Apple smartwatch conference - March 9th

Me too.

I wish they would let us do the black stainless steel with the black sports band, but the growing consensus is that this won't be the cause. If you want the black stainless steel, you HAVE to get the matching black link strap. That'll easily put the watch over $1,000.

The only way I can do that is if Apple announces upgradability - that the S1 was intended to be swapped out, as rumored. Smart people here - what are they chances that Apple will actually announce upgradability on Monday? Any guesses?

For me, having upgradability will determine just how special Apple Watch is.
I don't expect upgradability. It will be like their other products. Sell/trade-in when you want the new model. I also don't think the pricing you mentioned has any credible support.

Apparently the diamond-like carbon that makes the stainless steel space grey is quite expensive. Add the matching stainless steel link bracelet to that and you're getting pretty close to $1000, if not over.

I wouldn't rule out it being more expensive than the standard silver, but I just don't think we can guess it would be so high without any confirmation.

I think you're using the same source as everyone else, so throw that as an anonymous tip to BGR or something.

Very very very slim chance. It's a wet dream of the press, but not in line with anything of the sort that we've seen from Apple. Only thing pointing to upgradeability for me is the fact that the processing unit is encapsulated in its own little compartment. Only the plebs are asking about the Edition upgrade path, I'm guessing their actual market doesn't care.

I see.

Can someone explain why then Apple made the S1 modular? Why is it encased in resin?

Waterproofing?

If so, why didn't they say as much at the announcement?

I noticed those little interface spots on the strap. I don't necessarily think that any of the stock straps will have battery packs or extra sensors, but that might be a possibility.

Probably waterproofing and manufacturing.

Edit: watched the conference video again. It's encapsulated to "protect the electronics."

Aight.

Glad my expectations are in check going into Monday's event.

Looks like its the Sport for me and my wife.

Apple may highlight gaming on the Apple Watch on Monday:

Hundreds of iOS developers have been working with Apple in secret Cupertino-based sessions on apps for the Apple Watch, and now we’ve learned that this list includes game developers. According to two sources, multiple “mass market, casual” game developers have been in the running to show off light games on stage during Monday’s “Spring Forward” event in San Fransisco. While Apple could end up not showcasing games next week, we’re still told that they are championing the idea of light weight gaming on the Apple Watch. As one source said, “the iOS gaming ecosystem will be well represented on the Apple Watch despite [the simplicity] of the Software Development Kit (SDK).

These light weight games are said to be extensions of the full experience on the iPhone, while other games act more like powerful, wrist-worn displays to showcase additional content. For example, we are told that Electronic Arts is working on a WatchKit application for their popular racing game Real Racing 3. The application works in tandem with the iPhone app to display race track progress, competition information, rankings, race results, and countdown timing until the required virtual car repairs during races. EA, notably, demonstrated a racing game at the first iPad event…

Nintendo need to bring their games to the Apple Watch

here’s 20 new takes on arkanoid using the crown.

I could see it being used as an accessory for games. like some sort of second screen that has events displayed there instead of on the iphone screen. maybe for interactive storybook type things.

How can the watch be a secondary screen for a phone game? The watch face is turned away from you while holding the phone you are playing a game on. This crap gets dumber every day.

Gaming could work for something like...Trivia Crack.

But as a whole gaming would (and should) be pretty limited on this thing.

*site posts rumor with barely any details at all on implementation and function*

*person gets really upset about product that doesn't exist yet*

Can't actually do that until they give developers native access to it, the current SDK doesn't let developers use the crown for anything but scrolling the entire screen. In fact, as it is right now, even if someone thought of a good game for a watch, to do any kind of action game would be incredibly hard - the only form of input the players could have are on-screen buttons that react to taps(you can't detect the player holding a button down), and developers can't choose where to draw images on the screen except in a vague "top, middle, bottom" sense. Also, currently all game code would run on the iPhone, and to update the watch screen requires communicating with the watch over Bluetooth - not a fast process, and the speed is unreliable.

I didn’t mean as something you look at all the time. I mean the game is some slower paced thing that use the watch to present some ancillary event information. or something to divert your attention and break up the pace.

It would be ok for a Tomagachi-type of game. I still don't get the appeal of these smart watches in general.

If you dial it down from seeing it as a new standalone product, like Apple wants you to, to being a phone accessory which it really is, it starts to make more sense. For those that check their phone many times a day for notifications, this is a really good alternative to that.

Guys those are ball grid array parts. They get soldered to the board and that's it. The entire board would have to be swapped. I just don't see this working given they have to waterproof the unit, at least for the gen1 product.

It says EA is working on it for a racing sim game in the article. Even if they aren't then the article is the problem.

Sounds to me like they are working on a watch app that kinda acts like XBox Live - it shows things like your progress through the tracks, opponent times, high score rankings,, and F2P Energy countdown timers. All informational things you wouldn't look at while actually racing, no actual gameplay.

check ur heart rate during that wild Need for Speed race and challenge ur friends to beat it. Hit 190bpm or ur lame.

This thing is going to flop. No one wears these things anymore. No one will want something big and bulky on their wrist all the time.

I'm almost willing to avatar bet you but I jut changed mine like two weeks ago and I have no idea how long we'd have to wait in order to determine if it's a bust or not. :P but mark my words bms2993 I fully expect this baby to be successful

I too think it will be successful but that can mean a lot of things for a product like this.

Everyone I have talked to about the Apple Watch has ever:

a) Never heard of it before.
b) Thinks it will be too large and impractical for daily use.

I lot of people thought that Blackberry's and dumbphones were fine pre-iPhone too. It's hard to judge a product you've never tried.

The scientific method. Clearly you've sampled and correctly determined it's failure.

In reality, success doesn't have to mean it reaches a tablet sized market. I don't think anyone expects that.

I just have a hunch as well. It's the first post-steve product. His fingerprint isn't on this one.

I phrased that poorly. A lot of people don't know about it, yeah.

Obviously this depends on the people you're talking about but anecdotally I feel like a large amount of people already have some knowledge of it and that's before they've done any real advertising for it in America.

I, on the other hand, haven't had it come up in conversation with a single person who didn't know what I was talking about in the handful of people I spoke with.

What would you consider a bust? I've seen estimates from 10m to 35m for the year...

on top of that Apple aren't going to report the apple watch numbers quarterly like they do iPhone, iPad, Mac etc.
