Looks like he made it on his iphone with a fisheye lens.

Learn how to write dialogue and make a narrative structure, hack.

At first the film looked tonally unlike anything Malick has done before. Then the second half of the trailer happened and FUCK.

I need this film so bad now.

Exactly my feelings, once that first melancholic and nostalgic full of feelings like of an afternoon in 1985 feeling the breeze scene appeared I knew it was my boy Malick.

God I love his movies so much.

Another pretentious film people will pretend to like to feel like they are smart.

Malick's films are wholly experiential and have little to do with "feeling smart". I reviewed TREE OF LIFE a few years ago and said that his films are ones you have to feel, not think, your way through.

They really are a "love it or hate it" sort of deal.

Bucking typical narrative structure doesn't mean being unaware of it or bad at it. Given his literal 40-year career, and the fact that he spent about half of it writing scripts (including a draft of Dirty Harry! lol), odds are there's nothing he has to "learn."

Finding this thread, with the title, again was a pain :lol

Runtime revealed as 118 minutes, plus new (longer) synopsis:

Rick is a slave to the Hollywood system. He is addicted to success but simultaneously despairs at the emptiness of his life. He is at home in a world of illusions but seeks real life. Like the tarot card of the title, Rick is easily bored and needs outside stimulation. But the Knight of Cups is also an artist, a romantic and an adventurer.

In Terrence Malick’s seventh film a gliding camera once again accompanies a tormented hero on his search for meaning. Once again a voiceover is laid over images which also seek their own authenticity. And once again Malick seems to put the world out of joint. His symphonic flow of images contrasts cold, functional architecture with the ageless beauty of nature. Rick’s internal monologue coalesces with the voices of the women who cross his path, women who represent different principles in life: while one lives in the real world, the other embodies beauty and sensuality. Which path will Rick choose? In the city of angels and the desert that surrounds it, will he find his own way?

Movie looks really interesting and I'm loving that poster. Really surprised that there isn't am actor or a giant face on it. Then again, it's not an American poster(I think).

Looks pretty good to me but I'm also a fan of anything Bale does. Malick films I could care less about usually but I might watch this.

The New World is the only Malick film I struggle to get through. It doesn't help that I'm not a huge Colin Farell fan. I'd enjoy that film a lot better if the Bale/Farell roles were reversed.

I disagree.
John Smith is (in the film anyway) a coward, weak douchebag, and Farrell has the perfect face for that role.
Rolfe is a more mature and thoughtful person, and Bale does have that gravitas and can convey that tranquillity.

I absolutely hate Bale
That's a very strong emotion for someone that has very little if anything to do with you.

---------------

I'm very interested in the premise of this movie, or at least what I assume to be the premise from watching the trailer: it seems to be about the difference between savoring life and enjoying the "imagery of life," for lack of a better description. It's so, so relevant to today's western society. I hope it's a well made movie and has a big impact on people.

Twitter reactions:

"Malik continues to circle around Tree of Life's huge themes (death, longing, faith) with Knight of Cups. Glad to say it works." #berlinale

"Well, at least I know what film we'll be arguing about for the rest of 2015." #teamkoc

@KevinErickssson RT "@firstshowing: Honestly I am floored by Knight of Cups. not at all what I was expecting, but so much more in every way."

"Terrence Malick ranked:
7. TO THE WONDER
6. BADLANDS
5. DAYS OF HEAVEN
4. KNIGHT OF CUPS
3. TREE OF LIFE
2. THIN RED LINE
1. NEW WORLD"

"KNIGHT OF CUPS > TO THE WONDER
(thank god)" #Berlinale

Filmbrain (Andrew G) @Filmbrain
"KNIGHT OF CUPS: Flirtations w/ narrative, fragments of a life, and a portrait of Los Angeles that outdoes all others. A masterwork."

Stephen Mayne @finalreel:
"Bad Malick. Slightly better version of To the Wonder. Beautiful to look at, music superb, content bland."

Neil Young @JigsawLounge:
"Still a bit shaken after KNIGHT OF CUPS - Malick's best since THIN RED LINE, surely. TO THE WONDER essentially an elaborate sketch for this."

Karsten Meinich @KarstenM:
"Terrence Malick goes completely into a Godardian essayism with KNIGHT OF CUPS - an emotional and terrifying world of phantoms and images."

Hanna Newton @popcorn pyjamas
"KNIGHT OF CUPS was a beautiful let down. Definitely style over substance here."

Eric Eidelstein @ericeidelstein
"Am I crazy or was there a Twin Peaks Major Briggs voiceover in KNIGHT OF CUPS?"

Adam Cook @AdamCook:
"KNIGHT OF CUPS is Malick at his most explorative—TTW was an awkward step toward what he's arrived at here...Great? Maybe. Astonishing? Yes."

Redmond Bacon @RedmondBacon:
"Knight of cups was like really good but also really on-the-nose. Didn't know whether to clap, boo or burst out laughing. #Berlinale"

Knight of Cups - Malick is BACK & better than ever! Stunning. Mesmerizing trip thru life of an actor, pretending to be anyone but himself.

I think you could show Christian Bale sitting on a toilet for two minutes scored with music and ti would be a good trailer.

I really can't wait to see this. Assuming it comes out this year I'll be surprised if it doesn't end up being my favourite of 2015.
