It's time for Lauda to smack some sense into him...literally before the season starts. Don't you want to join Senna and Lauda in the history books Lewis? Get the fuck over her God Damn it!!!!!

I genuinely fear for Alonso's sanity if Ferrari are quick this year.

I don't know, that race where Alonso kept Schuey behind him until the finish was pretty decent.

He was only able to do that because they ruined every single over taking place on the track. It's just like Hungary now. :( It was an awesome drive, no doubt, but on the old track I think Shumi would have been past.

Nah, Michael was able to pass Button on track that race. (Jenson achieved pole position in that Honda he was driving, it was no slouch) The Renault Alonso had happened to have awesome torque relative to the Ferrari and it gave him a critical advantage in the race.
I love Imola. Last I heard, they took out the speed curbing chicanes and its configuration is the way it was in the 80s/90s.

Thought I'd share this as some of you may have an interest.

Since Day 2 of the Jerez test, I've been modelling a generic 2015-spec* car, and this is what I have so far. I say so far, it's likely as much as I'll do to the model itself, with an any other details being done in textures whenever I find the time.

I built it using official FIA car diagrams (which seem to be of questionable scale in places, and almost certainly not 2015-compliant) as a basic template, and by eyeballing a load of photo references from the test and races from last year.

While I didn't set out to model any specific car, it's ended up being a bit of a greatest hits of the current cars, to a degree. A mostly-Mercedes front wing and nose, McLaren suspension, McLaren/Williams sidepod intakes, Ferrari sidepod undercut and rear engine cover, Torro Rosso rear wing strut and monkey seat, Sauber rear wing... etc.

*Scale is mostly eyeballed, and while I wouldn't claim that it's an accurate representation of this year's rules, I did get anal about a few measurements (even if they were taken from arbitrary points at times)

Wrong year. Button was on pole in 2004, the race Schumi overtook Button happened in 2005. Also, Alonso lost 1 cylinder in his engine, so that's why we had that awesome battle, it was V9 vs V10.

Current Imola - meh. Before changes it was beautiful beast, now it's pretty boring.

Anyone recollect what were the power & torque figures from the last generation V10 to last generation V8 and the first generation V6 Turbos (last year)?

Off the top of my head, I think the highest number I heard in the V10 era was something like 975hp. V8s before they got locked down, 750hp. Last year, 700hp? Maybe a little more.

The NA engines produced very little torque in comparison to their hp numbers, 2-300 ft/lb. Last year was easily double that.

Like I said, off the top of my head. Maybe someone else has more exact numbers.

Ah, thanks. So, what prompted this talk of increasing the HP (or is it BHP) to 1000. Aren't the engines powerful enough with incredible current torque figures? Also, iirc, the minimum weight for the car (laden condition with oils, unsure about fuel though) was ~650 KG. As such, the power to weight ratio was still greater than 1.

I think, simply, it's what people want to see. Everyone loved the quali turbos from the 80's with their massive boost, and monster rears. They were challenging to drive, and were quite the spectacle. I think competition from Le Mans Prototypes is probably also a factor. Those cars are making an absolute shit-ton of power right now. I mere 700hp doesn't move the needle much these days. Hell, Ferrari sell a GT car with more horsepower. GP2 makes 600+. While the current tech, and it's torque are fantastic, they could use some eye popping numbers for the casual fan that likes that sort of stuff. 1000hp is an exciting number. A number fit for the pinnacle.

I think the circuits are much better able to house that kind of performance nowadays as well. Say what you will about Tilke circuits, but they're super-safe if nothing else. Outgrowing the circuits with power/aero/tire performance had always a big concern for decades. Very much less so now. The classic tracks have done just about everything they can from a runoff standpoint, and it's all but impossible to pummel yourself in a crash of reasonable expectation on a new purpose built circuit.

Qatar GP is becoming a reality. Qataris are paying a part or all the of Bahrain GP race fee (!).

Expect either a GP in Europe or Malaysia to be dropped in 2016 or 2017.

That's what people said 10 years ago.

They're 50% right? :)

I doubt Qatar would pay anything for bahrain. If anything, they'd pay to make sure it doesn't run in bahrain given the political tension between the two countries.

Bahrain has no legal power to veto any race in the region as stated clearly by the circuit's CEO

They should host another race in the Middle east, so that we could have Middle eastern part of the season.

I've been reading a bunch of stuff on other forums on that lap and it's amazing what people are trying to infer from it. I mean, really?
