John Carmack

when Carmack was 14, he broke into a school to help a group of kids steal Apple II computers. To gain entry to the building, Carmack concocted a sticky substance of Thermite mixed with Vaseline that melted through the windows. However, an overweight accomplice struggled to get through the hole, and opened the window, setting off a silent alarm and alerting police. John was arrested, and sent for psychiatric evaluation (the report mentions 'no empathy for other human beings' and describes Carmack as 'a brain on legs'). Carmack was then sentenced to a year in a juvenile home
wow

As reported in David Kushner's Masters of Doom, when Carmack was 14, he broke into a school to help a group of kids steal Apple II computers. To gain entry to the building, Carmack concocted a sticky substance of Thermite mixed with Vaseline that melted through the windows. YOWZA! Talk about geekery.

Well okay, somebody who was succesfull 20 years ago with ego-shooters.
Oh my god I can't believe what I just read. Carmack basically invented realtime 3D graphics and the first person shooter, and is still today one of the most respected programmers in the industry

THE most respected programmer in the industry

Someone who pioneered and influenced 3D game development, first person shooters in general, many modern rendering techniques and the way current graphics cards work and modern gaming netcode.

He slowed down at bit after Doom 3 `which was also hugely influential` and worked on the engine used in Rage where he focussed too much on megatextures which was too far ahead of it time and rocket science as sort of a hobby.

Now he`s working on VR tech with Oculus and Samsung to solve a lot of the issues remaining with VR.

+ He knows cars

I never understand much more than like 25% of the things John Carmack says, but he's always fascinating to listen to regardless.

Amaze.

Get Musk, Carmack and Yu all into a room together and record their conversation. Pretty sure our minds would implode

I do wonder. If you were to put say 300 of the top industry people into one room, gave them unlimited budget and told them go nuts, what they would put out. I could only imagine it would be mind blowing.

I don't know much about her but does Corinne Yu have some other knowledge aside programming? Because otherwise she really wouldn't fit that much...

Isn't he also credited with having invented (or having a hand in inventing) online gaming? Dude is a legend.
I'm not really up on the exact timelines so I can't comment on that. The bigger point though is that parts of his net-code are still used in current online games. So whether first or not, that speaks to the quality of it.
