Essentially it's an action-adventure sci-fi reimagining of the original Little Mermaid story, with fights against massive robotic enemies inspired by Shadow of the Colossus

Story
It’s this reimagining of Hans Cristian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, where we take the literal mermaid away and replace her with this machine, this blank slate of a creature that’s just terrified of disappearing one day, and I think that’s something everyone can connect to,” Rutkowski says. “This is the Hans Cristian Andersen version, it’s a little bit darker. The idea behind The Little Mermaid, when he wrote it he had a strictly Christian background, and there’s this notion that nothing except for human beings have souls.

...The story goes, that PISCES is The Little Mermaid, this machine that’s suddenly found a tiny bit of consciousness and she, no matter what, wants to gain a soul. She becomes terrified that at the end of her days, she might live for 300 years being a machine, but there’s nothing for her to go on to, no possibility of an afterlife.”

...“PISCES takes place at the end of a technological Atlantis,” says Rutkowski. “The idea is that everything is being flooded and everyone’s moving up and up into high altitudes. So there’s a lot of snow, a lot of water. It’s not a tropical environment or anything like that. It’s not a desert either. It’s kind of this imagined space, that doesn’t geographically go anywhere.

Gameplay
Despite not being the sole emphasis, PISCES does involve combat. Battles are large scale and strategic, requiring careful planning to avoid a swift demise. “It’s a paced game,” says Rutkowski. “You have your quiet time figuring out how to defeat the larger enemies that you’ll see. It’s sort of a strategy time mixed with the moments of action. I don’t want to give away too much about it, but way I’d describe it is if you’ve played Shadow of the Colossus. It’s less of the action side of Colossus, half the time. We try to take the misery of dying over and over again out of defeating a larger creature by giving the player time to, almost like a puzzle, figure out what you have to do. To set traps is the best way to describe it.

...One of the things that we’re going to show in the KickStarter is how powerful the PISCES character actually is. She can manifest these black shards that float around her and she can cast them out. Those shards can pull across the ground and create massive boulders that you can use to bash against the larger robots. As she turns more and more human, the thing is that she loses that ability, so she becomes weaker and weaker. What will happen is you will see her as more and more human. She’s evolving beyond just being a machine, and you have to take up the slack, up to the gamer’s character to fulfil that role.”

The enemies in PISCES are really big. “You always need an antagonist in a game, and they’re the driving force you’re going against with PISCES,” Rutkowski says. “The enemy AI is this lumbering, it’s not a dumb AI, but it works off the Lovecraftian idea that human beings are these small, insignificant things next to these gigantic elements in the universe. It’s not like these elements really care about the tiny little ants, we’re just existing on their plane, and they’ll crush us, not maliciously, but just because we’re like ants to them. But if you do piss them off enough, they will hunt you down.”

There's a Kickstarter planned for the 20th. More development info and screenshots on the dev's Twitter page

Woooow...completely outta left field...that is a bonkers character design

Everything in this sentence is amazing

I was gonna comment on the first image's chara's clothes, until I saw the crazy ass hair, then I ended up liking the design.
Hope this game'll deliver.

Yeah I noticed this a well...the bottom half of her clothing is just bad especially belly button hole thing....outside of that minor complaint this thing looks incredible

Googling around and it appears they've had this kickstarter planned for like ever. Seeing teases for it back in 2013 and apparently a spinoff mobile 2d game for backers.

Game looks cool if a bit ambitious for a kickstarter with fairly unknown devs. I mean he's all over the place in that interview, talking about Kinect when they only have PC planned for the KS.

I hope they can meet their funding needs and deliver a good game, but this is such a problem with ambitious indie projects.

I hope and prayed to god, that this game becomes a real thing, as I am a huge fan of the little mermaid, both the original and Disney version.

don't really like the character design but I like the concept of the story and direction they want to go gameplay wise.

Oh look, another tired ass cybernetic mermaid woman lead character. *yawn*

looks damn amazing, interested in the description of that strategic combat. Graphics look great!

You know what would be cool? Destroying structures and environment to damage or defeat enemies. I don't think there are any shooters that do that, unless I missed out on playing them.

Art design is incredible. Wow.

Hoping they can deliver a good game underneath all that.

My initial thoughts are about the same. And though I do have a few reservations about the protagonist's actual design, the concept behind it is great.

I'm actually really curious as to what direction this is planned to go in musically as well - the stark environment, (post?)cyberpunk atmosphere and mythic tone need a score of comparable scope to accompany them.

Not too sure about the references to Christianity. Not being of that faith I'd rather avoid have it preached to me while trying to enjoy a game, but otherwise a very interesting idea, and looks bloody cool.

Seem's kind of too grand an idea though in some ways, hopefully it's not a case of ambition outstripping talent. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on it.

The Christian reference point is from the original writer of the Little Mermaid. There's nothing in that interview to imply they're going to preach it.

Its true to the original though, in that it was about her quest for a soul.

Mmmeh, Kickstarter sounds way too small-scale for a project like this unless they plan to make this only an hour or two long or get other funding. Sounds & looks a bit too ambitious to be a Kickstarter project. Can't help but remember other cool sounding nothing-came-out-of-it games like Wardevil when it comes to projects like this.

Aside from my personal annoyance at the continued use of the phrase "like [this other thing] but darker" all throughout the entertainment industry (it gives me a fucking tic -- seriously, think of something else to say), the concept and art direction here looks really great. Godspeed to the team.

In fairness, in this case it comes across less like 'here's this piece of children's literature but EDGY'; and rather 'the original story has some interesting implications worth expanding on'.

If i was under the sea, i wouldn't want to kiss this girl. Sorry pisces you poor unfortunate soul but i do not want to be part of your world
