not the new ones. same with the new shuffle and new touch. el cheapo headphones for all three. a shame. the clicker headphones from last year were a nice, little upgrade.
Ohhhh. I thought he was thinking the nano had no button volume control on it so that he'd need the fancy headphones.

I usually take the Anandtech review along with the iLounge review to get a more balanced picture. iLounge made me lust after the device again so be warned :P

gorgeous!

I get that the camera on the iPod Touch is pretty poor but the reviews only tested it out with FaceTime and the Camera app. I'd like to know if my other camera apps work. Could anyone with the new iPod Touch help me out?

Yeah, I referred to my headphones because it's more convenient for changing the volume when you're in the gym. The nano has volume buttons, but they're tiny and you may have to unclip the nano in order to access them. The clip is actually pretty sturdy and never ever fell out during my training.

The 6th gen nano thing is small! I think it weighs the same as the 2nd shuffle, or at least very close to it. I've owned the iPod shuffle in the past, but I'm the type who likes to have my music on repeat, so on that factor alone, the 6th gen nano is made of so much win.

My only complaint is that the audio quality doesn't seem as good as the iPhone 4.

So I'm not sure if this is the best place to ask but here goes: I'm looking for a film based screen protection for my future iPod Touch. Is there a consensus on the best and/or what are your personal recommendations? I can’t find anything about what kind of glass the new Touch uses and if it’s the same as the iPhone 4’s super-duper glass. Would not surprise me if it was a cheaper scratch prone glass.

I’ve used ZAGG Invisible Shield in the past (on my PSP) and I’m not sure I like it enough to go down that road again. It gives the device a tacky texture to it which on a touch-screen device removes that effortless glide you get from glass. It also attracts dirt/grime really badly and can’t simply be wiped off, it needs to be washed/scrubbed. It also gives this weird orange-peel texture look which is fine on my PSP but I worry how it affects the tightly packed retina display.

Got my 32 GB Touch earlier today. Shit was sold out at the Apple Store/Best Buy, but luckily was in stock @ Future Shop. Anyway, a bit pricey for sure, but totally worth it so far. Fuck waiting another year for incremental improvements again. :lol

Yeah, Invisible Shields would make me cringe when I'd hear a knuckle accidentally scrape on its surface.

I'm not using a screen protector on my iPhone 4 and it's been going well for me. I loved PowerSupport's films when I was using an iPhone 3G though.

Are there any decent cases for the touch out yet? I wish apple would've went with a surface like the iPad for the backing. I wish amazon would ship mine already.

Apple make a great case made out of glass and stainless steel.

Looks and feels pretty nice.

Why do you want those ugly ass cases on your iPad/iPod's??
Because we want to protect the back, and we're worried about the inevitable accidental drop within the next 2 years.

And this thing ain't ugly:

So I dropped by an Apple store and got to play around with the new nano.

It was surprisingly quick and easy to use. very responsive and all the iOS touches that one would expect like rubber banding and inertia when scrolling.

it’s really one of those things that, when you hold it in your hand, you start to appreciate just how nice it would be to have a fully searchable music collection on something that weighs almost nothing and can clip to your shirt.

it was rather impressive using it in person and flipping back and forth between the different UI elements.

still, I’m not about to pick one up since I have no real use for it now. I have an old shuffle for running outside and my iPhone is with me all other times.

but, I could seriously see myself moving up from the shuffle to this nano when I can grab one used or refurbed for 100 bucks flat.

I just completely switched platforms this week XP -> MAC and Zune -> iPod and its been pretty awesome so far. I always said that the Zune was one of the best music devices on the market, but after messing around with my 4th gen iPod, I would have to say that this is one of the best devices ever. Period.

Could be that I'm just experiencing this for the first time, so this may come off a little hyperbolic but I can't believe I've held off on getting an iPod this long.

Goddammit :P I'm stuck in the middle as whether to upgrade again, I'll have to see how money goes at uni this year and then maybe I might be able to convince myself to trade up from my geriatric first gen touch.

Game Center was added, and rather than bump the last app off to an extra screen, it just moved the whole screen.
I noticed this at first too. I was freaked out until I scrolled looking for all my games. (which I keep on the second page.)

I thinking about buying the nano to make a watch out of it, man i sound like a douche saying that
It'd be perfect if the new nano supported wireless/bluetooth* headphones. Sadly, plugging wires into a wristwatch is not practical:

*there are bluetooth accessories that might work when plugged into the new nano dock but they are bigger than the nano itself which defeats the purpose :/

No. I had thought of it too. And I would if I could make my own. Unfortunately there's no Apps ecosystem on it or Wifi with Safari.

Got my 8GB from Best Buy today, first Apple product ever owned. Feel ripped off at buying it for about the same price as myl 16GB Zune HD I'm about to sell, but the apps make up for it. I am just amazed at them.

went to the apple store today to see the new touch. little disappointed by the screen, they have a very blue tint to them when displaying black. iphone4 cant do black either but at least it looks some what like a dark grey.

not sure if i should get an iphone or touch.... only going to use payg with the iphone if i get one, wifi for everything else.

WatchReport | Does the iPod Nano Make a Good Watch?

Christian Cantrell said:
There's been a lot of talk recently of using the new iPod Nano as a watch (the iWatch, as it's being called), so I thought I'd pick one up and give it a try.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3vQm5SCts0

The good:
  • Music, audio books, and radio right on your wrist. If you already use a smart phone, this probably doesn't impress you much, but if you don't, you might like the convergence.
  • Easy time synchronization. Your computer probably calibrates its clock against a time server which, in turn, probably calibrates against an atomic clock. Every time you sync your iPod with your computer, the iPod's time us updated, so it should stay pretty accurate as long as you sync it fairly regularly.
  • It's relatively small. At .74 ounces and roughly 1.5" square, it's actually pretty compact by today's watch standards.
  • Adequately functional. It has day/date on the face, and it also has a stopwatch and a countdown timer.
  • Configurable watch face. Choose between white or black.
The bad:
  • Not water-resistant. Even an impromptu water fight might be enough to ruin your iWatch.
  • You have to remember to charge it. If you already sync your iPod frequently, this probably won't be a problem, but if you don't, charging your watch is just one more thing you will have to remember to do.
  • Not good in direct sunlight. Since it has a backlit screen, it's very hard to read in direct sunlight. On the other hand, it works great in the dark.
  • Can't just glance at the time. Checking the time means actually turning the iPod on. Since you have to reach over and hit a button anyway, it might be just as easy to pull out your phone.
  • You're only supposed to use it in temperatures between 32° and 95°F (-20° to 45°C). That means no wearing your iWatch while shoveling snow in the winter or doing yard work in the summer — at least where I live.

Although using an iPod nano as a watch is definitely somewhat gimmicky, it actually worked better than I expected. If you're someone who is really into watches, I doubt an iPod Nano would replace what's already on your wrist or sitting on your dresser. But if you're more into gadgets and music than timepieces, strapping an iPod Nano to your wrist might be the way to go. Just consider going with the cheaper 8GB version ($149) so if you smash the crystal (screen, I guess I should say) or get it wet, you can pick up another without too much regret.

Looks doable. Some of my thoughts/questions:
  1. How comfortable would it be with a bluetooth dongle (like Jaybird's below)?
  2. Would a strap/case that protects the nano from sun and rain be preferable?
  3. Can the Accessibility 'VoiceOver' feature be used to tell the time?

The Nano watch is ridiculous, but I'm really no longer surprised by the lengths Apple fans go to. Not after the iMac in the Starbucks anyway...

It's a shame the nano doesn't have BlueTooth for headphones. It would definitely be the perfect watch/iPod combo.

They should put facetime into the Nano next year with Bluetooth functionality. I could have conversations through my watch!

THE FUTURE!

FYI. Apparently people who are ordering Apple TVs now are getting specific dates in October. Hope it ships next week for those who ordered right after the conference.

I swear, if any of you kids wear a goddamn iPod watch, I’m pulling this car over and you can walk home!
:lol If I had an iMac G4, I would attempt to take it everywhere though.

I forgot that the new nano has rotating interface (how long does the rotation stick? 'till the next reboot?) so the headphone jack or could be in any direction. Hmm...

I'm not a fanboy but I think the watch is a really neat idea. I'd like one and, like a lot of other people mentioned, I'll probably get one they release one with support for bluetooth headphones.

Same frustrations here. I ended up canceling my Amazon order last Thursday and picked up a 32GB at Best Buy.

My patience is wearing thin but considering the fact it 12 bucks cheaper on amazon + tax makes me want to hold out and wait. Although if I see a 32gb in store I will probably be tempted and buy it. Amazon has really disappointed me in 2 different occasions with the availability of stuff.

I had an iMac G4 for a couple years. used it as a digital picture frame thingie in my old place.

it as pretty nice. :lol

and talk about resale value. I bought it on CL for 350 in 2006 or so and sold it 3 years later for 300.

I don't ever count on hardware being available day one on amazon, especially apple hardware.

Sure, if they actually make it usable as a wrist-mounted watch.

At the moment you'll either have a cord or huge ugly dongle dangling from your wrist. Not to mention the sharp corners and the fact that you have to press a button to actually see the time.

That's accurate if anyone intends on using it primarily as a watch. Otherwise, as a regular music player with a bonus timekeeper, the watch strap is not much worse than sticking it in a pocket.

The difference is that moving your hand is somewhat complicated when it's attached to your head via a cable. Your pockets are generally more static.
