Rock Band 4 announced for PS4 and Xbox One

Thinking about it, one thing I think would be really cool for some of the bigger concerts you play in RB4 would be medleys, where you play a 6 or 7 minute set containing the best (or most difficult) part of numerous songs which fit together. It would require some audio mixing and the medleys might need to be preset (customised or randomised would be favourable), but I'd love something like that. All killer, no filler style.

Also a music video editor but that seems a bit more difficult.

How are they going to know you have the RB1 & 2 songs? I exported them years ago on ps3 but the hard drive has since died :/

The RB2 songs will be on your download list, tied to your PSN account. The RB1 songs exported from the disc but required you to purchase an export key, so presumably it'll recognise that and then allow you to download them from there.

Dusted off RB3 on my 360 last night to relive some memories... turns out I have a library of 518 songs that won't follow me over to the the PS4 version. :'(

I was thinking about skipping the new game altogether, but I gorgot how much my autistic 6 y/o daughter used to like watching me play. She likes how the coloured bars move down the screen towards her and last night she even tried strumming along with her own toy guitar.

Is it stupid/greedy/selfish to want an Xbone just for one game?

Eventually there'll be some Xbone exclusives you'd buy one for anyway, do it ;)

greedy - having or showing an intense and selfish desire for something
selfish - lacking consideration for others; concerned chiefly with one's own personal profit or pleasure.

I'm not really sure how greedy and selfish come into play with wanting a console for a single game. I mean it doesn't seem like you have an intense desire for the xbox one, but instead are just willing to get one because of rock band. And I really really don't get how you are being inconsiderate of others by buying a console for just one game (now if you have a SO and are going to potentially buy one without talking to them we can revisit the greedy selfish talk :P)

Is it stupid? That depends on you. If there are other games that you are interested on the xbox one and you love all of the songs you have on there then it's likely not stupid. If there isn't a single other title on the xbox one you want though, and you actually only would want 50 or so of the songs you have on the new game (roughly $100) then it would be a tad foolish to buy a $300-$400 console to keep all of your songs instead of just rebuying the songs you want for $100.

I mean it sucks to be losing songs and rebuying them like that, but I know while I have near 1k dlc tracks, only 150-200 of them would I really care if I had or not which would greatly reduce how many I would have to rebuy if I had to change systems.

I think they can implement something. I mean, both Ubisoft and EA keep metrics on you with Origin and Uplay. Whether Sony or Microsoft care is another matter, but what are they going to do, say no to the big third party publishers? It just probably doesn't make sense now, after the fact, to try to create a system like that for games that are basically dead. But there's no reason they can't just force people to make a Rock Band account when you start the game and then keep all that data on you as you play.

I imagine it's easier to deal with something like Uplay points, which are universal (I've earned points on five different platforms and can redeem those points on any other platform), but I don't see why it isn't theoretically possible.
I don't even think it's theoretically possible. You are over-simplifying it and thinking 2 competitors would just work together just a select few people can be happy when those competitors get nothing out of it. Please adjust your expectations accordingly.

Quick-Question: Exactly how did past installments in the Rock Band series had handled the Folk Rock/Soft Rock genres? I know Don McLean's 'American Pie' was a featured DLC song, and there was also 'The Beatles: Rock Band', but I can't think of anything else aside from those examples.

Also, I want to play some songs from bands that had focused on those genres, such as America, Air Supply, The Hollies, Bread, & so forth. Can you imagine how awesome it would be to play Fleetwood Mac's 'Face of a Pretty Girl' or Chicago's 'Colour My World'?

You've got some classic rock and progressive rock there.

Can you buy an UBisoft game on PS4 and play it on the Xbox One?

Harmonix, I'll buy a $500 BigRockTourCatalogue edition with all previous tracks/DLC included.

Either that or keep my 360 (the rock band machine as I call it nowadays) with the close to $2K rockband investment, or rebuy the songs for PS4 or this will finally make me get an X1. I don't think I'd need to pay for Live just for Rockband.

Bring it on, still got all my plastic instruments going all the way back to the original guitar hero, in several states of functionality, so much use.

Okay, I was hoping for a bigger selection, as I had only played the third installment & RB:TB in the series. Thank you for letting me know.

Also, I know about Harmonix's stance on the PC & Wii U versions of Rock Band 4 (which basically boils down to "If you beg for it, we might consider it"), but I hate that they want us to do that.... and then they won't even bother to do so. I've bought all the instruments, games, and a lot of dlc for the Wii version, so why can't they make a Wii U version of Rock Band 4 so I can port over that stuff to the next gen?

I don't think it's stupid/selfish/greedy at all to buy a system for Rock Band 4 especially if the DLC you have costs more than the system and you want it to have game time with your kid(s).

Thanks for all the advice. I think what I'll do is play through my DLC to see just how many songs I'd actually like to keep playing on RB4... if I realise that I'd like to keep most of it I'll start putting some money aside for an XBone. If not, I'll just rebuy the select few on PS4 when/if they're made available.

Either way, I'm getting the game.

RB guitars haven't had a mushy strum bar since RB2 strats onward. Mushy was a RB1-strat exclusive feature.

The way RB2-onwards strats feel in the strumbar is you feel it hit the sides of the strumbar's hole in the guitar body. There's no mush.

The RB2 guitar has a mushy strumbar....

GH6 had this for 2112

so why can't they make a Wii U version of Rock Band 4 so I can port over that stuff to the next gen?

because they aren't in the business of throwing away money nor can they afford to do so? The wiiu install base is still pathetic, the third party sales are still pathetic, the dlc sales are still pathetic, even if rock band did decently on the wii it's quite clear the wiiu is not the wii.

but how about we ignore the install base and think of something else. There is a lack of a real account system on wii. All of the dlc was licensed to the wii not an account, so their is a high chance that they wouldn't have rights to bring the songs to the wiiu without forming new contracts that could be quite a bit more expensive than just the ps4/xbox one where if they were smart they licensed the dlc for the account that purchased it to have rights to play it across all of their titles. I mean yes you can account transfer to the wiiu, but that is to a virtual wii inside of the wiiu, it's not like you can play the wii content on the wiiu without first going to that virtual wii (or paying nintendo for an upgrade to the wiiu version of their games).

Still feels mushy. They should have just went with GH style guitars strumbars, since hardly any serious plastic guitar players used RB guitars anyway.

ideally the GH guitars will be supported and you people who like to ruin the music with the loud obnoxious clicking can be happy as well :P

I've always personally preferred the rock band guitars because i can hear the music over the clicking. but obviously people have different preferences.

I wouldn't be surprised if mad catz or some other company made an alternative version that was more like the guitar hero guitar if they can't get the guitar hero guitars working though.

Here are the complete lists of Rockband DLC, and you can sort by genre if you like.

I just picked up used copies of 1 & 2 super cheap in the hopes I'll be able to export them to rb4. Owned them way back in the day.

Do we have any idea how this is going to work?

2 can't be exported anymore, unfortunately. But you would've needed a new copy or at least an unused manual code anyway. Same with Lego. I made the same mistake when I ordered a seal LRB PS3 copy right after they announced exports carrying forward :/

1 still works fine and you only need the disc, no code. Not sure how or when the exports will carry forward, could be that most of the songs will be up day 1 but they might be released gradually after launch.

The RB2 guitar was almost as mushy as the RB1 guitar. It was like the RB1 guitar but with the added dull thump of the strum bar hitting the sides.

"Look guys! Still using a mushy strumbar!"

RB guitars continue to be irrelevant

After my RB1 bundle guitar's strum bar failed within three or four hours I replaced the switches with clicky third-party ones. After that... best guitar ever.

Scrubs need clicks to compete.~

Seriously, though, I prefer the RB Strat to the GH guitars.

He's really, really good actually.
I mean I could at least make it through every song on expert, but he's leagues beyond me.

Well, I guess with Quantum Break being rumoured to be delayed until 2016, maybe it is better just to hold off getting Rock band until I get a 'bone.

My biggest concern is that I bought DLC like RHCP has been pulled. This is the DLC I cared about the most, along with Journey's Don't Stop Believing. I suppose there is no guarantee it will carry over which is my biggest hang up, which I suppose makes me look foolish if I held out on Rock Band on PS4.

When I asked them on Twitter a year ago, they said it was very unlikely they would get their songs back on the DLC market. So it's nice I have them now, but it's why I'm hoping for a universal system.

At the very least, a universal system carried forward for future Rock Band platforms.

I'm going to buy an Xbone for Rock Band. Can't forgo all of those DLC songs I bought last gen.

I imagine that if you have a local bookstore around that takes in video games, they might have some used ones. The 2nd & Charles near where I live has an entire rack of guitar controllers.

thrift stores are also a decent place to check. Mine doesn't currently have any but I already talked to my bosses about collecting the ones we get, and requesting any from the processing center if they don't want to save them for this, and when rock band 4 gets near release we will just have a mini event selling the stuff for like $5-$10 per instrument. I'm sure some others will do that too if they learn there will be demand for them.

Have they said anything concrete about exporting the RB3 songs? Or is it just a "probably not" ?

More like a "maybe." Basically the licensing was never setup for a RB3 export.

One big question mark as far as DLC is concerned is Rock Band 3. Sussman told us that there are currently no plans for a Rock Band 3 disc export. However, he qualified that with a caveat, saying that Harmonix wanted to prioritize the items that were important to its fans. If fans want to see a Rock Band 3 disc export, then let Harmonix know via sources such as Twitter and the official Rock Band forums.

That's cheap. I've seen used instruments go for a lot more if they're in decent shape.

they can but they don't around here.
even when rock band/guitar hero was popular the thrift stores near me only sold the guitars/drums for $5 or so.
Heck, we got a few brand new rock band 2 band sets in over the last two years and those got sold for like $10 lol.

As it currently stands I believe my chain just recycles the instruments for parts because they sell so poorly in the stores. thus at 5-10 it will be a great price for someone looking for them, but still a good amount of money for what is currently basically garbage to my store.

The trick will be having sensors for them. Though when I lost my keyboard senor and contracted mad catz about buying a new one from them, they just said what is your address, and then sent me a new one at no cost, so they might be awesome for other people as well.
