Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Bosses need checkpoints.

Fuck that NES-level shit. I'm not running the entire level all over again with less items and all the enemies,switches, etc, all back in their place. Give me a checkpoint at the boss please.

The first boss was fun the first two times. Running back to him became a chore which cut down on the fun. He's challenging enough to want to fight him and again, it's a fun boss battle. But after running back five times I finally "/admin"ed to finish the quest.

"Let's explore this radioactive planet with poisonous water, sounds like a good idea"

Get beamed directly into water. -_-

I know the feeling all too well.

"Ohh extreme planet, lets warp in!" - Lands in lava pool

"Ok that planet sucks, lets go to the next one!" - Lands at bandit camp

"Really game? Stop trolling me! Lets try one more..." - Lands with a meteor landing at the landing point.

I think an outright checkpoint before bosses would feel a bit cheap considering the risk/reward system that the game has in place with your home base vs the unknown wilderness, but something like "opening the backdoor to the boss" may be cool, although may clash with the instanced nature of bosses where you are supposed to be able to do the challenge again.

Well, you start with an open world game and then you end in a dungeon that if you fail to complete, you need to start again. Not really fun nor interesting in my opinion.

I would have prefered dungeon in certain planet instead of need to be beamed from your ship.

The mission balance is already busted when you're picking up all of the unique items and such again in your subsequent attempts. Because there's no ammo (aside from throwaway healing items) and no interactivity with the environment, on top of the 100% linear mission design, there's absolutely no reason why the game doesn't have checkpoints in the missions.

It's an excercise in tedium that's completely out of place in a game like this.

Update to game apparently, hit, so server is going to go down for a bit.

NOTE TO PEOPLE WHO WERE JUST ON:
I was TRYING to get on the server to warn you guys, but it looks like Steam wouldn't let me even start Starbound while the game was already in the process of updating.

Holy shit, this game. [...]

Awesome post, man. Really great read. :) A videogame where you can explore many alien world has been my dream ever since the 8-bit micros, and this is probably the closest a game has been to realizing that, especially after disappointments like Spore.

Anyone know where I can find sand for the filler up! quest? Internet says something about a desert biome but my ftl drive is broken and there are no desert planets around

How many planets/moons does your system have? Are you zooming out of your starting planet/moons to check the rest of the planets and their moons around the star? My system has several dozens of planets and moons, and like the fourth I checked was desert type, so it's kind of weird yours would be so sparse.

I recently learned that you can launch starbound.exe directly without Steam running if you need to get in-game when Steam's blocking you (or you're trying various troubleshooting things as I was).

It really does seem odd that you're getting quests you can't actually complete. The only reasons why you'd get quests for materials that aren't even accessible is that you currently can either (or have to ) upgrade your ship, or beat a "boss", then you'll be rewarded with some sort of method to advance to a planet/system where the next set of materials are located.

Can you take a screenshot of the current star system you're in? If you haven't fixed your ship yet, you have to be a in a "GENTLE" star system (you really shouldn't be starting anywhere else).

The current order right now of star system progression is:

GENTLE = harmless, mostly harmless planets
ECCENTRIC = this is where you start seeing radiation, poisonous planets
FREEZING = snow planets
FIERY = volcanic planets

I was trying that, but it looks like the fact that Steam was already in the process of updating/validating the files, and so I couldn't even start it manually.

How many missions are there? I just completed
Mission 4 (The one with the Pinguin Mech)
and got the last armor but there isnt a quest or a mission anymore.

I believe thats the last mission. Have you done the shitty little fetch-quests as well? They provide a different kind of progression.

Applied update to my server, should be restarted now.

One thing I am wondering about -- I wish there was a way to configure multiple starting planets. I've noticed everyone playing on mine spawns on the same one.

Yes.

Seems like its exploration time now eh? I hope there wont be a wipe now or else i will be disappointed if i get all those cool items.

All the quests aren't in yet, but that should be the last main one at the moment, I think.

you know what really grinds my gears?

when someone visits a planet loots all the surface chest, and leaves them there, with no sign at spawn that the place has been explored.

seeing a surface tech chest being empty is the sadness

Terrible. The galaxy map really needs annotations or markers something so that players can keep straight which planet is which. I lost my mega-fortress planet because I didn't set it as home after building there, while also searching for my original starting planet with all my crafting stuff. (Before you ask, I lost the home bookmark when I accidentally used it on a gate planet.)

Completely unrelated question: if you dig a straight hole from the spawn location on a planet down to the lava core, does the planet's spawn location stay or change? What I mean is, would it make the planet unaccessable for the rest of the game?

How to beat that 4th boss?
He one shots me even in rubinium armor, in that green one I can survive about 3-4 shots :/

I'm playing the game for the first time and I'm a bit lost. Why can't I build armor on the anvil? I'm playing as a novakid and I can only build racial armor. What do I need to build copper or silver armor?

Do I need to find blueprints before building any non-racial armor?

I seem to recall Starbound even being the first game I ever noticed that would let me opt out of updates, and/or play instead of updating. I don't think you could ever play WHILE updating, but I wish the option was still there to opt out.

Did a bit of "extreme" exploring last night. Sucked back the medkits to swim to the bottom of a poison planet. Ended up exploring under the crust for like an hour! Lots of little dungeons and an awesome bone/flesh/gore biome I'd never seen before.

Have my MM maxed out now, feels SO good being able to mine at crazy fast rate - pretty much make my own tunnels everywhere now :)

That's it! Can't really think of anything else that's ever made the grade like Starbound has. No Man's Sky look promising, but Starbound is just so great for exploring.

The Penguin Mech?

I geared for energy, with a really good ranged rifle (EDIT: to add, can't remember the name, but it was a rapid fire assault rifle with rebounding bullets), so I could sustain damage. Of course that meant his Charge was a one-hit kill (even with max gear). So it took me about 6-7 tries before I got the cycle down and managed to jump all of those Charges. Take loads of medpacks, suck 'em down like they're Coca Cola. Some people recommended stim packs, but I found hotkey swapping/cycling - just didn't seem to have enough benefit and I lost too much time not doing damage while cycling them.

Also make sure you have double-jump and the side-step (can't remember it's proper name at the minute) equipped. Both got me out of trouble on more than a few occasions. Bear in mind too, that provided you have enough energy, you can spam the side-step as many times as you like, keeping you in the air indefinitely (also good when he's about to Charge, or if you double-jump too early and you doubt your timing).

I found thevstim cycling to work. They really helped

I have rocket assisted jump and dash. A good shield my sister gave me with 235 protection. But I kept wacking him at close range with a hammer

I think you've got the star types slightly incorrect there Haryu. Reasonably sure Eccentric is where you start hitting no atmosphere planets isn't it?
I got the following for star types:

Gentle = basic planets
Eccentric = No Atmosphere
Radioactive = radiation
Freezing = snow planets
Fiery = volcanic

Kind of find it interesting that they changed to only really having 5 tiers of planets, but really enjoying having a more robust tiering system instead of just more health/damage on the mobs.

That's frustrating, I was using lab lockers in my ship because they stack nicely. My main question now is what happens to stuff that was in the removed slots in the storage? Does it just disappear?
When walking around my ship after a previous update, I noticed I picked up some random crap. Now I figure that's because storage I was using was downgraded. Also when I noticed that the big chests are actually big. Hopefully that's what will happen again instead of stuff disappearing.

yes, items are dropped.

i reeally hope whoever gets on the server after updating picks up the loose items and places them in new spots

I decided to set a base on an ocean planet, while exploring the seafloor I had the idea to start digging down and for my surprise I landed on a series of cave with lot's of titanium and gold ores.

Just got home, assuming the new patch is the reason no one is on.

Server being updated as I type, will post when it's up.

UPDATE: Server is now up.

3D printing a ship locker for 1 pixel? Seems legit.

Edit: Guess that's the power of the /admin command. Lunar base lockers are now appropriately beefy on the space. Storage in the server home base is mostly fine. Some blocks were stashed in a locker, and that's all I saw that popped out to the ground. Crates below crafting area are the same size as before.

Just been having a poke and prod on the GAF server! Love the farm at spawn. Wow. Going to have to do something like that on my home world.

I pinched a few seeds I didn't have (replanted those that needed replanting!) and I popped down a couple I couldn't see you all had, the Toxictop and Bananas. Couldn't see you had Carrots either but unfortunately I didn't have seeds on me or my ship for them so I'll pop them in next time I find some.

So much stuff in this game to collect!

Place-able Teleporters are going to be in the next major feature.
http://www.reddit.com/r/starbound/comments/2umvl1/the_next_major_feature_is_placeable_teleporters/
So to make planet side building more rewarding we're beginning work on teleporters you can place in the world that enable you to teleport to any other placed teleporter on the same network.
These teleporters will span planets and player ships as well as quickly lead you to the outpost. Meaning you'll no longer need to fly back to a planet to access it's chests and stored items.
We hope it'll make building large planet side structures more rewarding and is the first of many changes to facilitate that.
This feature will come in its own update.
Just thought you'd like to know!

dibs on frozen world. i found one with 3 glitch houses

but nah. pick a world per difficulty and set them up in the mines

Is there a feature in the game where I can just store coordinates for planets i've already been to return to later?

There isn't anything in game. I just use a google spreadsheet on my Galaxy tablet to jot down planet's and systems. Works well.

I'd love if they integrated a "bookmarks" system for planets, but I'm doing the same as others, just have a Google Sheet on my phone/tablet that I have a list of notable planets in.
