The colors of this photo will appear different to everyone. I think?

Holy shit in that pic its now white and gold for me again.

WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING

View this and then go look at the original again:
Nope. Still the same white and gold. Maybe I should try smacking myself really hard in the face?

The white isn't bluish white at all?
Not in a way that I would say affects the actual perceived color. It just looks the way a bright white looks in the shade. If I were painting it, I would probably add some blue and black to get the white to look properly shaded, but I would still immediately recognize the color as "white."

I don't understand how people are seeing black. I can understand the lightly blue part being mixed with white, but I can't see the gold being anything other than gold.

If you see black and blue you are

No matter upside down, on my phone, on a small screen, big screen, filtered, it is white and gold.

Y'all I think this is the apocalypse.

Muhammad, Jesus, Moses they're all gonna come down and reign hell on us

It was nice knowing you guys

So I happened to be on FB where someone posted this photo with the same question and tagged a friend so it showed up on my feed.

The photo there was blue/black. Come back to check this. Nope, still white/gold to me. Upped the size on FB. Nope still blue/black there and white/gold here.

"This can't be the same photo. I'll take it into Photoshop and prove this is all a trick!"

Pasted the FB one. Blue/black. Head back to GAF, still see white/gold...paste it on Photoshop. What the hell? The colors are now blue/black.

Go back to GAF...it's now blue/black. I can't see white/gold anymore. I changed nothing on my screen.

Witchcraft. Conspiracy. Aliens.

I see light gray (white) and brownish yellow (gold), photoshop tells me the same thing.

Did you find this "scientific - did you know" in a please-share-facebook-post?

Yep. This has to be one damn stupid thread, unless I've been missing something browsing these last few pages. The "white" is incredibly cool, and isn't technically #ffffff, so I can understand where you'd say it's blue or white. But I don't see how this has to do with super functioning cones and rods and all that nonsense. At best it's related to the optical illusions where you can put the same shade of grey in between two different contrasty tones and the grey will appear to be two different colors.

Stupid Tumblr pseudoscience.

Haha, at first I saw white and gold. Then my dog started growling so I looked over at him and freaked out that it was now blue and black when I looked back. Once I read the article, it started making sense, but for a second there, I was pretty worried.

I suspect what's going on is that the overexposure causes the bright light in the upper-right corner to be interpreted as the only light source. If it's sunlight coming from far behind the dress, which is a natural interpretation for the picture in the OP, then the front of the dress is in shadow. People will interpret the color of the dress as some color in shadow.

In the upside down picture, it's not as natural to interpret the light in the lower left corner as sunlight coming from far behind the dress. If the dress is lit from the front, people will interpret its color as the color under direct light.

You can see this sort of effect really clearly if you take a cube under even lighting and paint one face as if it's in shadow. Moving a small colored object from one face to the other produces an apparent change in the color of the object.

It actually just made me switch from B&B for a while to W and Gold

This is hands down the craziest illusion I've ever seen period

bruuuuh it's not even an illusion

take a selfie under a really bright yellow light

is your skin actually yellow

no

there you go

I see white and gold. I've never seen the blue and black, but I know it's somehow there because randomly asking friends around me without hinting to any particular color yields equal answers of "white and gold" and "blue and black."

Just give it a few minutes. Then you'll be ONE OF US.

ONE OF US

Never - even if it did change I wouldn't tell a soul.

This could be a real picture of our house and my extended families. Everyone is going ape shit.

Me and my daughter see white/gold and my wife and her sister see blue/black. My mom sees light blue and brown.

MOTHERFUCKING FUCK OF ALL THAT IS GOOD AND HOLY, it's black now, original image is blue and black, I'VE SEEN THE LIGHT.

why is it that hardly anyone is able to go back to white and gold
