2K has given two middle fingers to Evolve's digital early adopters

JaseC

gave away the keys to the kingdom.
Basically, Evolve became pre-purchaseable on Steam and other digital vendors late October, yet despite the semi-recent announcement of the Digital Deluxe and cringe-worthy PC Monster Race editions, there are no upgrade options for early birds. I suspect 2K pretending that the game wasn't pre-purchaseable until recently has everything to do with the fact that its own stuff-up saw the game available for $5 on Steam ID (the Indonesian Steam store), however, even assuming this to be the case, it's completely ridiculous that everybody many people who had the audacity to hand over their money early are being penalised because of a mistake that 2K was entirely responsible for.

I'd wager that many will consider this a non-issue considering the controversy surrounding the segmentation of content, however I think we can all agree that not giving a price-appropriate option for early adopters is scummy behaviour.

Edit: Just to make this abundantly clear: No, I didn't make this thread for my own sake as some have presumed. I've no intention of actually playing the game and the PCMRE isn't going anywhere, so if need be I'll just pick it up on sale.

Can you not cancel and then repurchase for the special editions?

Yes, but this isn't an option for those who received the game as a gift, either through Steam directly or elsewhere. Situations like this aren't unprecedented: when Sega announced the Alien Isolation DDE, it offered an upgrade an option, and WB did the same with Modor. 2K is just, for some bizarre reason, hoping people won't notice.

2K gonna 2K ....

I really wish they'd let us upgrade to either one of those editions .... who knows - maybe they'll do that after it comes out?

Hasn't the lead up to this game been pretty much a disaster since day 1?
That's the impression I get from the threads for it.

Well, that's the problem when devs talk more about DLC than the game.
Game went from day one to 5€ steam sale for me.

I'm still trying to convince myself that the pre-order will be worth it, i'm also failing miserably.

Only 9 more days.

Not wanting to sound unsympathetic but it sounds like you got the $5 gifted version and now want to upgrade but pay the minimum amount,

You Could probably buy the season pass and still come out ahead.

Steam and 2K should offer everyone an upgrade based on the price you paid for the original purchase to keep things fair

that's why I never pre-order any game until a day (or even a few hours) before release...you get the same pre-order bonuses whether you order 2 months early or 2 hours from release

I can't believe that people are still willing to preorder after all the DLC shit they've been pulling with this game.

Who in their right mind would pre-order this game after terrible pre-release press it has gotten?

Maybe next time, those who got screwed over will think twice about pre-ordering. Or not, probably not. they get no sympathy from me, either way.

Oh and I agree that this game has $5 steam sale written all over it as the volume of day one dlc makes it feel incomplete before we have even begun.

It's almost FTP without the free beginning

Were you gifted the $5 pricing error version on Steam then? I think any time you take advantage of a situation like that you have to be ready to accept the rough with the smooth.

This is a fun game. But why on earth someone would pay $70 for it is beyond me (here in Canada). I'm waiting for deep discounts before I jump aboard

I did snag the game for $5, but I don't particularly care about the lack of upgrade options, personally -- what's important is that I'll get the pre-order bonus. There is more to the editions than just the "Hunting Pass", though, which is why upgrade packages are needed for those who want to move up a tier or two.

I'm pretty sure an upgrade path does exist. I preordered it a few weeks ago for the beta stuff (canceled as soon as beta was over), and i recall seeing options on the store page for upgrades.

Of Course you should get the preorder bonuses as you did preorder regardless of price

People can buy the DDE/PC Monster Race editions even if they own the base game, but there no packages that offer their content minus the game itself, which is the issue.

They already gave the middle finger to everyone with their dumb dlc and extra content pricing. This will go in the way of Titanfall, in 6 month no one will be playing it.

Thanks for the video.

I liked the reveal video at E3, however I didn't know about the whole DLC drama, my interest went from "I'll check reviews out" to "never". This has got to be the game that better shows what's wrong with DLC/preorders and this damn industrty.
Prepare for the fans of the game to come running to its defense. Their number one defense: you don't need to buy the dlc and the maps will be free.

but it's true...you don't need to buy the DLC...just buy the base game and if you like it enough then later on you can buy the DLC separately...players will also be able to play against the new Monsters/Hunters even if you don't buy the DLC

Seems like the #1 defense right now is: "Some bought the game for $5 during a price error, so you all deserve to be collectively punished and forced to buy the game a second time for the other editions!"
Hilarious

To be fair, they guaranteed a lot of free maps as well as free dlc packs and you only get to pay for skins and whatnot. They did specify that they don't want to split the community afterall.

The problem is the way its presented and in your-face kind of aggressive promotion for their different editions.

The [artificial?] hype during last E3 was pretty obnoxious.

I do not this it was artificial at all, but a victim of how games are demoed for the media. Can you put everything great about Xcom or Dragon Age into a 15 minute demo? No, but with Evolve you can. It can show really well on a first impression and that is why E3 hype was so much more media centric (Titan Fall was the exact same way). The beta was their chance to give that good impression to fans and I think the DLC stuff is undoing at least some of that.

Ahh, ok then. I did not know about this, when and how was it?!

Ahhh, the old "Will give free stuff but first buy over priced stuff first" argument. Considering they knew one year in advance what they were going to sell, I find is a bit suspicious that they are not willing to say when and how they are going to give away these free stuff...I particularly like how you said a lot of free maps when no details of the plan for free maps has been released yet but hey, I love your optimism! Do you really think 2K will let them give away free maps if the sales are not satisfactory for them?

Yeah 15 dollar for a monster and 7.5 for each additional hunter? no thanks.

That's the impression i got too. When it was revealed, there was hype. But it pretty much died down. Was suprised when i saw it in the February releases thread. They are lucky that February is rather empty except maybe the order.
Beta impressions didn't help either.

Wow, I did not expect this kind of tone from my little comment.

They specify actually what are things that are going to be. Maps, which are the crux of this game. Not the Skins, not the character look and not the monsters (although having different monster with different abilities do change some bits, but nevertheless, they aren't required)

Also, your anger should be directed towards the industry and not this game, the ''cost'' you keep complaining about is standard cost of the base game + the season pass which includes every skins and monster. In fact this game clearly identifies what are things you are getting with each DLC and its not as shady as you may make it out to be.

Your idea of this game seem to be based more on the general rage of this forum rather you looking at it more objectively.

Ahh, ok then. I did not know about this, when and how was it?!

It was back when the game became pre-purchaseable on Steam. The mistake didn't last long (a few hours or so), although as you would expect, many people stocked up.

The tone in this thread.... Pure hate.

I don't get why people consider this DLC model to be the worst. It's easily one of the better ones out there.
Does not split the community with paid maps like Titanfall, Cod, BF etc.

Yes they said maps, but I think they should when and how many, at least for the first year. They are constantly releasing info for the Behemoth monster, why cant they release something for the maps?
The cost I am complaining about, is having to pay 15 bucks for one extra monster, 15 freaking bucks. Yes DLC`s are annoying and some publishers are going insane with them, but this has to be the worst I have seen yet. I mean 15 bucks can get you a whole DLC pack for one game! No one said anything about them being shady, it is just that the pricing for the game plus extra content seems too high.
My idea of the game came from when I learned that the game coming close to release and it being something I was interested in, playing the Beta. Then finding out that if I buy the game one day after release I have to pay 15 for behemoth. That is my idea of the game.

It is the pricing, pure and simple.

Again, the season pass is 20 and it will net you the monster you desire and more. I really don't understand Why you keep harping on 15 when you can get more for another 5, and also you don't need it to enjoy the game
They aren't gonna announce the maps for obvious reasons. They have to ship the actual game and doing a skin or two is easier to make and hence is announced. Again maps will be free, sooner or later. You still have the base game.

Playing the Beta does not exclude from having a bias. The fact that you are just arguing about the price just strengthens that the fact that you are riding a hate fest. How can a single Monster hampers an enjoyment of a whole game?

This ^

I must admit it, I was on the hate train too. But then I played the beta and had so much fun....

The only thing that is kinda shitty for my friends and me is the "preorder for free monstaaa" stuff :D

I think I paid the right price for the game during the pricing error, and I have a feeling that all the DLC in the special edition packs will be seriously discounted before too long. Evolve might be another Titanfall situation, where the PC market just doesn't care.

Titanfall split the userbase with paid maps. Maybe that is why the market wasn't too hot on it.
