Looks like Tim Cook has never heard of Pebble either (it also charges using a magnetic connector for charging)

is this the snake oil of our time?
like really you can do all those things already with your mobile phone and it's already duh mobile...

It would be nice if it had a simple time-only display mode for when the battery is nearly depleted. If I'm on a long shift, I don't want to be stuck without a watch until I can get home and charge it.

Everything about the watch is just duplicating what you can do on your phone but in a worse way.

a lot of this isn't really watch specific. opening your garage door? Your child is locked out of the house? Get your damn phone out.

Likewise the hotel lock. Is that somethign already supported on iphone?

shazam is about the only thing they showed that is relevant as a time critical 'oh whats this' thing

I'm not in the target audience for this thing, but 18 hours is ridiculous for something that you're supposed to be able to just put on your wrist and kind of forget about. People will forget to charge this thing far more than their phones, and needing to take it off to charge at work or something is far more inconvenient than charging a phone. Even for people who are interested, seems like a good idea to wait for the third revision or so.

18 hour battery life... Why does that get claps?

Because it's way more than people thought, more than many comparable watches currently out, and it's doing way more than a Pebble.

If battery life is your priority, the Pebble exists, and it is A Good Thing.

This presentation just makes me want to jump 5 years into the future where everything is automates digitally with minimal hassle.

Smartwacthes are a great idea but they clearly need more real world support. Still, lots of potential.

I use Google Now (aka "OK Google") to do this on my phone, and now on my smart watch. So, yes. Very handy, especially if you live in a place with variable weather.

I've been following this and really, it looks like the Apple Watch is more functional than I was expecting.

Maybe it's because I live in Seattle and the weather is a bit too variable that I never feel the need or desire to check a weather forecast.

Nobody is forcing you guys to get a watch, guys. And there is a big difference with something that is always on your wrist, and something that you have to grab from your pocket and activate to use.
