The Order 1886 gameplay vids

So do reviewers usually play games on the lowest difficulty? Also, how long is Gears 1 normally? The speed run took about an hour, though I dunno if glitches were involved.

Its interesting to me that a lot of the time a game will have allowances made if it looks ordinary but plays really well, and yet if those strengths/weaknesses are reversed its alright to pan it for it.

The Order looks absolutely amazing, so how good does it really need to be gameplay-wise to avoid a critical beating? I mean specifically the sort of "not next-gen enough" complaints that I've read in several places.

I'm not suggesting pretty graphics should be a "get-out-of-jail-free" type of clause, but surely when so much effort is put into the visual presentation of something some credit must be given to it? If just for the reason that if something is presented really well, you can't complain about the makers inability to sell you on the time/place/theme, at best you can say is that fiction fundamentally doesn't appeal to you.

Which is fair enough, but can't really be taken as anything but the most subjective of reactions - it's not a true criticism if you simply dislike the genre or theme.

What I'm getting at is basically can presentation ever elevate average but adequate gameplay to the extent that it makes it a recommended purchase? Or should the game be treated more harshly because its visuals make promises the mechanics fail to keep?

The whole five hours thing comes from this PSN profile that has completed the game (Spoilers in some of the trophies, click at own risk):
http://psnprofiles.com/trophies/3291-The-Order-1886/wMikkel

First trophy obtained was at 10:32 AM on Feb 3rd. The trophy you get for beating the game was obtained at 3:24 PM on Feb 3rd. That's five hours. Now, there's no way in knowing how long it took from start up to the first trophy obtained. Just the time from first trophy to completion trophy is shown.

5 headshots in blacksight and a gold trophy makes me think that it wasn't obtained until about an hour into the game, maybe longer.

Famousmortimer got himself a gaming website?

I still have a horrible feeling this is going to be one of the biggest disappointments of the year. It hasn't done anything to inspire confidence in me.

It's like people are willing this game to fail for absolutely no reason at all.

It's a new IP, developed by a great developer, interesting setting, cool (gory) gameplay, incredible visuals, and an enticing story involving werewolves.

I personally feel like a lot of the abuse this game is receiving is weirdly manufactured and without any substance.

If the reviews come back and are miserable, well then, it may be justified, but if it scores favorably, crow shall be eaten with a fine wine.

Would the baying mob like gold or silver plates to dine on the black bird? :)

Lay down you're torches, it's time to bask in the shimmering light of Victorian London.

I can't wait for Feb 20th.

I totally get the reservations people have over this, but damn it looks good. I'm excited to play it. Should be one hell of a rental at least.

Literally nothing about it has given me that feeling, so I disagree wholeheartedly. If anything, the stuff they've shown the past few months has inspired more confidence in me than anything they showed before.

I don't get it either, getting very tired of the "oh another third person shooter with QTEs lol boring where is the innovation" lines. Even if it's only that, there is a market for it. I don't mind that type games, I enjoy them immensely, especially when it has a cool storyline, setting, or even better, some nice graphics as well. I also like other types of games. Choice is good. Not every 'new IP' needs to up the Peter Molyneux "This game changes everything you know about gameplay trust me I know what Im doing" bar.

Why do so many people want multiplayer? I thought there was a general consensus that we decided we don't want MP modes shoehorned into something designed as a single player experience.

What happened, GAF?

I understand they didn't add multiplayer because of time and budget constraints. But I'd love something like Killzone: Shadowfall intercept. Imagine you and your friends each controlling a different member of the order, each with different weapons, taking on hordes of Lycans and rebels. I think it could be awesome.

That would be amazing if RAD are up for it. They did an incredible job with the God of War games on PSP. If Santa Monica ever stopped making GoW, the torch can be passed to RAD, hopefully as a reboot with new setting and characters.

Or they could just continue with The Order, or yet another new IP.

It might have been a matter of time and budget, but I really found the PSP GOW's lacking. I can understand not having all the epic set pieces since it was on a handheld, but the level design was sorely lacking compared to SSM's efforts.

me, i've seen nothing indicating i'll be disappointed. otoh, i'm not expecting some kinda 'next gen gameplay' revelation, but merely a good-looking, well-built bit of fun...

i find that one's level of disappointment can only ever be in proportion to one's level of expectations. & that, if the latter is within reason, the former's that much less likely to occur at all :) ...

Probably just different people speaking. I'm always thrilled when devs focus on a great single player experience. However, some people will always beg for multi nomatter what, even in games that don't need it.

I'd say save it for the sequel. The gameplay looks like it leans a lot on shooting, so I think the resources that would have gone to MP are probably better used making the core experience as tight as possible.

If they get a sequel, I'd be pretty surprised if it didn't include MP. For a new IP though, can't really blame them for sticking to making the campaign as memorable as possible.

Yeah, but the game is done now. The assets are there. Why not create a multiplayer add-on?

People don't want a shoehorned MP. They want a good MP, and this game is in a genre that is popular for MP.

This is a cinematic, (seemingly) linear, story driven shooter. I haven't seen anything shown that indicates this would be a good candidate for multiplayer. The main hook/draws seem to be the story and setting.

I'm not surprised to hear it's super short, but I'm glad that's the case. Makes for a perfect weekend rental now that Redbox carries PS4 games. Plus, that way I won't have to stomach too much of the gameplay in order to check out the cool graphics.
