Artists like Thom Yorke/Radiohead, Sufjan Stevens, etc. have either paved the way for that kind of release or simply have done it before her. They're far from nobodies - in fact Radiohead being one of the biggest acts in the world makes waves with their album releases after getting out of big record corporation contracts.

I'm not at all concerned about the commercial or critical appeal of R&B albums. In my eyes Beyonce and Sam Smith were the clear front runners. I think it's more of a slap in the face to music, in general, to award Bon Iver Best New Artist after he'd already released a great album years before.

"second class citizen" is hilarious though. I'll remember that the next time I hear Beck's latest accoustic finger picking jam like 10 times in a day.

Now granted Beck should not have won Album of the Year. His best selling album was in 1994, not this year.

Beyonce should have won. The sales were in her corner and she did it with a silent release.

So the Grammys are sending some mixed message bullshit by saying "We only reward arthouse, not popular albums" when the previous year awards were contrary to that fact for "Album of the year".

He has a legitimate gripe and should be upset. She sold well enough to re-release a Platinum boxset the following year.

They're one in the same. The man is the music, there is no separating it. It would factually not be the way it is without his personality.

Kanye's music is great because he is outspoken, narcissistic, and confident in himself to a fault. He might be an enigma to some but Kanye really kept it a buck when he did his last promo run and kind of balked at the idea that society tells us to not to call ourselves geniuses in favour of "humility," or a disguised way of limiting your confidence. This all comes across in his musical content and what he does sonically.

The persona is actually why some people like me like him. He's real, knows he's flawed and he's tell you exactly how he feels, which is seemingly a rarity. And there are so many facets of his history that enrich that, and his music.

Kanye West is celebrated BECAUSE he's talented and provocative. People want to see him. He draws attention. He produces beats using baroque, acid, industrial, arthouse, minimalist, synth, and classical influences or even bringing lesser known artists on his albums and tries to bring it to the mainstream. Yeezus and MBDTF were testaments to those efforts and I appreciate that he does this. I bought every single one of his albums on release because he has an ear for music and beats and sounds that appeals to me greatly.

That doesn't mean he deserves to be as celebrated as Michael Jackson, Guns N Roses, The Beatles, or Metallica. He's not at that level of global musicianship, no matter what he says. The record sales globally are not there, so I don't see how his skin color changing would automatically make him more celebrated.

The record sales will never be there. Music is not as centralized as before due to the Internet. Also, people don't buy music anymore.

It is for big artists.

Most of their albums cost millions of dollars to produce. Big artists start doing promo for their new album months before release to spread the word out.

Bey released a new album overnight. And all of the songs had video's that she secretly shot. No one knew about the project. No leaks, nothing.

So no, this can't be compared to your soundcloud album that you recorded in your basement.

Neither is Eminem...yet Em is on that list. I mean how many ways can one man rape his own mom, kill a bunch of LGBT and pop pills and call it global musicianship?

That and album sales in general have declined quite a bit from when those artists released their albums. Not at all comparable, and it's not an indication of popularity once you add that to the equation.

well said. and he's fearless and takes risks. that might get him in trouble with the tabloids but it's also a big reason why none of his albums sound the same. and when you've made six very successful albums (and there's, I assume, some pressure to cater to your existing base), that's a huge accomplishment.

Then it has people saying Kanye can only sing through auto-tune therefore Beck is more talented. Beck distorts his voice on damn near every big track he's done! And I'd hardly call what Beck does singing. He talks over songs rhythmically.

People need to listen to more music and actually learn how it's produced before they start ranting. I doubt anyone in this debacle really cares about the grammy and are probably more than happy to have a part in showing that it's just theater and a mockery.

Regardless, that isn't a reason you should win a Grammy. If someone released an album in a golden box that you had to climb Mt. Everest to go listen to, that would be pretty revolutionary. I wouldn't expect they get a Grammy for it.

I like Kanye but I think he's totally in the wrong here. Beck is as musically artistic as anyone in the industry and it's pretty disrespectful to say otherwise.
 
Trying to compare Beyonce and Beck is foolish. That being said why does it matter how Beyonce released her album or how many she sold?
