MGSV: The Phantom Pain - New information revealed

The cutscenes actually count towards the time played in MGS4.

i realize that. my first playthroughs of both MGS3 and 4 were close to 20 hours. there's like 9 hours of cutscenes in 4 and like 5 hours of cutscenes in 3. that's a lot of gameplay. i also play my stealth games very, very slow and methodically. but still, they aren't call of duty campaign short. closer to uncharted-type length

When it comes to speedruns, I believe those are around 1.5 hours in length.

Personally I don't mind, I'm not complaining. I'm a huge Metal Gear fan, and I know what to expect whenever a new game is launched.

The Phantom Pain may be the first one with an extended period of gameplay, due to the open world structure, though. =)

yeah, very true

Of course it won't be that simple. Your unique characters (DD, Ocelot etc.) are probably hidden.

I will endeavour to invade the Mother Base's of as many GAFers as I can. I'll strap C4 to the back of a soldier, begin to Fulton them, and blow them up in mid air, all for revenge. You can't go offline. You have to join in on that fun.

they've mentioned this concept of a "Forward Operating Base," in MGSV. my assumption is that players can attack the FOB, not the main hub motherbase. so there may be a way to protect assets that are vital to the story that way.

This game is gonna' be fuckin' boss. AI patterns changing based on weather systems? That's the kind of stuff I really want to see in the inevitable barrage of open-world games this generation.

Fulton Zoo could be cool depending on how it's used. It might have been discussed already, but I'm not actively looking for information about this game because I like surprises.

Yep and not just weather. For example if you're on a mission and you headshot everyone and then later replay that mission the guards will now wear helmets. The Fox Engine will remember and counter tactics you use too much.

I'm pretty sure there is some "punishment" for the fulton recovery system too if you use it too often.

Also guards change shifts depending on the time of day. They showed this in the Gamescom gameplay demo. In the E3 demo there were two guards patrolling and then in the Gamescom demo they were gone, just because the time of day was different.

This just adds another layer to the replayability.

That's cool and all, but I'm not going to replay a mission just to see all the soldiers with helmets. I hope there's more interesting reasons for me to replay missions, otherwise I'm just going to run through the campaign and then jump straight into MGO.

C'mon. There are more than 2.5 hours of gameplay in metal gear solid 3... wtf at that statement.

did you play peace walker? you'd want to replay missions to (a) use new items you've obtained and mess around with them, (b) S rank them, (c) challenge yourself to beat them using new tactics, (d) earn more GMP to develop even more cool items

Definitely not how I played MGS4 after the first time, a pure stealth run would definitely take you a while but the game gives you a metric fuck ton of lethal weapons for a reason, and if you use them the game becomes EZ mode and you can beat the game very very fast.

It's also the easiest game in the series to stealth so after the first playthrough I just had no desire to really play it that way again. And lets be honest...how do you think MOST people play MGS? I know it's most enjoyable to stealth it personally, but most of the people I know in RL who are more casual fans will just Rambo it each and every time.

I did, and I hardly replayed any missions. The only ones interesting to me there are maybe a) and d). Now if the gameplay in itself is super addicting, I may strive for b) and c) just to keep playing. We'll see.

interesting, i've never rambo'd through an mgs game

Now that you reminded me how it actually works, it doesn't sound so bad. For some reason I was thinking that I'd have to come back from a mission and be immediately thrust into another major firefight at Motherbase. A more passive system that relies on your tactical base design sounds way better.

Well, maybe. I don't know that, it's just how they made it sound from the demos I've seen. Like, if the player is there they can intervene, but they don't necessarily have to be there? I just know that it sounds like tons of fun to me! : )

That PS event is going to turn out to be a Powers premiere viewing or something.

Doing b) gets you cool item unlocks for a)

Oh, I believe the speed run thing but I was referring to your previous statement. It'd be pretty rare for someone to play through mgs3 first time clocking in at 2.5 hours.

I never said "first playthrough."

I did it in 3 hours, no cutscene run. Obviously not on my first playthrough, and I had already memorized enemy patrols and boss patterns. But yes, it is possible.

Metal Gear games have very short gameplay segments, and have always been famous, in part, because of this. I don't know why you find it so surprising, brah.

It might be a bit like GZ where you have completely different missions and objectives on the same map. Obviously, given the size of TTP's maps, the missions would probably be in locations the main game doesn't focus on.

It's hard to watch man.

I watched a friend play MGS3 getting an alert in every area and never once using CQC or stealth items, it's frustrating.

MGS4 did kind of cater to that kind of gameplay with it being in a war setting though.

I still hope there's more to the open world sandboxes than sneaking into building A to achieve objective A, followed by searching for location B for objective B. MGS 1, 2, and 3 were very focused games that took hours (on the first playthrough) to sneak around a base to gain access to previously restricted areas. Even MGS 3 took hours of slogging through jungles, swamps, caves, and mountains just to reach the target areas.

So much of what's been shown seems like a slightly tweaked Ubisoft open world where everywhere relevant is accessible (all else is blocked off by invisible barriers), and merely reaching the objectives then exiting is all that's asked of you. I still want infiltration.

Edit: I am sure Koiji can provide the gameplay goods, as GZ had fantastic groundwork for sneaking in a fully immersive world, I just don't feel like I've seen the complexity in gameplay/mission structure, yet.

Aye I remember hearing about how guards can prep against you based on past actions. I am a bit more apprehensive about that one because I play games the way I do for a reason: I enjoy playing them that way. If dudes start kitting up to stop me having fun with headshots from 200yds away, that might make me enjoy it a bit less.

Weather system, however, is perfect because if I don't like the conditions well screw it I'll wait a while. What would be perfect is if the guards prepared for you for the next few days (hours? whatever) but went back to normal shortly after. This would let me wait it out in the same way that I can wait for the weather to change. Again, this may have been mentioned already but I've been on partial blackout.

Fulton recovery punishment should be parts of the base just collapsing into the sea if you have too much stuff on it :p

Thinking about this game is... oh it's just too much :(

I imagine that's where things like the buddy AI come into play. We've already seen armored guards getting de-armored so the player can headshot them. With that and many other things in mind, most people should be able to tackle things however they want most of the time.

That said, I think it's great that the game acts against the player only using one tactic in a natural way, rather than arbitrarily not allowing certain things, or alternatively, having the game break down when one strategy is found to be too overpowered. I hope it actually works as they've stated.

This is more and more looking like the best game in the series, and therefore also one of the best games of all time. I loved the atmosphere in GZ already.

they've mentioned this concept of a "Forward Operating Base," in MGSV. my assumption is that players can attack the FOB, not the main hub motherbase. so there may be a way to protect assets that are vital to the story that way.

I noticed that in Peace Walker's opening Zadornov refers to the first Mother Base as a "Forward Operating Base" as well.

So I dunno, it may just be a way to refer to another player's Mother Base rather than implying it's a second base for online.

Big Boss isn't "completely naked" anymore. He eats his meals back at Mother Base, unlike Snake Eater where Zero told him he'd have to eat all his meals in the jungle.

I think that was speculation by YeeYong based on Eyestone's wording. And I think some other gaffers brought it up before he did as well. But I don't think Eyestone himself specifically referred to it as another base, he just kept calling it an FOB instead of Mother Base in the vid. It may be because "Mother Base" only refers to the story/your own base.

Well said.

And besides. Why would he need to go survival mode when he has an entire base working for him, with possibly a hundred men working for the mess hall. He could easily parachute some supplies to him at any time.
