Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Heh, you guys are thinking too small.

The giant room of teleport pads will be just for my build projects.

London gaffers, we're going to have our own booth at Rezzed! we'll be showing off Starbound and a bunch of our third party games. Come along and say hey! we're all really excited! :D

Man, I need to get back into this game. Little odd that I just stumbled back onto this thread as I was listening to the Starbound soundtrack while getting some work done (...it makes for some damn good background music while project planning :P).

Yeah, I actually listen to the soundtrack a lot. The music alone was almost worth the $15 to me, lol.

Aw man, the server is down? Someone create a super Starbound Server Restart Script for Winderz lol.

I logged onto the gaf server (Turd Ferguson).

I'm new to the game, so my spaceship has no vroom vroom power yet. Time to get to work.

You picked a good time to join in, progression (as far as you can go right now at least) is a much better experience since the big update.

Wait... what? Server is up? Although for some reason, it looks like no one has bothered to log into it all day.

Oh ok, figured out why.

I forgot, there was a power outage (yesterday? the day before?) and it caused the router to reboot, which in turn, changed the IP.

Quote here to see the new server info. (And can someone update the OP)

Well after starting a new char due to having a corrupted shipworld file and no backup my new char is back to where the old one is, but in a far better position.

Single player homeworld all developed in case ship dies out again
Found a 900+ damage crossbow to replace the lost one
Found a better rocket launcher than the ferozium one. (1300 dmg a shot)
More instruments
More 3d prints

And a lot of things stored into the SP homeworld instead of the ship.

And I backed it all up.

In general a whole better position if I didn't actually restart lol.

How is this game compared to Terraria? Should I jump? Or should I wait for the complete game?

I really want to get it, but I am still on my toes. And really want the new Terraria game, already announced. :D

Depends on two things:

1) How much did you like Terraria?

2) How annoyed will you be by updates to a game that's still a work-in-progress?

If you like building 2D structures, Starbound is a hell of a lot better than Terraria. Aside from that, I think the gameplay doesn't quite measure up to Terraria yet for various reasons, though it certainly still has potential, and, obviously, is still being worked on.

There needs to be knockbacks after someone gets hit. That's one of my qualms with the combat. It's an enjoyable game though.

Out of boredom, I burned through all the cobblestone blocks/bricks i had and what GAFWorld had to make a tower to space and a space ring.

So yeah, if you want to build in space in GAFWorld feel free. The ring does cut through a couple of asteroids.

I do like Terraria a lot :D, more because I could play and go into an adventure with a friend of mine, online. And, I am not annoyed with updates, updates are always fun, love new things, haha.

I am not that much into building, but more into adventuring, hunting monsters, getting materials and create better weapons and discover new areas and bosses.

All that stuff is in Starbound. It's just not all entirely rewarding yet since the game isn't finished.

Does anybody know anything about the PS4 version?

Unless something's changed, or they're working on it in secret, their supposed official stance is that they're not going to even bother about any other platforms until this game gets out of beta on the PC.

They had that, and it made the game laughably easy. That is why they have the parry/block system now.

We're doing another pass on combat soon so don't be surprised if knockback reappears. We've already made a few tweaks to combat internally and it's night and day how much more fun it is.

Uhm, server is being taken down until further notice.

I'm not really sure WHY... but the server has been running without any password for some reason, according to the config files. I thought something was strange when my admin password suddenly stopped working for some reason.

The only possible reason I can think of is that during the last update (not sure when that was, honestly) the config was overwritten. For anyone who's been on the server lately, have you even been able to log onto it with or without the password?

Anyway, server being taken down for a few hours, mainly because I need sleep, I'll mess with the settings in the morning

EDIT: Doh ok guess it was the update around Feb 17. If you've been getting on the server without a password, you'll need to put it in now

Server still down though, I'll fix it in the morning.

Ooookay, server now has proper password permissions and everything. Again, please be aware that now, you have to actually put in a user name and password to actually access the server. Don't worry, quote this message to see all the details.

BTW, if you have non-GAF friends whom you'd like to invite to the server, give them the guest access information. Technically, there really isn't any permission difference between GAF and Guest access, but I'm going to assume there will be in the future, for odd security reasons I haven't thought of yet, it's probably best if there's a distinction.

Can someone (Retro) update the OP with the new info please?

Is the mac version borked? I haven't played in over a year and tried playing today and it's just stuck the loading screen.

If its anything like the PC version...

Since you said you havent played in a year, did you only update the game without wiping it out first? Too much has changed in a year, so when you load up the game, those old files don't play nice.

We've started doing a development roundup, which is pretty exciting! Here's me and Tiyuri talking about what's coming up in Starbound!

The teleporting system looks great. Also glad to know that terrain generation is being looked at, particularly for underground. I like being able to dig straight down if I want to, but I think I'd do it less if I knew I could explore the surface and hit a massive tunnel or some other cool stuff. Yeah, there are the overland structures you can find, but they don't tend to lead to or contain the ore I'm usually looking for. Challenge rooms are an interesting idea too. If they reset every time you went in, they might become particularly great places to put teleporters.

It's interesting that you're going to put the attack power stat on armor. I wonder if you've considered separate attack stats to further differentiate armors between types, like having separate melee, ranged, and staff attack power boosts. I'd imagine this might be a better way of distinguishing the different high end armor sets (along with the currently different defense values) since energy will apparently refill a lot faster for everybody.
