Develop-Online: The Order: 1886 Dev Says "Internet Is The New Playground For Bullies"

Try working in the industry... it's not the critics that are being called 'bullies,' because criticism in itself is a good thing - keeps you engaged, motivated, hungry - but it's the people who attack you directly, attack you as a speaker and not the words you are speaking, that is the definition of 'Internet bully.'

It can get really bad. And scary. Some people have a real problem separating the two things. And the volume of it can get very loud. Those aren't the things the press cover, and a lot of more moderate Internet people will see it and just shrug it off or laugh, which only fuels a segment of these people to increase their fervor for the 'lulz' of it, but so much more is aimed directly at people and not products that the rest of the Internet doesn't see. And yea, it's bad. In that, he's not wrong.

Indeed. One has to compare the game to Bloodborne, another PS4 exclusive that isn't out yet but coming soon and that has not been shrouded in negativity, presumably because you can't apply such criticisms to the game. Now maybe Bloodborne will be a bitter overhyped disappointment in the end, we'll see, but while it's possible the criticisms aimed at The Order are all completely unfounded, I find that unlikely. Maybe the game will still be fun and enjoyable despite the criticisms, hell, I've enjoyed plenty of "7.0 metacritic" games in spite of the criticism they got, but I'd be lying if I said "I am right to enjoy this game and everyone else is just being vitriolic for no reason".

The 'new" playground? So...so it has only become relevant when it concerns your game??

Granted there are trolls and junk like that jumping on the bandwagon too. But a lot of concern about the product has been legitimate as well. Nobody at RAD should dismiss that. Its taken you five years to realize you should have put more game on top of your graphics rendering engine??
 
I don't think I've ever seen this much hate for a game before it even comes out.

Might as well throw away all my consoles, since I only own Sony platforms, with the more recent purchase being the PS4, that I bought right after E3 when they announced Bloodborne, which is my most anticipated game of the year, along with Uncharted 4 and Persona 5, all of those only playable on Sony platforms.

Man, I'm really a hater.

To be fair, I'm not sure if my opinions on the game would qualify as hating for you, but I still find your point absurd.

I do agree with this. My core thought is that this isn't what I'd want, so it's probably akin to paying that much for amazing steak... except for this analogy I don't care for steak THAT much and would rather pay more for, say, more high quality chicken, fish, or vegetables/fruit. Or I just want more mileage so you get several very good hamburgers over time and would rather wait for a better time to rationalize that steak.
 
So the original interview is mine, I conducted it for Develop Online. I just want to clarify some things because the uncanny haterade seems to be kicking in for some of you.

  1. Dana clearly says, about the steak analogy, "I'm not saying it has to be that polarising" recognising that there is a middle ground, that it's not either or. That's how analogies work, they simplify and clarify using comparisons.
  2. They weren't "allowed" to do the interview, Dana and Garret were in Sydney for the Aussie launch event of the game. I don't think I did the only interview. The 5.5 hours thing had only just hit reddit while I was walking to the interview, they hadn't seen it (because they'd been doing interviews all day I presume).
  3. Nothing they said came across as spin, and I've interviewed some real pro spin doctors before. They were genuine in answering the questions. There might be a little confirmation bias going regarding the haterade thing though.

I think the steak thing is a good analogy, if considered in the context of what they were trying to get across. It remains to be seen whether people consider it a fine ass filet mignon though.

Dragon Age: Inquisition was the last drop that broke the levy for me. I read that analogy and just thought... the all-you-can-eat leaves-a-poo-taste-in-your-mouth steak is the definition of a myriad of titles recently.

I am now a firm believer in the quality over quantity arguement. I'm all for more bang for yer buck... but if that quantity comes at the price of ENJOYING THE GAME... well... never again.

I never said anywhere that the problems of the order or the scale of the responses are the same.

The only comparison I was making is in how again how the gaming community tries to play down the shit posts and and comments, which tend to sadly be the vocal. Maybe most of the community isn't like that, but the ones who are are posting more and make it hard to get to the actual criticism.

And while I largely agree that people need to hold a game to itself and not everything else (Beyond Podcast at IGN made some great arguments in that area) and that until the game is in someones hands the verdict can't be set in stone, that doesn't mean people can't criticize elements of what they've been shown or have uncovered for themselves.

Right. Blooborne is universally praised. I mean the only point of attack I have seen is that it features shields (!!!) and some dudes are disappointed.

Sony struck a gold with Bloodborne. They do not even know it yet. I think it will move some systems.

They're not wrong but this isn't the kind of thing they need to be putting out there two days before their game launches.

There does seem to be a reactionary element, one that feels threatened (?) by games that don't cater to them.

Criticizing GTA is a good way to experience that bullying first hand. I forget the site, but one female reviewer gave it a 9, and yeah, the hate flowed.

Plenty of people have criticized the framerate and animations, as well as some of the IQ.
 
I love food analogies in videogame discussion. It's such an internet thing to do, glad that guy has embraced this specific form of debate. :lol

I thought of a great Dota 2 steak analogy, but it's probably not right for this thread.
