Can't you guys just import it? It's not like it's on a Nintendo console anyway.

Importing's possible, yeah, but if I wanted a physical copy on time I'd have to pay a ton in shipping and even then it'd take a few days. I did the same with Ultimax and my order messed up then so I got it like a week later, too.

Local release means I can buy it for a reasonable price and get it the day of release or earlier.
I liked Persona 4 but the kissing the MC's ass too much bugged me a bit.
Aye, biggest problem with the P4MC right there. P3 I felt more like just some shmuck with special powers in with the rest, P4 veered a bit too far in to wish fulfilment territory.

Please no online. Not every game needs to be online and I hate that it seems like devs think the opposite.

Eh I think its fine and it actually could add a lot to the game if done right, as long as its not extremely intrusive that is. Keep it optional and rewarding, but not necessary to make the game enjoyable.

I imagine if it existed it would be an evolution of Golden's online support system

I can't think of any game that's bigger than Persona 4 Golden. Even with the dungeons taking only half as long to get through, that version in particular is just insanely dense with stuff to do.

I think the only game that comes close in hours for me was 100%ing FFX, and most of that is just various forms of grinding. P4Golden is surprisingly light on that as far as JRPGs go.

You must've not played Persona 3 then.

Anybody familiar with Japanese game translations know how early they start translating?

Would you really want to play a game that you have to read along with?

That sounds like a REALLY annoying way to have to play a title. Would dramatically be to the detriment of the play experience.

I think he means when the official translation of the game begins, not if its possible/enjoyable to play the game while translating it.

And answering his question, I have no idea, but I guess really early on. But I am sure it must depends on a lot of different factors like if/who is translating it (internally or externally), price, release schedule, promotion/advertising, etc.

No, Japanese devs are going PS exclusive because nobody gives a flying shit about Xbox in Japan. I don't think you understand just how much Xbox is insignificant in Japan, the Xbox One is currently being outsold by the freaking Vita TV. It's deader than dead. Any Japanese dev who is not making a game specifically with an international audience in mind is just not going to care about doing an Xbox One version.

Oh I perfectly understand that the X1 situation in Japan is very dire, since I follow the Japanese sales every week. However, the X1 still has a decent sized audience in the US and UK and it's the reason why Square, Konami and Capcom still support the console as long as its still viable.

As for Atlus, they did support the 360 pretty well until recently.

I think it's a pretty good guess that Atlus US has already started the process of translating the game right?

It'd be easier to maybe speculate if we had that kind of information for the localization process of previous Atlus USA, internally developed Atlus games. At least, I feel like they must have started work on P4D after yesterday's unveil.

I would definitely think so, as they've said themselves it's a 2015 release in the west. Not sure how organic the development process is so we likely won't see a simultaneous release. Hopefully it won't be as long as the wait for P4 was.

Why not? Catherine's online aspects were limited and a nice bonus. For instance, if there's weather cycles in P5, it'd be cool to use current Tokyo weather conditions. Or extra challenge modes where you can see other people's ghost runs on heist missions.

I want to ask, but did anyone dislike the fact that everyone's issues/problems in Persona 4 were solved through the MC. Like the cast didn't actually develop on their own without relying on the MC. That's probably one of reasons why I prefer P3 over P4 because in P3 the characters actually developed on their own merits without relying on the help of the MC. To me it actually made the protagonist not a mary sue in P3 than in P4. Though all this is my opinion.

Anyways I just hope in P5 they don't make the cast rely too much on the MC and actually have them develop on their own merits.
Nope, that's why I like P4 better. I like being the catalyst for the party member's growth while also having the player character growing themselves With the additional game play bonuses.

And I'm not sure how you can claim the P3 protagonist isn't a perfect too, he's a ladies man, is skilled at any weapon, his persona is literally jesus, etc

Woah what!? Catherine was online? No way I missed that. I beat the game two times.

Having a decent install base means little if a lot of your fanbase isn't there.

He's probably talking about the Catherine end-of-level polls, which gathered results from every player online to compare the player's to. That was very neat. P4G also had online elements like the Vox Populi, which were interesting additions.

Multiplayer or co-op would be awful, but little stuff like that could be interesting. Not that that's what I think "Cooperation" is, though. Most likely just S. Link stuff.

I think it's safe to assume Persona Q release date gap as it has more dialogues than P4U and most likely P4D as well.

Persona Q release date gap is an outlier when it comes to Atlus games, so I wouldn't necessarily think so.

The questions you got asked at the end of every puzzle got uploaded and divided into a percentage with what other people chose on the same question. The results were displayed as a pie chart during the following loading screen.

That's a good point and I wouldn't be surprised that a lot of Japanese publishers of the more niche titles last gen got burnt with doing a 360 SKU for the West, but didn't perform as nearly as well as the PS3 version despite having double the userbase in those markets.

The big AAA franchises with international mainstream appeal (Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, etc.) are going to support the Xbox One, that's guaranteed, they're not going to waste those potential overseas sales. But for everything below that (yes that includes Persona), it's just not going to happen.

If you bought an Xbox One and expected to play B-tier Japanese games, you made the wrong decision.

The secret is that Persona is really an A tier Japanese RPG but not everyone knows it yet.

If it means waiting a few more months for it, I'd just bite the bullet and import it. (I live in London.) Given the exchange rates these days, the shipping costs balance out against the more ridiculous euro prices where new current gen titles run upwards to £45-50.

Though I should add I'm only considering a physical copy if there's a good collector's edition; Digital's the better option since I've always held a US account.

I'd say Person is A-tier on everything but sales.

While true, I think his point still stands. If you bought an Xbox One expecting anything outside the big major Japanese titles coming to your platform, you dun goofed. That wasn't the case with the PS3/360 most of the time and I see no reason why it would be the case when Sony is dominating.

It's never about objective quality, it's about how the market sees it. (Also arguable given that all SMT games until now have been low to mid budget affairs)

Though with the amount of hype emanating from the gaming community, this has the potential to enter the mainstream consciousness.

Well P4 Arena Ultimax has a lot of dialogue too and the thing was localizing both it and Persona Q at the same time.

If they focus on Persona 5 and translate it as it is made then the two release dates could be pretty close. The thing they'd need the most right now is the whole voiced portions set in stone so they can get started on casting, recording and work with everyone's schedules. Re-recording scenes is a real pain. Localizing the menus and non-voiced in-game text is not the hard part because even if P Studio changes those before the game ships, they're easy to localize quickly for a new build. But if P Studio isn't done with the story and are still recording stuff late in development then that's not ideal for localization.

But by localizing two games chock full of voiced-content in P4 Arena Ultimax (especially heavy for a fighting game) and Persona Q (a lengthy dungeon-crawler) at the same time those had different situations than other games they've localized.

While all of Atlus's PS2 RPGs (including P3/P4) and pretty much all their handheld fare from the past few years are low-mid budget games, it's pretty clear P5 has several times the budget of anything else Atlus has put out in the past ten years except possibly Catherine.

In hindsight, the 360 was actually pretty damn successful in Japan compared to how badly the Xbone is currently doing. It only sold 1.6 million but the PS3 did not break any records either with its mere 10 million.

Also the 360 had a big 1 year lead over the PS3, which meant developers jumped in early on and then sticked around for a while. The Xbox One on the other hand released later than the PS4, making it completely DOA.

MS was funding games like Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, as well as timed exclusive such as Tales of Vesperia and Star Ocean. They haven't done anything for Xbox 1.
