Super Bowl XLIX |OT| The Butler Did It

Don't think I've ever seen a Super Bowl thread this heated on GAF. Any team could've won and it had to be a bone headed play that cost us the championship, but C'est la Vie. I'm sure Beast Mode will always think what if, but it wasn't his call to make. Hope Brady doesn't retire, as I'm sure if they meet up again, the Seahawks will have his number. Now bring on the off-season

Brady wants to play until he's 40, at least. And he's taking pay cuts to bring in additional talent/keep talent.

You're seeing it in a still photo, the click and close on that play was textbook, few break that up. You're right, he was in position, but week after week DBs are in position but don't close on it in time.

The real crime in that photo is that Hawks were scared off by one additional lineman in the run game. I man spread it out, option that backside and try to even up the numbers.

Listen you have 40 seconds, 1 time out, and the best power back in football. One additional DL is going to scare you off? Like I said, spread and shred. Keep backside honest like they always do with the threat of read run, even up the numbers. If it fails. Call timeout and regroup.

The worst that should happen on that play is you get stopped. You still have time to run the ball. And you can still pass. They had all the options in the world open and they took a chance on 2nd and goal. I was confused by Belichick not calling a timeout. These weird things always happen when I criticize time management.

It's a TD if Wilson and the WR execute a bit better. At the worst it's incomplete. No need to lead the WR there, throw it to him

Yeah, it was your basic goal line pick play.. Russell just threw it in front of Lockette and Butler came around and made a great play.

Honestly, on paper.. it's a very safe play. Just Russell threw it too far in front and Butler just came around and made the play.

Wilson choked on nuts until the last few min of the GB game. Seahawks got real lucky with that win. They should've won this game, but played sloppy when it counted the most.

Convinced Wilson had a concussion in that game after the mathews hit...took until the 4th to really come around

The call doesn't look that out of place. I'm sure the pats saw something and expected them to throw the football in that play which enabled Butler to anticipate the offense for the interception.

A player did a great play, the seahawks exposed themselves to this by throwing the football, but nobody would be talking about it if Butler doesn't make an awesome play.

MMQB at is best.

Keep backside honest like they always do with the threat of read run, even up the numbers. If it fails. Call timeout and regroup. Don't always need a fullback to run, it's one fucking yard. How many times has Brady just powered it on a sneak from the one. One lousy yard, with no FB to bring extra defender into box which a positive in my book. 4 defenders have to account at a minimum for three receivers, so that puts you at 7 defenders vs 6 blockers, then you have read/run and you even it up 7 to account for 7. I'm making it sound easy, but at the end of the day, try it and regroup if it fails.

Play was hurried, they flipped formation with about 12 seconds on the playclock and snapped with 8.

So much hate for Wilson sheesh. The guy is amazingly fun to watch. People hate him because he doesn't have the arm of some of the bigger QB's so does not throw like them?

That makes no sense.

As a Broncos fan, I can only congratulate the Pats for their consistency year in and year out.

Must be nice to cheer for a competitive QB that actually wants to win, rather than a me-first old man who can't run or throw, but can sure as hell suck-up 19 million a year plus whatever else he's hauling in from Papa Johns and Nationwide.

You are a drunk dumb psuedo-Broncos fan.

Plot twist. What if Carroll called a pass to prevent Lynch from scoring and winning the MVP because he wanted to protect Lynch from the anxiety he gets from doing interviews???

he actually has a better arm then allot of the bigger QBs and throws one of the best deep balls in the league.

Peyton Manning played with a torn quad and got his Broncos to the SB last year with a defense that had no pro bowlers playing on that side of the ball. I have a feeling he will be back in the SB next year.

Safe play in a tie game. Needing the score, you gotta ride Lynch till 4th down I think

Maybe on 4th down mix it up, but I'd think you gotta give Lynch 2 cracks at it. He was born for this situation.

I can't believe how mad I am, if the Chargers ever get to the SB and blow it I might have a stroke.

I have been watching football for decades now and I say this without hyperbole, the call by Bevell will go down as the single worst by a coordinator in the history of the NFL, especially when you consider what was at stake (a Championship) and how it would've cemented Seattle's NFL legacy (beating both Manning and Brady back-to-back).

I have never seen a single football play that has left me utterly speechless.

I don't hate him, I'm just sick of how he's pretty much been anointed as the next great QB even though he's really just OK and benefits from playing with the best defense and one of the best running games in the league.

Thats true, but it is NOT NEARLY as safe as just running it in to the end zone.

Especially, if you only have to go less than a yard.

I would bet it is safer and much more effective. I have seen a lot of fumbles and goal line stands on the goal line, don't think I have ever seen an int on that pick play. Teams run it a lot now because it is so effective. Manning probably threw 30 of his TDs in that record setting year on that play.

Well the dude has made it to two Super Bowls while his class of QBs have not. Surely he played a hand in it.

The guy isn't even a friggin Quarterback.

Hes like a friggin running back who just passes to himself.

Sure, he makes some great passes every now and then, but he is FAR better known for running the ball rather than throwing it, which is NOT what a QB is supposed to do.

I'm not a big Tom Brady fan, but he is a REAL Quarterback, unlike Wilson.

He's a decent QB, but not a great one. There's been way too much hype around him. Seahawks offense is not based on needing a spectacular QB. Just a competent one.

Basically, Wilson is the second coming of Kyle Orton. The most adequate man in football.

Lost in the shuffle, the WR at the bottom of the screen is already blocking. Should have been called a PI but no flag. Lucky it ended the way it did. The Pats were called for a PI earlier in the game in a very similar scenario.

I still can't believe the ending. What an amazing sequence.

Was he blocking or was that an attempted jam?

Wilson is an amazing QB, but I question what happens when he gets older and loses his speed and mobility, which is what makes him an amazing QB.

Dude has only been in the league for 3 years, he has an amazing future ahead of him.

Ask what's going to happen when he loses the threat that Lynch provides.
