wait.

I might just build out the quickie base and then go hunting for a different planet to build on (though that was before everyone loaded in to the same Garden biome). I'd like to do something like an oceanic base above and beneath the waves like an oil rig or something.

They need the vehicle / elevator release ASAP, that's all I'm gonna say.

I'm a little put off by pickaxes now. They remove Stone Pickaxes, and then weaken the shit out of all the rest. Why would they do this?

Haven't played the update yet but didn't they massively boost the performance of the Matter Manipulator?

No. It's still pretty weak.

they changed things to where the matter manipulator ill be your go to tool. it will be upgraded over the course of the game

Oh, ok. I thought it was weird that the game told me to build a pickaxe when I could already use the multi tool thing. Tried it out anyway and the the pickaxe seems to be faster for digging at the moment. I don't think I'll put anymore resources towards that anymore though.

They have to balance it. Right now, the breakable picks and drills will be completely useless later on, but way better in the beginning. Matter manipulator is needed to get liquids, and it can be upgraded to mine 4x4 space.

Mining for core fragments on the first planet, especially without the lamp, is so fucking painful.

So, that first mission, in the mining station... what a bore. It has a mind-numbing and painstakingly tedious design, one whose "difficulty" is fully decided by how slowly the player wants to move through the level. All of its problems are further amplified by the complete disconnect it has with the rest of Starbound; namely, the inability to manipulate the environment at all. If the player has a weak ranged weapon or few healing items, they'll be in for an incredibly frustrating and bothersome couple hours... especially once they die and have to start the whole thing over again from the beginning.

C'mon, Chucklefish, don't give in to such momentum-killing open world mission design. If you need inspiration, look at what Red Faction: Guerilla did with its missions - little playgrounds where your ability to interact with the environment was always key. Don't follow the Ubisoft school of mission design, where missions become a guided tour that allow for zero variation.

Other than the missions I'm quite enjoying the new version. Space travel's neat.

Fuck that first boss

Yeah, I have to admit, I can't get past the boss on the mining station mission. It's a long haul to even get to him, having to be careful and whatnot. And then I get to him and it's practically impossible to deal with the switches, the laser beams, and the pink monsters all at once while attempting to damage the boss. Holy hell. Maybe I just need to grind for better weapons? I don't seem able to make any armor better than steel at this point, and my weapons now are better than what I can craft.

Eh, after trying to beat him for three hours I'm taking a break.

*cough* You can block the lasers. *cough*

BTW, in case people are trying to log on, but can't, Starbound apparently updated just now, so the server is on the new version.

I got the first upgrade available after fixing the ship thrusters.

seems like you can do whatever upgrades you want as soon as you fix the thrusters as long as you have the materials for it. I did every upgrade until it asked me for titanium bars and another metal that escapes me at the moment.

I have a spare Soldier and Grounded. Let me know if you'd like to trade, I'd like the Designer and Wizard.

You can't build in dungeons (not even to place torches) so... no.

Uh, I cheese all of the bosses in the new dungeon because the grenade blast goes through walls.

For example, the 3 floran bosses, I open the door to aggro them, then back out and blow them up while the hug the wall.

And the mech boss has a door mechanic that you can just walk back and close, and you keep going in and shoot and going back out for protection. Really cheesable.

They can easily fix it with an easy change in the level.

Played like at least 30 hours of this game long before the update, and played it about 5 or 6 hours in the past two days.

This game is SO much better when you got friends playing with you. When i'm playing alone, the game feels like a chore. With my friends, we just kinda do the things we're used to doing and it all comes together. Like one of my friends will always be ready to place wooden platforms when we're in caves whenever we need them, my other friend will be the one always placing the torches. I'll be the one cutting and planting trees like crazy, my other friend will manage the farm and build the house. I could not play this on my own for too long. I would never even touch the farming aspect playing alone unless I absolutely had to for whatever reason.

Bows >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> lolguns

I'm playing the game for the first time and I'm a bit lost. Why can't I build armor on the anvil? I'm playing as a novakid and I can only build racial armor. What do I need to build copper or silver armor?

Ugh. The first dungeon is way too hard. That second type of enemy kills you in two hits. All you can do is jump away and cheese them with guns :(

Don't go to the GAF server if you're in windowed mode, the slow down is heavy right there at spawn.

I may have overdone it a little on the Greenhouse, but we have plenty of room for plants now. I need to finish off the main structure above ground and then get the below-ground areas and Hellevator connected. Then I think it'll be time to lay out the rooms (a lot of people have contributed so much furniture already, you guys are great).

I'm gonna have to go the Terraria route in the future, and build out rather than up, and maybe make it a point to put a small base on the starting world with a gate (whenever those get implemented) leading to wherever our main base ends up, just so new players don't spawn into a huge structure with a ton of moving parts.

I also need to stop using Soft Brick on everything. Our base wants to be kind of tech heavy but I keep building everything with those fucking gorgeous, milky-white blocks because they just look so good.

Installed this again after not playing since it first was released. They have made a lot of nice changes.

Found a little platforming base filled with traps where you couldn't destroy anything. Had to get to the end, press a button and rush back to the start to get into a room before it closed again. That was fun and I hope I find more stuff like that.

The double jump tech helps a lot with this. Makes all the encounters with the second type of enemy trivial.

A question about ship upgrades: will workbenches, machines and chests with items that are "placed" in the ship disappear when you upgrade the ship?

I love this game. I only just got the mission to get the crystals to repair my ftl but I'm loving it so far. It's bascially an improved Terraria on a bigger scale. I don't know why but the digging and exploring is the most amazing thing for me. I could dig through the ground for days. Today I was thinking about calling it quits but then I found some weird hi-tech rooms on one of the starting planets and I kept digging for hours. Then I died and beamed right back down and retread my way back to loot some more stuff. I now have a shit ton of oil and lots of ores. I also went to the moon because I just now figured out that I have to deploy for the ftl repair mission, but I went right to the bottom of the moon and picked up tons of the liquid fuel stuff.

Sucks that I won't have a lot of time to play for the next couple of weeks :/

Kinda feel obligated to mention that there is a shortcut in the first boss mission. Hint: It has to do with the dash tech and stairways just too small to fit through. Detail below:

Just after you turn on the first switch and then drop down and you see a dumpster with some dirt and fog lights facing a mound of dirt, there's a gap around, you can get through there by crouching and mashing the left movement button (setting off your dash). This skips you basically to the point of the armoured guys.

Not sure if it's a glitch or not, it looks like it's designed for that based on a similar situation just before the boss, but spoilered it for people who want to work it out for themselves. Have to laugh though because I only found it due to having to redo the mission multiple times because I didn't realize you could block the lasers until after I'd beaten the boss and looked it up. I did the whole boss with trial and error and a dash of luck I think.

Thank you so much for posting that tip, going through the entire dungeon over and over is a chore.

Also, server down? :(

i'm fairly certain that that spot is there for those that return with a much later tech, the
morphball.

so. my game doesn't want to play anymore, getting the Client window is an empty rectangle error
