Resident Evil Revelations 2 Reviews Thread

Sooo... 4x 70 and 1x 90 rating on metacritic = 75? Shit's broken as hell!

It's broken because it's one point off from the actual average (74)?

Metacritic weights it's reviews, so a site like Destructoid is going to factor more heavily than Xbox Achievements. Now that practice is pretty messed up, especially since they don't publicize their weighting. But it seems pretty silly to call it broken as hell based on a discrepancy of one point out of 100.

A lot of reviews aren't scored yet, and especially as that's the reviews for one episode rather than the whole thing, but it makes it so the 'metacritic' of the game is a little harder to gauge as of now, be more relevant I think once the game is out fully and people can fully evaluate it.

It is for me in this case, because a score of 75 is still in the "green range", whereas 74 would be in the mediocre "orange range", no? That's a hell of a difference...

Reviewers pan The Order but give this good reviews?

Yeah, I think I'm officially done with reviews. If there's a game I wanna play I'm just gonna play it and forget this crap. I want to play both Revelations 2 and The Order, so it's all good.

alright man you do you

Ground Zeroes had a story and quite a lot of information. It's all there. It's just that not too many people apparently gave enough of a shit to actually discover any of it. I get what you're saying, but GZ could keep you occupied for more than 10 hours if you gave it the time of day. There was a lot of replay value there and in typical MGS fashion one of the highlights was actually learning the environment, enemy AI, and so on. I don't want to turn this into a GZ discussion, I just hate it when developers give players a lot of content and they ignore it and claim that it's too short or not worth the money, when in fact there's plenty to do.

I also do think that GZ was clearly made for the fans as something to do in the meantime until The Phantom Pain hits. I'm not sure they should have charged $30 or $40 for it, but I certainly got my money's worth out of it.

you get it my man. I played GZ for 30 hours and stil have stuff to do.

You can definitely feel the lack of big budget here, but I'd say it only surfaces through the animations and level design. The overall aesthetic is appealing. It runs pretty smooth on PS3, too, which is good for me. Overall I'm impressed, and I haven't even touched Raid Mode yet, which was initially the biggest draw for me. Not the second coming of RE, but definitely a worthy RE game.

Wouldn't RER1 be both of those? I think RER2 is much better than what I've played of RER1, too.
Im happy too see people feel this way.

Honestly though so far everything about REV2 has been worse then REV1 from balance, location and design.

Still seems like I'm in the significant minority which says some really good stuff about Rev2.

At the end of the day, Resident Evil: Revelations 2 has found its stride with its second episode. As you’d expect, this instalment ends in a cliffhanger – and a good one, at that – while never really resolving the conundrum posed at the end of the first episode. I’m absolutely craving its third instalment, which means I’m fully recommending that fans of the franchise and fans of third-party shooters pick this one up.

I won’t say anymore because the reveal is truly jaw dropping, especially for long-time fans of the series who’ve been paying attention, but it’s definitely not an episode that should be missed.

We’re now at the halfway point, and I’m convinced Revelations 2 is making strides towards almost being a game I could recommend to others. I say almost because it still needs to show me that, despite some odd identity issues, it knows what type of game it wants to be. There’s some other niggling issues I still have, but I feel that’s largely based on my own preferences and prejudices.

The second episode leads up to one fantastic cliffhanger, leaving me excited and wanting more. Compared to the first episode, this one does a lot to push the momentum forward and increase engagement. Both the gameplay and story keep getting more exciting. Throw in plenty of nods to longtime Resident Evil fans, and I feel like this episode encapsulates what the franchise is about: Expect the unexpected.

Updating the OP now, if anyone helps point out a few reviews or wants to request one up, feel free too, it's helpful to me.

From IGN's review:

Natalia’s formerly useless ‘pointing’ ability is suddenly given meaning in the presence of invisible enemies that only she can see

Someone must have had major troubles with Revenants in first episode, I bet!

Anyway, the scores are similar to what I'd give to the game. It's not RE6 I loved, but it's still cool. Really want to see what this team can do with bigger budget.

This is how the review starts:

Towards the end of Revelations 2’s second episode, Contemplation, I was struck with a revelation (pun firmly intended); Resident Evil is in dire need of a reboot.

The nail-bitting end to Contemplation proves Resident Evil needs a fresh start. The plot twist assumes the player has prior knowledge of the series, and therefore the impact should carry a certain weight. But it's ridiculous a series held in such high regard continues to lean on the past, and old “friends”, to carry it forward while leaving those unfamiliar out in the cold.

It’s high time Capcom give the same treatment to Resident Evil it’s given Devil May Cry. For as much as I enjoy seeing Jill, Chris, Barry, and Leon fumble around the same extreme situations over and over again, it’s time to wipe the slate clean and start anew. Be it with these characters, or entirely new ones altogether.

Yeah, no.

The 'series needs a reboot' stuff is the worst. Lets just get rid of 20 years of history and memorable characters so you can have a dark edgy amnesia clone. That'll show em!

This game was obviously made for fans. If you're not on the train, I'm sorry. It's a fun train to be on.

I don't think the series needs a reboot, but I think Jake and Sherry in RE6 are a very good step towards introducing a new generation of RE characters which I do sort of feel is necessary. Many fan favorites are now 40+ in the current timeline.

I honestly do think RE has the most 'canon' entries in any video game series though. Some of that canon is non-consequential (Dead Aim, the animated movies, the manga), but I can't think of any video game series with an on-going continual canon that goes on for as long and with as many titles as RE does.

It's ridiculous, but it always was, and I do think part of the fun, honestly.

Main first batch of reviews put up, if any notable one sneak in or anyone wants to mention any for me to add, I will.

Added, also for those who want another GAF'ers impressions, you can see SlasherJPC's here: http://www.ztgd.com/resident-evil-revelations-2/episode-2-review/

I wanted to talk about the
invisible enemies
, but I didn't want to spoil it for folks till the final review for the whole package since by then episode 2 would have been in the wild for while. I guess it's inevitable most bring it up, but damn that was a nice surprise.

Part of the fanbase wants a reboot as well, a minor part, but going by comments on GAF.

Its curious they mention DmC as that's likely coming back to the classic series now.

I know, it's just the logic he used. And he used DmC as an example of all things. Because that went so well for Capcom and the fans.

While as I said I don't think one is needed, I wouldn't mind a soft reboot going back to pre-RE4, post-RE3 timeline.
