The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Mod Discussion and News [Creation Kit released]

if im on steam whatd mods should i get and if i have to link it to the nexus mods can steam still track time and achievements etc (mostly time)

MORE MODS! Installed some new ones for the first time in a week or two. I had to get Paarthurnax Dilemma because I'm not killing my dragon buddy, hell no, and I'm also trying out Dungeon Quest Awareness, Two-Handed Rebalance, Dogs of Skyrim and Apex Werewolf (since I noticed there's a werewolf achievement, I'm finally going to actually start using it)...

It's amazing how garbage the Blades are.

Ugh, AFT fucked itself, I can't have followers unfollow me and they aren't responding correctly to the mod. This might be game breaking.

Shit, that is scary. I have AFT as well (seems less buggy than UFO) but I don't really like to travel with more than one follower anyway, so I wonder if it's necessary. It just has so many other nice features!

I just found Old Hroldan Inn and now I really wish I had installed one of the mods for it. Such an underdeveloped little location! It's supposed to be this historic site of Tiber Septim's first victory but there's not a damn thing there. Like two lines of dialogue inside a generic inn with generic NPCs that say nothing but "did you need something?"

Sucks that you can't know ahead of time what parts Bethesda didn't put any effort into, and installing the mod for it afterwards doesn't fix the poor first impression. :(

If you want the full Steam overlay (chat notifications and stuff) while using SKSE, you have to rename some files. Can easily be done manually or with a little tool available on Nexus.

Yup.

It sucks that AFT breaks pretty much any quest with a forced follower, since they might not properly unfollow you afterwards and if they're supposed to die they can't...

Still, I roll with two followers both for fun and because I have to. Level 90+ Draugr with Deadly Combat installed do not mess around and I need a few human shields to even get past 2 of them. AFT seemed like the best of the three big follower mods when I tested them out, so AFT it is. Praise the nine for the "setstage" console command!

I personally have had less problems with UFO then AFT. However the problem I do have with UFO is that once I have sat a follower to essential, I can not turn it off EVER.

You sure? I have not renamed anything, and Achievements, notifications pop all the time when I play Skyrim and overlay works (shift-tab).

Ugggh.... my game is stuck in combat mode for some reason. I am leveling armor Judd by running around.

I also can't use carriages or anything because I'm supposedly in combat :(

Yeah man, I use OBIS with extra bandit patrols, so once you pass level 20, things get serious. So I like rolling around with a posse. Keeps things fun when your crew is taking down a replaced hold with customed bandits inside. Lets you feel like Legolas or something.

I don't even know why AFT isn't working correctly, it gave me no problems at all during my last play through. It was 100% perfect the entire time. Now on this playthrough, it's messing everything up.

I felt inspired to install even more mods yesterday. Went with Bandolier and Sabre Gear Backpack for massive carry weight since that part of your character progression sort of dies when you reach a certain level, like you'll gain several hundred points of carry as you learn to enchant and find new gear but then it just stops and you can't do much but enchant higher and higher numbers (which you can't do without high level alchemy and I'm not quite there yet). These two evened that out and gave my character the sort of gigantic inventory a level 92 should have. Wish Bandolier didn't use up about 10 slots though...

Also put in SkyComplete and, damn, it's a lot better than I thought it would be. I was assuming it was pretty much just an in-game spreadsheet that ticks things off as you go but it's quite a smart tool that not only tells you what quests you're missing, but who to talk to, what the prerequisites are and so on. I had no idea that I had missed like half a dozen quests in Whiterun, I was convinced I had milked it dry!

They way you can tick off unique items by simply picking them up again was a pretty smooth feature. I could just go to my Dragonborn Gallery and pick everything up and put it back to mark them as found.

You sure? I have not renamed anything, and Achievements, notifications pop all the time when I play Skyrim and overlay works (shift-tab).
I'm not sure that everyone needs to do it but I am sure that I did.

What a bizarre drama situation around that mod, I had no idea. Huh. (It's in an imgur link in the description.)

I only vaguely followed the shitstorm surrounding the mod. I know that it got taken down and the author banned from the Nexus because of the kickstarter and asking for donations on the mod page. Then there's the other thing about stealing content from a NWN2 which I don't know much about. Seems like some of the characters had all their dialog taken directly from that mod?

It might be removed from nexus , but the mod is still available here

Up to you if you want to download it .

Still no way to disable the console (for those of us with weaker will power)? I tried the ini file but it keeps reverting back to on (I set it to 0).

Oh lawd, that sounds like a nightmare to me. A Skyrim without a console to fix broken quests, reset aggro'd NPCs that are aggro for no reason, resurrecting important NPCs killed by a dumbass vampire attack and so on is a Skyrim I would've stopped playing a long time ago.

(Write-protect the ini file.)

So i'm thinking of rolling a mage with a new character in the future.
I'm already running with a shitton of magic mods like apocalypse, forgotten magic, wintermyst etcetc. Mostly because i just want to have them there when i fiddle around with magic from time to time. But as i understand magic gets severely underpowered when you're in higher level. Something about scaling or something? Sure i saw a mod balacing that out a while ago but i cant find it anymore.

Also got an enchantment called blink step. It's from wintermyst (kickass mod). It basically lets me teleport a small distance with like 2-3 second cooldown. AND it stacks. I'm planning to dedicate an entire armor set and jewelry for that one enchantment sometime later. Could potentially be used as a fast travel without actually using fast travel.

A question, is it possible to run Empowered Magic and Forgotten Magic Redone together? I spent some time searching the mod pages and the net for compatibility issues but could not find any. So I assume the two work together?

Also, I think it's not recommended to use SPERG combined with these two..?

Forgotten Magic runs completely independantly from the vanilla magic system. At worst you might not get certain perk benefits applied to Forgotten Magic if you run a mod affecting vanilla magic (though I'm not even sure Forgotten Magic relies on perk benefits since it has its own progression system).

Most of the big perk overhauls like SkyRe, SPERG, PerMa rebalance the magic perks to make magic viable at higher levels. There's also Simple Magic Overhaul which drastically changes the way spellcasting and magicka works (also independant from perks).

SkyRe, SPERG, PerMa
How modular are these mods anyway, if at all? Meaning if I like a vanilla tree, can I opt not to mess with that one with any of the above? For example, I like the vanilla lockpicking perks and do not want to make lockpicking harder or more involved, but some better melee perks would be sweet. Bethesda dropped the ball so hard on those.

Thanks for the answer!
So if I read this correctly you would advise against using Forgotten Magic Redone... hm, I really liked what I read about it on the mod page :)
I'm planning to start a new playthrough as mage - what would be your suggestion regarding magic overhauls.

Perma install lets you pick 3 things to install. Warrior, Mage and thief. Thief enhances the lockpick tree, stealth tree etcetc. If you dont want that, don't install it. I don't know if you can choose from single skilltrees though.
Stealth tree in perma is godlike. Shit gives you rope darts and all kinds of crazy stuff.

No, not at all. Forgotten Magic works great as a complementary magic mod with minimal fuss around compatibility. What I mean about the perks is that if you run with modded perk, and let's say you have a destruction perk that increases frost spell damage by 20%, then that effect might not apply to Forgotten Magic frost spells.

Regarding modularity, IIRC I think you can disable SPERG perks on a tree by tree basis. In PerMa you can choose between groups of warrior, mage and thief perk overhauls.

Aww, just when I thought I couldn't like Zora from Interesting NPCs more than I already did, she has that monologue that unlocks after you complete the main quest... You're my (character's) best friend too, Zora!

I know this is my 50th post on the subject but if you're not playing with a 3DNPC follower (Zora or Rumarin seem to be the popular choices), you're missing out pretty badly. Install it already!

I had interesting NPCs installed for a time, but I ended up removing it for my current play through because I wasn't aware there were npcs that did much other than tell long, long stories.

plus I.have other followers installed like inigo or whatever so I figured I was unlikely to need the extras. I don't know, maybe I'll miss them though.

@Interesting NPCs yeah you really have to be in the mood to take your time and listen to all those looong fully voiced stories. I'm not always too. I wish there would be kind of a "light" package with only the NPCs with new questlines.

@me :)
After doing a roundtrip the last couple of days through all those fancy new ENBs released the last few weeks I came back to where I started, running the Grim and Somber Malacath again...
I finally said goodbye to ELFX, which I really love. I tried so many hours with different ENBs to make it compatible but couldn't really get to a satisfying solution... It was a difficult step for me but now with the ENB running "as intended" it looks better than ever :)

Anyway, what I wanted to say:
Sometimes it takes me time to abandon long-loved mods and it almost hurts... Anyone feels the same way..? ^^

Every time this thread is bumped i feel the urge to play skyrim. Such an awesome game, made even more awesome by mods. Mods make the wait for the next bethesda game bearable.

Yeah.... about that.... My game kept crashing to the desktop in the load screen when I had it installed. Fixed the problem by removing it. Real shame.

Oh, I'm not talking about the stories, guys, I'm talking about how Zora acts and reacts when you take her with you. She talks about pretty much every quest and most (unique) locations and has mostly hilarious things to say, though sometimes she says sad things. She can also sometimes talk to the vanilla NPCs involved in quests. I imagine Rumarin does the same thing and I would not be surprised if he and Zora can also talk to each other if you have both; I'm now regretting that I didn't bring him along too. I liked listening to Zora's long story too, and Rumarin can be pretty fun, but the real value is in bringing them with you and having them react to what's happening around you.

It just adds a level of humanity to the game, to have someone that feels at least almost alive with you on your journeys. This is something that's sorely missing from the vanilla game and adds a layer of depth and attachment, IMO. Which follower you like is obviously preference but that's the best purpose 3DNPC, Inigo and Vilja serve (or so I hear, I never actually installed Inigo or Vilja since I love Zora too much). I know Inigo and Vilja are also made to talk to each other.

I know the talking to each other bit might sound kinda "who cares?" but it really does add to the immersion and fun when the characters around you react to what's actually happening, instead of vanilla Mjoll just randomly going off about that one time she made that poor man soil his armor. It's cooler to turn a corner and see a dwarven automaton and have one of your followers be like "uh, that's a really big robot..." and the other one replies "yeah, maybe we should run away". Bad example but I'm trying not to spoil things here and you get what I mean.

I can't try to predict the conflict there but that's not something 3DNPC does by itself. I've been running it for 200+ hours of play.

You should've posted about it before uninstalling so we could've helped solve it!

I picked up some of the DLC during the last Steam sale and am currently downloading the game again. Last time I played with some texture mods, some water mods, and a few other mods, but that was back on my SLI 460s, and now I'm on a 980 so I'd like some recommendations on an ENB to try as well.

I'd prefer something that stays somewhat true to the original and doesn't go too "drab" if you know what I mean, but also doesn't completely slay performance. Anyone have any recommendations?

In the meantime I'm going to start looking at what are the best mods nowadays. I guess I'll start the game from scratch and play a different class than I did before. I also left most of the western part of the game map pretty unexplored, so that's probably where I'll head this time.

It seems I really have bad luck modding this game..... I settled with some 40 mods or something and finally started to play the game. Really had a good time so far but now I just tried to do the Silver Hand quest from the companions and it's bugged into Oblivion. There is not a single enemy in the whole damn dungeon.... Google didn't help me squat. Seems like I'm the first to have this glitch. I assume it's due to the immersive creates mod or something but if I remove it the game always crashes after the Bethesda logo when I boot it. This is really frustrating... I have no idea what to do now...

Is this what I am to expect from modding games? If yes, then no thanks to that in the future.

I've never had any problem with Immersive Creatures making NPCs not spawn in dungeons. It doesn't make any edits to creature placements in dungeons as far as I'm aware, only the leveled lists which determine what type of creatures spawn from leveled NPC markers.

The crash at startup I'm 90% sure is related to some other mod which uses Immersive Creatures as a master. Because that's what happens when the game tries to find a missing master .esm when loading.

LOL

Ok, I have to push this thread one more time. This is the purest irony of them all. I just basically uninstalled ALL my mods and BOOM, enemies are back again. Didn't take me long to figure out which mod caused the glitch. You wouldn't guess.... The friggin Unoffical Skyrim patch. WTF?! From all the mods I have installed... This ain't even funny... Guess that's it with the unofficial patches. Guess there's athe reason why they are unoffical. lol

Appearances can be decieveing when it comes to this sort of stuff because there's a ton of related factors that you won't take into account on a glance. It most likely isn't the unofficial patch that is directly causing your problem. Either some other mod is interacting with it in a bad way or you didn't do something right with regards to your installation process and/or load order.

I've gotten countless reports of errors occuring for my own mods regarding things in the game that I haven't touched with a ten foot pole.

It wasn't the patch itself, it was the way it was conflicting with another mod.

Yeah I can't remember the last time the unofficial Skyrim patch conflicted with anything.

I re-installed Skyrim with 100+ mods earlier this week. None of them were incompatible.

Oh maaaaaaaaaaaaaan. I hope this actually legit happens.

It's being worked on and released piecemeal by separate teams for each region. The world space is not one seamless landmass as shown in the collage, since the engine simply can't handle it.

What Beyond Skyrim has that other ambitious projects do not is very competent management, direction and leadership. So that's what makes it more likely to survive compared to other projects that typically do not even if the individuals working on it are very talented.

Steam has really pissed me off. They took the Dawnguard dlc away from my library after accidentally giving it to me over a year ago. I was hesitant to even use it at first but people here advised I may aswell. Are my game saves ruined now since I already did some of the quests?

It shouldn't be irrevocably damaged, no.

Keep playing and see if you start crashing. It's really the only thing you can do either way, aside from just sucking it up and buying the DLC. If you start crashing uncontrollably, come back and we'll see what we can do.

Downsampled (Bicubic Sharper) to 1080p
Awesome, but dat grass floor texture tho...
