Darkest Dungeon | “The Road” of dungeon crawlers, on Kickstarter, GAFfer-made

That is one of the best narrators I've heard in a game.

Fuck yeah it is. He has a fantastic voice, puts meaningful into the right syllables and even throws in a few pregnant pauses to great effect.

"Mortality defined in a single strike!"

Something cool I've noticed as I've been upgrading the buildings is that the town gets less shabby the more you upgrade. That's definitely a nice touch. Every upgrade is meaningful to and reduces the difficulty of the game to a more acceptable level.

Hot tip to everyone just getting in to the game with the next wave of early access on the 3rd: I highly recommend doing the first skirmishes in the Ruins until the Weald dungeon gets unlocked and then hitting those Rank 1 skirmishes and exploration hard in the Weald. The Weald has a much higher drop rate (and rewards) for Deeds, and you need Deeds to upgrade your Blacksmith. The better upgraded the Blacksmith the better you can upgrade your weapons and armor on your characters which means they can dish out more damage and take a beating better. From what I can tell, the jump from a Rank 1 to a Rank 3 dungeon is a huge jump and your beginning weapons and armor (even the first upgrades) will not cut it. I finally managed to do a Rank 3 dungeon with Rank 3 veterans all using a variety of Rank 2 and Rank 3 gear and it was tough.

Might want to look that one up or alternately damn you autocorrect!

I've been watching streams of this thinking this experience could translate quite well to portable and just found out it's coming to Vita. I'm ridiculously excited.

The KS had a tier with an exclusive class....anyone know what that class is and if it exists?
I think it't the merchant. I don't think it's in yet, there are several classes missing.

In:
  • Crusader
  • Hightwayman
  • Plague Doctor
  • Bounty Hunter
  • Vestal
  • Occultist
  • Helion
  • Leper
  • Grave Robber

Coming:
  • Man-At-Arms
  • Houndmaster
  • Arbalest
  • Lord Tier Hero
  • Merchant (49$ backer+ only)

That is one of the best narrators I've heard in a game.
Yes, he is amazing. Makes me again regret that Long Live the Queen doesn't have the narrator from the trailer. More games needs a translator like Darkest Dungeon.

The developers heard the narrator, Wayne June, doing HP Lovecraft and then hired him: https://soundcloud.com/wayne1/kubla-khan-by-samuel-taylor

I checked back in with Bourassa on one more point, however: Darkest Dungeon's narration. Not since Bastion had a narrator made such an impression on me, and Bourassa tells me that it's Wayne June that I can thank for that grumbling bass. It was June's reading of H. P. Lovecraft's work that made him the obvious choice. I hadn't heard any of those readings, but I am glad Bourassa pointed them out to me: June's vocal gravity forces you to listen to every word. (I have embedded below June's rendition of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's "Kubla Khan" for your listening pleasure.)

Says Bourassa of Wayne's contribution, "He brings a brilliantly articulated, classically overwrought delivery that really nails the Gothic flavour, without descending into campiness. All of the trailers and spoken dialogue were written specifically for him--his unique cadence, tenor and tone perfectly matches the contemplative mood and pace of the game." And just as with Bastion, the bulk of the game's narrative is routed through the narrator's voice, a choice that Bourassa calls "a fun storytelling challenge." It helps that June's voice lends such a melancholy and mysterious flair to a game that evokes so much fear and loneliness.

Developers admitted to the class tied behind a paid tier a mistake, think they changed it to a variant of an existing class.

Especially since even though it was funded the advertising sucked and most people found out after the KS was done. Like me.

I made enough card money to make this purchase softer on my wallet. Not that twenty is much to most people.

Feels good man.

They should ask the backers if they would have sonething against thrm putting the class as paid dlc and refund to those who don't accept that or something like that. I doubt that many people would have something against that as long as they keep an edge.

Did 3 runs throught first dungeon rank 1 quest and now I don't have 4 "sane" dudes to send in a new quest. This is where the game gets "fun" I guess lol.

I haven't followed Darkest Dungeon closely but definetly looking forward to getting the Early Access tomorrow. Have they said anything about implementing mod support sometime further down the line? Since they were close to reaching that goal during their Kickstarter I mean.

You can always discard wrecks and hire new ones from the cart if needed. At this point of the game it shouldn't really hurt. Also: get a Jester. He is wonderful in keeping your mentalbhealth at bay. Another option: Get Pest Doctor and Bounty Hunter for stun locks.

I think they were actually quite a bit from this goal and I didn't hear any mention of it so far. Well, it's better to finish the core game first, maybe we can ask for it when they released the full game.

Honestly it is just another class not some op thing. If I found out about the Kickstart I would have backed. Sadly it wasn't advertised much or well.

Even more pointless if mod support gets added in.

I would be more annoyed if that tier granted a psn copy as well to the pc version.

On the one hand, rogue-alike :(

On the other hand, rogue-alike :)

RNG will RNG.
RNGsus fortunes come through to those who persevere!

No Jester found yet! I was seriously debatting just throwing away the one character with high stress and keeping the three others since they are at 3/4 boxes of stress for the moment.

Seeing how the game is in beta and that we're probably going to get save wipes before the end I'm willing to experiment.

I don't care as much either, but some people really have issues with not being able to get everything and give the poor devs shit for it.

Just do it, level 0 and 1 heroes are easily replaced. You can put them on suicide missions to get as much loot as possible and then discard the broken ones.

Well, "close" in a relative term, 37K.

Still, after Early Access sales I personally hope that they would consider working on mod support after the release of the game with the additional funding.

Game looks amazing but roguelike + turn based = no thanks

What? Roguelikes are inherently turn-based, because... you know... Rogue was turn based and they are games like... Rogue.

I don't know if this is a testament to great and effective game design but I legit feel stressed after a while of playing. Great stuff. The RNG has made me go thru some lucky and some not so lucky moments.

Watched a few streams over the week-end and it's definitely shaping up to be as awesome as I thought :p

That being said, i'll wait for the full release, too much stuff to play in the coming weeks, and i'll most likely burn myself on it by playing it too much before the 'full' release xD

Game looks awesome, I really want to try it out. How finished is the early access version be?
It feels very finished. It lacks the two last dungeons, including the Darkest Dungeon, so yiu can actually finish the game afaik, but the gameplay core works perfectly. It actually feels like a finished game. I think it even has less bugs than the average finished game.

I'll be following this if it comes to Early Access. I hope it does well enough so I could get this on Steam and my Vita if they do a port.

I dislike the feature when a level 3 character don't want anymore to go do low level quests.
I didn't had any problems in other dunjeons crawlers games with high level characters doing low level dunjeons.
I don't like to be forced to start a new team from scrath because of that.

He is so damn right, I love the narrator.
He speak well and for none english speaker, I understand every word he is saying because he articulate well.

That guy deserve an award. He help so much to get into the mood of the game.

Thats sounds good. Can you talk about what makes this a rouge lite game? Because Im always easy of Early Acess games that are inspired by rouge like games. You know, because its a lot of repetion anyways

Death is final. The game autodaves after every action. If one hero dies, he is dead. And this can happen easily due bad planning or too much risk of the player. The mental health is really a gamechanger here. Sometimes the darkness is a mpre dangerous foe than any monster.

The Afflictions aren't as bad as I thought they were. They can be really annoying, make the game more challenging, and can fuck you up at one bad instant, but they're not game ending or run ending. Their worst part, in my opinion, is that every round an Afflicted party member will freak out and cause the others higher stress which in turn will get them Afflicted if their stress hits 100. The really cool part of hitting 100 stress is that it's actually not guaranteed that you get a bad/dark Affliction. Much like the quirks there are actually good/light Afflictions to have. One of my Vestals hit 100 stress and got a Light Affliction called "Focus" which made her say supportive things on her turn which actually reduced stress on my party members and gave out buffs.

It actually feels like a finished game. I think it even has less bugs than the average finished game.

Darkest Dungeon certainly has a lot of polish for being Early Access. All of the mechanics are in place and I've already put in 9 hours into the game and have only gone through a part of two dungeons. I have encountered several bugs though such as:

1. Some skills on upgrading don't actually upgrade. This happened twice, once with the party heal with a Vestal that went from Rank 1 (1-2 hp) to Rank 2 (still 1-2 HP). After shutting down the game and restarting it, it properly gave out 2-2 HP restores at Rank 2. I also had one of my Crusader's melee skills not gain any accuracy on a rank up until after restarting the game.

2. Upgrading Armor didn't update the stat sheet immediately for me. I don't know for sure if the upgrades carried through into a dungeon, because I noticed the bug immediately and tried a work around I thought of. That work around was just placing an accessory on a party member and it actually corrected the stat sheet, and I could take that accessory off and the numbers will stay.

3. My beefiest Bounty Hunter, for some reason, had a penalty to speed and damage output even though he had a single Dark quirk (that didn't affect speed or damage) and wasn't using any accessories. I upgraded his weapon to Rank 3 which corrected the speed and damage output to the correct values.

4. I've had some weird instances where code will just appear out of nowhere in the game. After I got done a run in the Ruins and it took me to the Activity log, there was a string of code within a paragraph. Also, when I shut down the game one time, a block of code popped up before shutting the game down.

Nothing too harmful to the gameplay experience and with some work arounds, but they are there.

Every play Rogue Legacy? Darkest Dungeon has a few similarities. Here's a few things that make the game rogue-lite:

1. Permanent character death. If a party member is knocked down to 0 HP, they're put in a state called "Death's Door" which reduces their stats and the next blow from an enemy could permanently kill them. If you get a heal off in time on a character they will be moved out of the Death's Door state and have their stats fixed.

You can always get more characters out of the Caravan Wagon to replace those who have died or don't fit your play style. So there is no "well your entire party is dead, restart the entire game over".

2. Much in Rogue Legacy, you're given a village to build up. As you make runs through the dungeons you'll find heirlooms (Busts, Portraits, Deeds, Crests) that are used in upgrading your village. The more you upgrade, the better off you can restore mental states of character's, remove afflictions and dark quirks, upgrade weapons/armor, buy rare accessories, get more party members, and upgrade their skills. You'll always have some kind of progression, and even if a party member dies you can quickly gear up a new party member if your Guild (skills acquisition) and Blacksmith (weapon/armor upgrades) are upgraded.

3. All of the dungeon layouts are randomized - loot, monster locations, what traps and stumbling blocks each dungeon has will always be different.

4. Always inherent to rogue games, this game is very difficult and very challenging. The game even has a warning when you get into the game that at every possible moment you can instantly be fucked and that the entire game is "making a best possible outcome of a bad situation".

I backed this with $15 on KS - does this not let me get the early access version when it launches tomorrow? I'm okay with it though, would just like to know.

1. They upgrade, the text is just wrong. Like Vestals party heal goes from 1-2 to 2-2 at one point, but the text in the guild says 1-2

2. and 3. Didn't encounter that yet, interesting.

4. Yes. Especially Plague Doctor when they get or cure traits in passages it shows the string rather than the actual words.

At least they fixed the campingwood gold explooit in the last patch.

I just heard this game. Yesterday I saw that on stream and loved. Can't purchase it yet but can't wait too. Is there any way to get Early Access key before 3rd Feb.?

You need to travel back in time and back the project on Kickstarter on Wanderer Level or above.

Weird. Steam release date say "COMING FEB. 3" instead of 3 Feb 2015 as usual and there is no countdown for this game on Steam.

Saw Dan's Gaming and a couple others playing this last night on Twitch.

Looks absolutely amazing. Don't have the spare cash (or time really) now, but I'm definitely interested. Love the art style.
