Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

i'm fairly certain that that spot is there for those that return with a much later tech, the
morphball.

I had a theory like that myself, but then I wondered why I'd ever want to go back there... Unless there's a later quest for that place? Anyway, that's why I mentioned that it might be a glitch.

there is a secret item in a similar spot

Why there are a lot of complaints on forums about the first boss being too hard? I thought he was very straight forward.

Kinda feel obligated to mention that there is a shortcut in the first boss mission. Hint: It has to do with the dash tech and stairways just too small to fit through. Detail below:

Just after you turn on the first switch and then drop down and you see a dumpster with some dirt and fog lights facing a mound of dirt, there's a gap around, you can get through there by crouching and mashing the left movement button (setting off your dash). This skips you basically to the point of the armoured guys.

Not sure if it's a glitch or not, it looks like it's designed for that based on a similar situation just before the boss, but spoilered it for people who want to work it out for themselves. Have to laugh though because I only found it due to having to redo the mission multiple times because I didn't realize you could block the lasers until after I'd beaten the boss and looked it up. I did the whole boss with trial and error and a dash of luck I think.

I accidentally discovered it because I got stuck

Holy shit, this game.

Must have put about 12-15 hours in over the weekend.

Planets with eyes for ground cover, planets with giant rose bushes for trees, secret underground gnome villages, planets covered in bones and skeletons. Exploring the bottoms of oceans, the deep space of asteroid fields, attempting to survive a monumentally cold planet surface - for all of 15 seconds - before teleporting back up to the ship in utter defeat, vowing to come back later. Coming back later and mining the shit out of that place for Rubium, Aegisalt and Violium.

There's a special sort of feeling that Starbound manages to capture. It's that childhood dream that I had, to become a space explorer. Only if I wasn't born thousands of years too early. To imagine what worlds would be like on the other side of the galaxy, on the other side of the universe.

As I began cracking into the ridiculously solid Obsidian surface of a Volcanic planet orbiting stupid close to its Fiery star last night, I had time to ponder all of those things; Like what would I have done with myself if I was born into such an open, free universe? Would I be in some crazy techno-nano-heat suit with my spaceship orbiting a hundred kilometres up, digging into the surface of some uncharted world looking for "Solarium Ore"? Or would I be at home, some planet a thousand light years away, sitting on some futuristic VR computer system, playing the MMO or Sim of the day and bitching about the million dollar paid DLC packs before I can even start the game?

I'm rambling - tl;dr, had a shit load of fun exploring weird and wonderful worlds in Starbound on the weekend. Hope we're all having fun.

So yeah posting the game-crashing planet I found:

Cords: X -5602524281 Y-994204637
Planet: Beta Algol Minoris VI

Do you get to character select, or does it crash when clicking single player on the menu?

after selecting my character....

please don't say what i think you are going to

*edit* restoring to a backed up character the game thankfully makes

fingers crossed

*(edit2* failure

I can honestly say a big "Thank you" to Chucklefish and Starbound. You have taught me a valuable lesson. Don't order shit until it's finished.

But then......after 2014, several games taught me to not order AAA games for at least 3 months until after release.

Can you at least make a new character and not have it crash?

Thank you so much for posting that tip, going through the entire dungeon over and over is a chore.

It might be a chore, but on the half dozen or more trips I took through it trying to beat the boss I gathered some real nice loot too, so it wasn't too wasted. Nice loot for a low character starting out anyway. Plus a bunch of crafting recipes.

i was zipping around the outpost with the flash step, then the world disapeared

*tried another backup fro earlier today, no dice.

Man that blows :(

Perfect time to complain when the game just got a huge update.

it has come to my attntion that others have had their character corrupted by the Teleport Blink

basically...don't use it

I put the more earthly plants on the right. Far right are crops you don't have to replant after harvesting. Right side you have to replant.
Opposite with the alien plants. Far left are self-replenishing. Left requires replanting. Not sure if Retro planned it out this way, but it works out. Probably missing a few seeds.

Retro posted about it earlier, but yeah, severe lag if you pop into spawn on GAF planet on the server.

Its just THAT area though, if you move away from it, the lag will disappear. There's just waaaay too much stuff in that one little area.

But yeah, Retro can be a little insane with his builds. :p

Just wanted to say that Retro is an amazing builder.

Thanks. I'm always doodling stuff on bits of paper so I tend to have lots of little ideas floating around when I go to build. I'm thinking my next big project will be revisiting a build I had from the last stable update (seen here), the idea I had is that Florans found a ruined Glitch tower and retrofitted it into a giant "Stone tree").

Not sure if Retro planned it out this way, but it works out. Probably missing a few seeds.

I went for pure asthetics, but I'm glad it worked out. Really, it was all about making space. I haven't found all of the plant types yet but if we need more space I can expand out a little.

I take that as a compliment, just so you know.

I promise the next time we need to restart, I'll build the crazy stuff out and away from spawn a little. I like the idea of having players start in a little base with basic supplies and then moving somehow to a much larger structure. They mentioned in a Reddit AMA that planet-based warp gates are on the list of things to do, maybe that's the solution.

Man, I'm having a blast with this build of Starbound. I beamed down to a snow planet and was immediately surprised by a night time snowy world with mountains in the distance lit up by an aurora borealis and glowing plants.

I may just make this my home planet, it's so serene and beautiful!!!!

Oh, that is wonderful!

I'm still trying to find a really nice planet to set up shop. Thankfully got my ship upgraded a bit now so it's large enough for a heap of Chests for my findings, but I'll set up camp somewhere eventually.

I'm enjoying this game MUCH more now after this update. I played for about ~10 hours a while back and found it pretty dull but I'm having a lot of fun with it now.

Anyone know where I can find sand for the filler up! quest? Internet says something about a desert biome but my ftl drive is broken and there are no desert planets around

no arid or ocean either? i guess that is very unfortunate. you could always hop on the server. we have deserts galore

and also sand in the Home Base storage

I have been thinking about this, but what happens with single player progress if you join multi? Will the planets that I have visited be reset? I assume that you get to keep items collected in multi, but what about quests that you finished?

The server hosts the universe. So whatever you've done on your own in worlds is saved on your PC. Anything player-related, including your inventory, ship, and your quest progress, can carry over back and forth between single player and multi.

Huh, looks like they fucked me like that last seahawks play. Is there an ocean on forest planets? They gave me 3 of those and a moon lol

Like, should I just walk to the right or left for a long time?

ocean is its own planet class.

i still find it hard to believe you got no desert

arid planets also work if you can

is the gaf server even fun

Depends on your definition of "fun".
Actually, and this pretty much applies to any server in Starbound, it pretty much is dependent on who else is on the server at the time.
To me, the GAF server pretty much serves the following purposes:

1) Primarily a place to build and show off what you can do to other GAF members. (Retro falls into this category)

2) Just mess around and socialize. (Most of the other players)

3) Get help with a mission/boss. (Amazingly, doesn't happen that often)

4) Item trade/gifting. (Also amazingly, doesn't happen that often)
So... yeah, your mileage may vary.

Eh I feel like I wouldn't want to join it until I get my endgame character then.

So...

someone left an accordion in one of the storage crates at Home. it is currently safe and sound in my ship. and will be returned whn the owner is identified.

unless they left it there for someone to take, in which case, thanks.

5) Forming hella-sweet bands.

I suppose this falls under 2 though

Thanks. To clarify, when reloading single, I am at the exact location where I left things off in single (with inventory, ship items, and quest progress updated based on what I did in multi)?

Correct. What planet you're in orbit over is also saved on your PC or on the server, so those are separately persistent, along with your chosen home planet. So you can have a different home planet while on a server without it screwing up your home planet for single player.

In case anyone was wondering, server taken down a little bit for maintenance. Should be back up now.

And for future reference, 6-8am EST is when the server will usually be down maintenance (if I think its needed and not an emergency)
