I was under the impression that the first gen watch will eventually be able to run native apps but they want the actual watch in the hands of developers before they let them start developing for it.

Yeah, from what I remember they said that a revamped SDK will be available later on in the year. Most people just ran with the idea that it would coincide with the release of the first revision, but I don't see why the first version wouldn't also have access to these features.

Couldn't the first iPhone could use the App Store after iOS 2 came out?

I'm sure it will, but again... first generation Apple product. Like almost everything else, I expect a huge jump in the second iteration that will be able to smoothly or properly handle all the new features they'll announce.

At least upgrading won't be as expensive as for their other products since it's very modular... Oh god I hope they don't require all new bands for the 2nd gen.

Yup.

Apple's software support - even for first gen devices, and even if the last supported version performs sluggishly - is still leagues ahead of other manufacturer's. - The jumps in performance from iPhone -> iPhone 3G -> iPhone 3GS weren't that dramatic. Neither were those from iPad -> iPad 2.

It's much more about hardware features that are being added to 2nd gen devices, like 3G on the iPhone or a camera on the iPad 2, rather than software support and processing power.

And i just don't see a 2nd gen appleWatch having that much improved battery life, that dramatic of a body-overhaul.
The only thing i MIGHT see happening would be adding a GPS module to make it a stand-alone running tracker. Though i somehow can't imagine them doing that in gen 2. The lack of GPS seems oddly "currently by design" to me, right now. I can't imagine it being due to GPS modules not being available at proper miniaturization. It's probably more about power consumption, and i don't see the 2nd gen having that much more power efficiency to compensate the added functionality.

Rumor Suggests 12-Inch Retina MacBook Air Could Launch During March 9 Apple Watch Event | Macrumors

*fingers crossed* that the retina macbook air and iPad Pro with stylulz are one and the same

which OS would you expect it to run, though?

i can't imagine Apple releasing a piece of hardware with OS in dualboot mode. Neither can i imagine them calling something that runs iOS "macbook".

neither would something that runs OSX work well as a tablet.

i don't think they're gonna be making a hybrid device.

General rule of thumb is that if greyface wants something to exist, then apple will not make it.

So, no, there won't be a hybrid device getting announced. Macs will be macs and iPads will be iPads for a long while to come.

Is greyface Gene Munster's secret GAF account?

Ugh. Apple has told developers that they can expect users interactions to be a matter of seconds, Ads would seriously ruin a device like this.
Yup. Hope Apple will have a no-ad rule for the watch, or at least has very strict rules.

"Please wait 15 seconds till this ad disappears and then you can see your content" or any ad that takes more than something like 20% of the screen would completely defeat the purpose of such a device. Not to mention they'd significantly affect battery life because the device needs to download the damn ad.

Ads in apps would probably be a dealbreaker for me in a watch.

The only thing I can really see them doing is sponsored watch faces. I don't know why anyone would necessarily want to enable them but that's probably the closest they'll get to advertising on it.

WatchReport | Does the iPod Nano Make a Good Watch?

Christian Cantrell said:
There's been a lot of talk recently of using the new iPod Nano as a watch (the iWatch, as it's being called), so I thought I'd pick one up and give it a try.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3vQm5SCts0

The good:
  • Music, audio books, and radio right on your wrist. If you already use a smart phone, this probably doesn't impress you much, but if you don't, you might like the convergence.
  • Easy time synchronization. Your computer probably calibrates its clock against a time server which, in turn, probably calibrates against an atomic clock. Every time you sync your iPod with your computer, the iPod's time us updated, so it should stay pretty accurate as long as you sync it fairly regularly.
  • It's relatively small. At .74 ounces and roughly 1.5" square, it's actually pretty compact by today's watch standards.
  • Adequately functional. It has day/date on the face, and it also has a stopwatch and a countdown timer.
  • Configurable watch face. Choose between white or black.
The bad:
  • Not water-resistant. Even an impromptu water fight might be enough to ruin your iWatch.
  • You have to remember to charge it. If you already sync your iPod frequently, this probably won't be a problem, but if you don't, charging your watch is just one more thing you will have to remember to do.
  • Not good in direct sunlight. Since it has a backlit screen, it's very hard to read in direct sunlight. On the other hand, it works great in the dark.
  • Can't just glance at the time. Checking the time means actually turning the iPod on. Since you have to reach over and hit a button anyway, it might be just as easy to pull out your phone.
  • You're only supposed to use it in temperatures between 32° and 95°F (-20° to 45°C). That means no wearing your iWatch while shoveling snow in the winter or doing yard work in the summer — at least where I live.

Although using an iPod nano as a watch is definitely somewhat gimmicky, it actually worked better than I expected. If you're someone who is really into watches, I doubt an iPod Nano would replace what's already on your wrist or sitting on your dresser. But if you're more into gadgets and music than timepieces, strapping an iPod Nano to your wrist might be the way to go. Just consider going with the cheaper 8GB version ($149) so if you smash the crystal (screen, I guess I should say) or get it wet, you can pick up another without too much regret.

Looks doable. Some of my thoughts/questions:
  1. How comfortable would it be with a bluetooth dongle (like Jaybird's below)?
  2. Would a strap/case that protects the nano from sun and rain be preferable?
  3. Can the Accessibility 'VoiceOver' feature be used to tell the time?

I swear, if any of you kids wear a goddamn iPod watch, I’m pulling this car over and you can walk home!

so about four more years until a hybrid device :P

My worry with the space grey finish is that if it is anodized like on iPhone, it can scratch away to show the brighter metal under the coating. So while I like the Space Grey, I think I'd go with standard Stainless or aluminum and a black sport or leather strap. Watches get smacked more than phones.

This is my design

buying a rose gold watch and putting a neon green silicone sport band on it. That's new.

As a smart watch owner (Moto 360) if I saw a single advert on this thing, it would be off my wrist quicker than you can say...well anything.

That would be tragic. I think these companies are smart enough to know not to allow that thankfully.

Haven't really had much trouble with Space Grey iPhones... the slate colour was far worse for scuffing and scratching

I'm rather impressed that Apple seems to be inventing some of the best strap designs I've seen, in addition to a buzzed about smart watch.

Yep, but I'd worry with a watch since in my experience, a watch takes lots of hits on doorways, faucets, etc. It needs to handle more than iPhone to stay nicely finished.

Oh god, price allowing space black stainless with a matching metal band. Failing that, Black sport with a leather strap is my jam.
Stainless and matching metal band are definitely my favourite combos, and I find these angled images of them more flattering than the front and side shots.

Just great.

However, too rich for my blood for sure, as I intend to go budget on this baby. Black sports 42mm with black sports band is my choice.

I think that combo looks awesome.

Indeed. It's great that even the budget model isn't really gimped looks-wise. I could see them limiting the body color choices to one or something, but no, they are going all the way.

As you said though, the space grey anodized aluminium is a bit of concern in terms of paint chipping. But it depends on how thick they went with the process on this one, we'll see. But I'm ready for some scuffing.

In the end, the more expensive bodies will definitely be longer lasting and less prone to blemishes.

Disagree completely the jump from the 3G to the 3GS and the iPad 1 to the 2 were huge for hardware. The iPad 1 didn't even get IOS 6.

The A5's very much due for not receiving iOS 9 support, even if Apple's still selling iPads and Apple TVs with that chip.

But yeah, I think it makes sense to expect the second revision of the Apple Watch to be a pretty good leap (likely in terms of sensors and battery life, I guess).

It's gonna be a while before we get an Apple Watch with its own LTE/GPS/WiFi though, I think.

I can totally imagine people spend $10,000 on a watch yet too cheap to spend a dollar to remove the ad banner for an app.

Gurman has a piece on the new Music service, which won't debut until WWDC. Also on Apple TV:

Sources say that Apple is also finishing up work on a slimmer Apple TV set-top-box with a more capable and tactile remote control and a redesigned operating system bundled with an App Store. As of last fall, Apple had hoped to debut a new set top box as soon as this month, but without reports of new discussions between Apple and content providers, it seems that, just like last year, content roadblocks could keep the new Apple TV from debuting until another point in the future. As we learned yesterday regarding the larger iPad Pro, Apple will have another busy fall, so perhaps the new Apple TV will launch later in the year.

tbh I'd much rather see the Apple TV get a camera and microphone for gesture/voice control (and FaceTime) than a redesigned remote control.

Here's hoping the redesigned OS impresses. I've got less of a need for an app store and more of a need for voice control, unified content search, Continuity/Handoff support for media, and whatever reshuffling of free and paid features happens between Beats/iTunes Radio/iTunes Match. (iTunes Match's playlist-syncing feature really needs to be made freely available, like Photos in the Cloud library sync, even if the music streaming and downloading isn't.)

I think that combo looks awesome.
PlAvG1Nl.jpg

Me too.

I wish they would let us do the black stainless steel with the black sports band, but the growing consensus is that this won't be the case. If you want the black stainless steel, you HAVE to get the matching black link strap. That'll easily put the watch over $1,000.

The only way I can do that is if Apple announces upgradability - that the S1 was intended to be swapped out, as rumored. Smart people here - what are they chances that Apple will actually announce upgradability on Monday? Any guesses?

For me, having upgradability will determine just how special Apple Watch is.
