Post the Most Dangerous Thing You've Done on the Roads #NotACop

Over the past few days I've seen a few threads about the improper or dangerous driving habits of other people on the road, as we on GAF are clearly incapable of driving with anything less than the most exemplary skill and grace.

I want to break that mold. Let's use this thread to admit the times we've done things horribly, horribly wrong while driving a car; be they stupid mistakes, poor decisions or downright reckless behavior. In the interest of everyone's legal safety, let's try to keep this list to items outside the statute of limitations!

To really get the ball rolling, I'll start with what is by far my most egregious infraction. I was driving along an interstate with a 70mph limit. There were some Larry Left-Laners up ahead so there was a whole line of vehicles down both lanes doing right at 70mph. I was fine with this for a while until someone else got onto the highway and cut right in front of me in a space about a car and a half long (normally I leave more space but things had clumped up with the on-ramp right there).

That simple cut-off set me off. Not into a rage, but into a state of mind where I just really, really did not want to be stuck in that traffic any longer. My frustration quickly grew as person after person cut me off as I tried to carefully thread through the pack of cars until I said "fuck it" and went down a path of absolute crazy.

I got into the right lane and watched the road ahead for an opportunity. I saw things were clear and there was a way for me to get around the remaining clump ahead in one fell swoop. I took it. I hopped onto the shoulder opposite the rumble strip and hit the hammer. All of a sudden I was passing cars at about 120mph. At the right moment I crossed back across the road to the left lane and shot past the last offending slow-drivers, disappearing into the distance.

This set off a chain reaction of madness behind me, with cars getting over and frustrated drivers coming out of the group at speeds that were damn near keeping up with me. Ten miles down the road I got off at my exit and hung out behind a starbucks until my radar detector stopped blaring KA band alarms at me (about 15 minutes). I must have attracted quite a few 911 calls.

Now don't go chastising me for doing this, it was years ago and trust me, I'm well aware of how colossally stupid it was. This thread isn't for chastisement anyway, it's for admitting our terrible mistakes! So let's cry havoc, and let slip the dogs of crazy!

When I was younger, friends and I would drop this powder sand or whatever from a construction site that was more or less not in use. It caused giant clouds of dust where no one could see. We did this for a bit. Cops came a few times. One bus came to a instant stop. Looked brutal.

Just prolonged staring at the console changing albums while driving at 80mph on the freeway.

Somehow I stayed in my lane.

In before someone stealth brags with road head.
My one ex desperately loved doing this, I couldn't deal with the distraction though.

Previous lifetime, I got the ride up to 170mph on a public highway.
(3:30 am, no on in sight, except probably Roscoe P. Coltrane who was too busy chatting with Flash to care)

Will never ever ever ever ever never ever never ever never do that again. lol.

It was night and I couldn't see where the lines were for a turn very well. Cut across not one, but two lanes, to get to my turn lane. Thankfully nobody else was on the road at the time, otherwise...

Also, when first starting out I almost slammed into a rock. Another case of it being dark. My dad had to reach over real quickly and turn the wheel sharp. That was almost really bad.

I had a brain fart and once turned left out of the bank into the wrong lane, I mistook it for a left turn lane at the upcoming intersection but it didn't have one. Luckily nobody else was around to see it, one of the benefits to living in the middle of nowhere.

Also one time there was such a bad ice storm that I turned right onto the highway near my house and my car did a complete 180 in the lane. Thankfully nobody around then either. Regardless I nope'd hard and just went right back where I came from. It was stupid of me to even leave the house to begin with that day. Still, the college I worked at didn't announce they were closing for the day until FAR too late, it's crazy how bad the weather has to be before they close up. Only happened twice in 15 years.

Went up to 110mph at night. No one was in sight, but I sort of wanted the experience at least once and I was really enjoying the drive that night. It was pretty nicely lit though.

Were you driving a lamborghini?

And what kind of car were you driving exactly?

About 14 years ago I got my Nissan 200SX up to 115 MPH on a highway at about 2 in the morning. Just because I could and nobody was out, I guess. Then I realized I'd have my license taken away if I were pulled over so I slowed down quickly. Less than a mile later I saw a cop in the median with his lights off clocking me.

I had a real close call with getting T-Boned when I ran a red light a few months ago. There were two sets of lights close together and I was mindlessly watching the lights ahead. It was the closest I've come to an accident and shook me up pretty good. It was totally my fault and was a good lesson about being an absent-minded driver.

At that speed they probably woukd haul your ass out of the car and arrest you. Thats reckless endangerment.

160-170 kph on a highway, a few times (less than 10), at first to see how fast my car (pretty crappy one) could go, and then for the adrenaline rush

It was always in the middle of the afternoon, so the road was pretty clear (around 3-4 pm), it was still stupid

Donuts in a parking lot while undercover cops watched us. Then we got in n out.

Driving home from a Cincinnati Reds games in heavy traffic, I rolled down my window and knocked on the door of the car beside me because the driver was driving like an asshole. Scared the shit of him.

The most dangerous thing I ever did?

Grew up in Michigan. Back in high school, one morning during the middle of the winter on a particularly cold day I was running late for class. It had snowed during the night, so I did a quick brush-off of my car and hopped in, started it up, and immediately started heading for school without letting the car heat up.

Well, there were a couple spots of ice/frost on my window so as I approached the end of my street to turn onto a major road I, for whatever reason, hit my windshield with some wiper fluid in an attempt to knock the stuff off.

It worked... but only for about 10 seconds. I turned onto the major road into traffic, getting into the left lane, going about 40 MPH when suddenly the wiper fluid all froze, completely blocking my view of the road. My entire front windshield just went white, and my car wasn't heated up enough so I could only blow cold air on it, which wasn't really helping.

Needless to say I started panicking, because I'm going 40 MPH and I have literally zero vision.

I ended up quickly rolling down my driver side window and sticking my head out in order to be able to see what I was doing. I was swerving all over the road, and it's a miracle I didn't crash into another car.

I turned on the nearest side street, and pulled over to the side of the road freaking out.

Since that day, I always, always, always wait for my car to heat up and my windshield to be fully clear before moving. I am also super hesitant to use wiper fluid, for whatever reason.

Hmm. Just speeding, really. Once made it from 116th and Bdway back to my house in Bloomfield, New Jersey in 16 minutes. I've done Bronx to back home in about 20 minutes. Late night, no real traffic to speak of, hitting 122....in my Honda Odyssey!

Edit: Oh, many times driving drunk or high, but only on my 30th bday could I claim to be so shitfaced I still don't know how my friends let me get behind the wheel. I remember it was cold that night, so I opened all the windows to get fresh air to sober me up a bit. That, and being super fucking paranoid of getting pulled over somehow got me to my friends house, where I immediately threw up all over, and in, his bathroom sink and passed out on the floor of his living room without cleaning up the mess. Really lucky that night.

Drove the wrong way through a roundabout. In my defense, it was a newly constructed roundabout that I didn't know about in a place that used to go straight ahead, and it was very late and dark so I didn't see that well. And there were no other cars around, thankfully.

When I was 19 my friends and I tied up one of our friends to the roof of a car and drove around with him on there for about an hour.

When I was 17-23 I would drive like 80-90 mph on highways. Just because I was young and cool stupid

One time with a group we all went to Hershey Park, I was probably 19. 3 cars drove back and basically raced each other. Still with my 80-90 mph habits, I came in last place.

For 2 lane highways, I used to get in the fast lane and match the speed of the car in the slow lane so my friend behind me couldn't get in front of me (let alone all of the other cars too)

There was another time, I was probably 17, where my friends pointed out some Xmas decorations. As we all looked at them while I was driving, a mattress fell off of the car in front of me into the road. I swerved blindly and dodged it but if there was a car in the other lane it would have turned out badly.

Last story, when I had just gotten my license, the 2nd time I was driving alone, I was so excited to have gotten my license that I wasn't really paying attention to the road. I ran a red light. Luckily the traffic had just gotten their green so the first car started to drive. They had to slam their brakes but no one was hurt and I was legit shook, I learned that lesson loud and clear.

I drove back from a rave at Bagleys in Kings Cross, at 6am absolutely off my head on pills, and with dodgy front brakes that barely stopped the car.

I had to circle a petrol station forecourt at one point to lose enough momentum to be able to stop.

And my friends and I were puffing on joints throughout the journey all the way back to our residence too.

Fortunately, I have grown up a lot since then.

I got my 370Z around 110mph during the day. There was a long stretch where I could see no cops and no other cars. I wanted to see how fast the car would accelerate. It accelerates fast...

Let a friend pull me down the highway in his jeep while I was on rollerblades. Turns out rollerblades aren't intended to go 40 MPH.

Driving after not having slept. Holy shit is that dangerous. Like I am super lucky it was the early morning or I definitely would've crashed.

Driving from San Diego to Texas A&M University pretty much non stop with no sleep. At one point we were driving a deserted Texas road in the middle of the night and the next thing was us having breakfast in the sunshine at some roadside diner. Neither my friend or I remembered who drove the last leg or how we got there.

There are others speed related things, but driving while sleeping was the most dangerous.

Had a 66 mustang in high school raced a buddy.

As we were approaching an intersection, the light changed to red about 200 feet from there.

Hit the break while i was still traveling around 90+

Breaks locked and lost control of the car and did a 360 into the intersection and came to a stop right in the middle.

Luckily it was late and night and there was no other cars on the road or things would have turned out way worse.

Never did that again.

Having a fast car also gets you coaxed into racing/reckless driving, I would have guys revving their engines next to me often. I only raced one guy cos I don't know how to get all fast and furious.

I went down a country road in a BMW 325ix at around 90mph, lost control and rolled it into a graveyard. No driver's license, no seat belt, no real injuries.

When I was young and reckless I went down some country roads at like 140 mph. (BMW 325i).

Ain't no 325i doing close to 140

Honestly, going close to 140 was about as dangerous as I think I've gotten. I tend not to do stupid shit that much if other cars are around.

Oh wait, I passed some cars doing 130 on a back road one time. That would've turned out bad if a deer had jumped out or one of them wanted to turn left. It honestly felt weird cause I turned around after I passed them and they were already small specks.
