The Order 1886 gameplay vids

Dragons Dogma also had the black bars, and I never realized it until after i platinumed the game. I expect that even with my awareness of them in The Order going in, I won't care, as it is built with that in mind, for specific functions.

Not a fan of the aspect ratio either. Personally, I think it's beyond stupid and shouldn't exist in any video game. It's a video game that's being played, not a movie that's being watched. Just hoping that unlike so much other crap in gaming, this doesn't become a trend.

With that said, im assuming that the aspect ratio of The Order is the same as The Evil Within which means that I'll be doing what I did with The Evil Within - lower the PS4 resolution to 480p which eliminates the black bars to the size of a millimeter on the top and bottom. Granted, it won't look as good but it will still look good enough and I personally rather have the majority of my HDTV screen.

This guy.. if serious you're one almighty numpty. Don't you realise you must be cutting off the sides of the image, like actually cutting off sides of the image that are being rendered of the actual gameplay, because you wanted to get rid of black borders where none of the game is being rendered anyway. Talk about cutting your nose off to spite your face. You're seeing LESS of the game, not more. FML.

I think playing in 480p is a pretty good solution for someone who absolutely cannot stand black bars.

Alternatively you could scratch the upper and lower part of your cornea so you wouldn't have to see the black bars. Seems as good a solution as 480p to me.

lol, hilarious how lowering resolution is considered " zooming "

LMAO

Ah man, I truly do love gaming and gamers. The shit that people come up with.

You're a mod. Could you be more proactive about updating thread titles?

If an The Order 1886 thread is older than 2 days it should have its title updated so that everyone knows it's about black bars again. Would suck if a thread wouldn't be about that topic, I think there is lots of unexplored space on that topic.

Getting really excited about this. The setting is fascinating, the gunplay is weighty and satisfying, and the presentation looks ace. Friday is also a great launch day for me. Hoping Evolve and Majora's Mask can tide me over. Love single player adventures like this; hope it pans out.

All that black space in the bars for starters.

On another note, good to see prominent members of PC-Gaf have graced this thread with their presence.

Yeah but ughh... let's not get off-topic here. What do you think about the black borders, old chap?

just watched django unchained via netflix and the black borders vanished from my consciousness within minutes, but the wide screen framing was used to good effect in many key scenes.
Perhaps 1886 will also make use of the wide screen too? if not, no problem, unless your tv has a white surround they wont stick out.

Anyway... how about them QTEs?

Should be good if they're used effectively. It's all in the execution.

Though I have my doubts about their pervasiveness. IIRC I didn't encounter any in the abridged PSX demo and I believe there's only one QTE sequence (the cockpit fight) in the full 45 minute demo. Even then, the branching paths should be neat.

You playing on a small screen?

Your solution sounds horrendous. Reduce the IQ due to the aspect ratio? Madness.

I will probably play this multiple times just because of the hit reactions, so important to satisfying gunplay. I've finished Max Payne 3 eight times and the animation/damage system was a huge part of that replaybility.

One thing is for certain, all this talk is giving any unscrupulous reviewers plenty of elbow room. Regardless of whether any of it is true, we seem to have already established its faults. These reviewers know full well that all that will be said is 'as I suspected'.
I think we can safely assume (regardless of high or low scores) that the only reliable source will be the many people who play it; just like Driveclub.

People need to stop with this bullshit. No where in the ToS does it say you can't come with criticism toward a Sony exclusive title.

Whilst I absolutely agree with you, I think the issue with The Order 1886 threads has been the volume of disingenuous or feigned criticisms. For example, those calling it a movie instead of a game, those making snide remarks about there being no gameplay, about the game being a QTE fest (when in reality in the actual demos for it, there's been barely any QTE's), about it being like a David Cage game and so on. I feel like the QTE complaints are less common now, but there's certainly been a fair share of the movie and no gameplay remarks recently.

I get that people may not like this type of gameplay or genre of game, and that's perfectly fine, but trying to redefine and insinuate what is or isn't a video game, or what is or isn't gameplay, based on those subjective tastes, is just poor form. Video games comes in all shapes, sizes and forms, and it's disappointing to see some try to pigeon hole this beautifully diverse hobby in to such a confined and limited scope of properties. David cage games, Mario, Uncharted, Myst, Grim Fandango, and The Order 1886, they're all video games and they all have gameplay, whether you like or care about the genre and type of gameplay or not.

This thread is weird.
It was inevitable.

The Order is openly cinematic, has black bars to replicate a specific cinematic aspect ratio, is single player only, has QTEs and looks to be ridgedly linear and narrative driven and finally is PS4 exclusive.

It's like RAD set out to troll the Internet.

It's kind of delicious.

I think 480p would destroy the beauty of The Order. I would just skip the game all together, if black bars bothered me that much. To each his own thought I couldn't possibly do that.

Looks like Order 1886 is going to sell very well if we look at the Amazon best seller list(hourly) for the last few days. Its slowly climbing and currently its at #22 when we still 2 weeks left for the release.

Ohh fuck off with that shit

Anyone who is truly "distracted" by black bars - literally the absence of information - should read up on the psychology of attention and come to terms with the fact that their brain is fucked.

If it turns out that the FOV is terrible and interferes with gameplay and that design choice was somehow directly related to the black bars, then that's another thing. But black bars on their own should not be an issue.

Some of these comments I just cant.

Why should he? Its a very true statement, despite the millions of Driveclub sucks reviews and all of the slander the game got from the press its my favorite racing game in years. That and Mario Kart 8 are my go to racers despite owning all consoles and their associated racing games. If I had listened to reviews I would have never given Drive club a chance. Ergo his logic is sound.

Its not a true statement. Its mental to assume that before these conspiring reviewers have done their verdict, we can all be certain and should prepare in advance. I just hate the shit atmosphere these kind of statements create pre-launch. Its enough of a drag enough with people spouting shite about the bars, the gameplay over and over again. We don't need more shite about how in his opinion we should all be preparing for war or some shit. Fuck that.

It means when we do get to review/release day everyone goes insane and people split into groups with ideas like this one. Though I do enjoy those threads. Carry on.

Depends what is alleged.
There are some that claim that reviewers are out to get Sony exclusive titles or they are harsher on those than on other games.
I think that is a fantasy.

If he alleges that reviewers are too homogenized and don't excel in any genre to even understand why something is good or not then he is 100% spot on.

The people in the enthusiast press live in such an obvious filter bubble that they just take opinions by other enthusiast press members without playing the games and see for themselves.

It's not different from an OT thread. Whether or not it's positive or negative there are some posters that are motivated than others that have an influence over the feel of a discussion.

We all have games that we love despite bad reviews. Doesn't warrant preemptively searching for excuses why those that won't adhere to our own opinion will be dishonest before reading them. And Driveclub had a ton of problems at release even beyond the embarrassingly broken multiplayer, let's not pretend there was no room for complaints (most have been rectified by now which makes earlier reviews less relevant and maybe there should be re-reviews but that's another discussion).

I'll be impressed when we have this level of graphics in an open world game that is full of real/meaningful physical interaction with the game world.

I have never interacted meaningfully with a game world. Not enough verbs.

I would however be impressed if I did, even if it was with worse graphics than The Order.

Driveclub is fun it was shit on by reviewers pretty badly actually. I tend to completely ignore reviews when games like titanfall get amazingly over the top reviews and games like DC get very middling scores. Just shows there is some bias. Not saying its against sony but there is definitely some sort of disconnect between review scores and what actually is fun.

I love how this game is probably going to fuck over anyone who tries to zoom away the black bars. You won't be able to see your ammo count and the FoV will be awful, making combat and even basic navigation difficult since the camera is so close to Galahad.

Depends what is alleged.

You've nailed why there are literally no reviewers in gaming these days that I agree with.
