Super "NeoGAF Arcade Stick Thread" II TURBO

Just announcing they are running out has likely pulled some people in that were not entirely sure yet. I hope they'll last but will be close.

Is hori and arcade shocks stock tied to one another? I know they are available for preorder on both websites but I'd like to support arcade shock personally.

Agree with you guys. I owned 4 TEs over the course of last generation and felt $150 was acceptable for a sturdy product and obviously, many others did too.

They decided to push that edge and appear to be doing well with their trickled releases, but I feel they've left that sweet spot and nearly everyone I know that rushed to buy a TE just for SF4 is now waiting things out despite having games to play. Just as an anecdote, one guy I know who buys everything - barely played games, random accessories, and even he refused to buy an Xbone TE2 despite being exciting for KI/DOA.

I still wanted a GG stick as a long-time player who loved that minimalist design and color scheme, but that release experience was a sour waste of time and I don't like the newer ones that are plastered with MC branding.

Damn, madcatz hate so strong.

I think the build quality of the TE2 is awesome and well worth the price. I think the VS case is the best thing madcatz has made, and generally have disliked all of the budget priced sticks like the pro. Those are the things that felt like toys to me.

Also would prefer that hori not have made the middle ground cases and started the generation with higher end products.

They don't care. Real talk. I own 11 sticks, none work on next gen and I stopped caring thanks to that. Just play on PC now and ignore the money grabs. Modern video game industry is garbage tier. DRM controller crap. Gtfo.

I would love to, but unfortunately crap ports, and many games not being released prevent this.

Not that I care much about the stick situation. I buy lots of them.

Easy fix, ignore anyone who expects me to spend 200 on a new stick to play. There are too many great games to play already out. They obviously only want me as a consumer if they can take advantage of me. And I won't allow that to happen.

More power to you. Not that big a deal to me, personally.

ive already modded my standing cab for partial PS4 support, Ill finish that then wait around for cthulhu or akishop to get something out that I can mod my HRAP3 SA

I still much prefer sanwa to hayabusas/kuro, and a 3rd padhack is just too much for me

Understood. I just feel like I hate where the video game industry is headed, and feel like steam and PC gaming in general is the only safe place to game anymore. I'd rather support them then companies putting controller DRM to stop me from using my sticks and force me into a purchase.

I can totally understand if that is not a big deal to people. To me it is.

Is Hori going to put out another stick without the crap lever and buttons ever again? I get they wanna push their stuff but I don't want to get one then spend another 40 dollars getting Sanwa parts :|

I definitely understand. And while it isn't that bug a deal to me, since I buy tons of sticks, get the stance. :-)

Hayabusa is far from crap.

I think the TE2 has solid build quality and design overall, with the exception of the over-the-buttons plexi.

Pricing is the only aspect I'd take issue with, especially now that (1) LEDs have been removed with no corresponding decrease in price; and (2) Hori has a cheaper, more functional stick on the market. Even if you accept that you're paying a premium for a case that makes modding easy, it's somewhat gimped at the moment since side panel and LED availability is so limited. Plus, even if you could buy those replacement parts, all of a sudden the total cost starts getting up near $250 and you're in VLX range.

Probably not realistic feasible from a production standpoint, but I think the $200+ for a TE2 would be more justified if you could just customize some aspects your stick from the start (side panels, buttons, etc.), like you would with a car. Madcatz already carries a bunch of replacement parts, too. I can dream.

I've used basically every lever imaginable in the past few years and I can say Hayabusa is one of my least favorites. Hori please I get it, you even tried putting the lever in arcades, you want it to be everywhere, but it sucks not being able to get those sticks because of it.

And it's my favorite. So... I'd have the opposite problem, since I put a hayabusa in each of my sticks. /shrug

This is actually a really awesome idea. I'd like to see madcatz get into the customization market on the TE2. Obviously there are other factors in play but I think they could make a pretty decent impact. Kind of like being able to customize nikes on their website etc. Would also get people who want to mod but are afraid to other options.

Got out my old 360 stick tonight for some Street Fighter. Really hoping a good PS4 adapter comes out in time for the Ultra re-release.

How is anything these companies are doing "DRM controller crap?" When the N64 came out, SNES controllers didn't work on it. That's how it goes in the console world. Shiny new box comes out, you buy shiny new controllers.

And I certainly have no fanboy love for MadCatz (one of their shitty PSX memory cards decided to forget my save data on more than one occasion), I'm certainly not going to drag them over the coals for trying to create an upper-tier of product. You don't like it, don't buy their stuff. I don't. There is definitely enough variety out there to vote with your dollars.

Now I just noticed that RAPV4 and RAP4 are not same.

It seems that Hori had skipped V4 model on USA region, and jumped to V5 model on USA and renamed V5 as RAP4.

In conclusion, Real Arcade Pro 4 on USA = Real Arcade Pro V5 on Japan. Am I right?

USB standard. The only reason it doesn't work is because they refuse to allow it.

USB shaped plug doesn't mean the chipset uses USB protocols. 360 and XB1 use a custom protocol. Par for the course as far as I'm concerned. Nothing to do with MadCatz or Hori in the end, that's MS' prerogative.

360 had controller DRM, just like ps4 does now. I'm very aware of how USB works and how these companies are trying to get enthusiasts to spend more because they have the ability to do so.

So I guess I'll need to upgrade to a PS4 stick. You guys have suggestions? Are there even that many to choose from? I like Sanwa stuff...I at least know that much, if that helps.

There are a few options from $150 (Hori v4/5/kai/whatever) to $200 (Madcatz TE2, with Sanwas) up to $300 (Hori VLX).

If you like sanwa then order the TE2 stick on amazon.

EDIT: I hate the design on kai 4. I hate how the side sticks out look terrible to me. Is there another design similar to the V4 out there? I like that design.

V4 Kai showed up finally. Hori needs to not just throw the box into another, bigger box without packing the thing somehow. Came in all banged up. Thankfully so far the stick itself seems fine.

Hayabusa is a Hayabusa. I don't have to shell out for another lever to swap out a JLF because it came stock. I love it.

I like the new case design. It's cleaner looking, is more or less the same mold as my V3 Kai and they improved the door so those assholes who bitch about the ones on previous Hori sticks can stop it. This door is sturdy and elegant. The compartment feels like it has more room, too. The cable is about 10ft long and I have no issues reaching my PS4 with it comfortably.

And now the part I was waiting to see about: Kuro

Granted, I've only spent 15 or 20 minutes in DOA5LR testing things out, but they feel like slightly less responsive Sanwas (which is a good thing IMO). They definitely have a bit of a squeak to them right now and hopefully will wear in. They do feel a bit mushy but so do unused Seimitsus. Time will tell if I keep them in here or swap them for PS-14GN.

Overall it feels nice, it's the best stock stick (for me) that I've ever bought (IMO) since it comes preloaded with a Hayabusa and has a form factor I prefer over the Mad Catz lines (I say this owning 2 round 2 TEs and a V3 Kai). The price is certainly right and if I end up needing a second for local multiplayer with friends and/or the wife I'll definitely get one.

I do wish everyone would stop with the 8 face buttons, though. I hate that shit so much.

Thanks, guys. Probably going with the TE2 then. 200 is a lot, though. Damn.

I remember when the original MCZ TE stick came out I was a bit outraged by the price. I've been playing SF since 1992, but I always played on a pad at home. Sure I used a stick at the arcade but I never got comfortable with it. When SF4 coming out I thought maybe it would be a good time to learn stick.

But I didn't think they would be as expensive as they are. Before finding out I thought $50-$70 would be the price. So I held off learning stick until Super came out and I finally bought one and forced myself to learn. But it was two brutal months of beat downs and not being able to neutral jump consistently lol.

So now that the Kai is out there in people's hands, with English instructions, can someone clarify what the Assign mode does? This is what I would like to do:

Remap L3 to L1
Remap R3 to L2

This way I can have a 6 button layout on the face, but keep the functionality of the L1 and L2 buttons on the side of the stick.

Thanks.

There's a switch to do that on the HRAP V4, no idea if the Kai has it as well, but I don't know why they'd take it off...

That was pretty much my same situation. I got the TE back when I was wearing my thumbs out on pad because for some reason, I decided I wanted to get better at SF4. Couldn't believe how obsessed with the game I had become. Years later I sold it to help pay for a new graphics card, and then went and bought a cheapy and replaced the parts with Sanwa stuff. Since Ultra is forever borked on Steam, I'll probably get the TE2 and Ultra on PS4 while I wait for 5.

Thanks, guys. Probably going with the TE2 then. 200 is a lot, though. Damn.

It is quite a bit at first I only ever used cheap $50-$75 sticks that were shared among friends until I bought the first TE for $150. They had one at Gamestop so I used credit/gift cards I had received to purchase it during college. Since then I have been buying them too often since I had more disposable income. Good thing is it works for older arcade games that get ported to consoles and you can use them on your PC too.

Does anyone know where I can mod my Xbox One Madcats TE2 Arcade stick to work on Xbox 360 and/or PS4? This would really help a ton since Id like to use my stick for Killer Instinct, SFXT and Street fighter.

I owned the KI TE2 and it was an amazing stick.

You are paying for the ease of mod ability, no other stick besides the atrox lets you change art work out and parts easier than this,

Sure the plexi could be a bit better but its a small price to pay for all it offers.

I've got the Real Arcade Pro 4 Kai on pre-order. Would this Venom stick be worth a look at? I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to sticks to be fair. although The price point is far more attractive on the Venom first glance.

This was released only 1 week ago. So I'm gonna watch more impression for this. :)

But I think buying RAP4 Kai is better choice than Venom. Because RAP4 Kai has touchpad, but Venom is not.

Amazon finally processing my Kai order. Shame they didn't upgrade me to 1 day like they said they were going to though... Will be here Thursday.

Thanks for the impressions. Can't wait for mine, but bummer about Hori's packaging. I hope my box is not destroyed since it's coming cross-country.

I disagree about the 8 button thing though. I would hate if they weren't there. :P

I feel like the number of buttons will be a contention for a lot of people, with the majority leaning towards 8 buttons just because it's been the standard for so long. I honestly don't see the point. It may be partly from growing up in arcades and nothing having more than 6 buttons, but it feels wrong, to me. My HRAP V3 Kai has 2 hole plugs for the 2 rightmost buttons and if I get around to ordering the wider actuators to tighten up the throw like we did here at work, I'll probably order a battop and some more button plugs.

I do wish this thing had the L1+L2/L3+R3 switch like my V3K has, though the assign buttons functions seems like it will do what I'm wanting.

I grew in up arcades and have loved the 8 button layout since my MAS stick and I still use now for the following:

- 4-across layout in Neo games
- PPP/KKK in SF4
- record/replay in Arc games (quick access for specific tests)
- empty taps for listeners in tournaments

Couple of things regarding the Hayabusa and the Kuros. Both of the Hayabusas that I own have an issue with not going to neutral correctly. It only happens when I flick the stick real quickly, but for some games (such as GG where it requires quick inputs), it could be an issue. For example, when I flick quickly to the left, it flicks to the right also before going to neutral (think slingshot motion). It may be because the Hayabusas have a longer throw. Regarding the Kuros, they always squeak for mine. Some of them don't squeak at all though, which make them wildly inconsistent. Regardless, the squeaks don't bother me as much as the Hayabusas registering an extra input.

There's a switch to do that on the HRAP V4, no idea if the Kai has it as well, but I don't know why they'd take it off...

There is also a switch on the Kai, but they made them more "moddable." Now, any button can be replaced to the buttons to the side. I mean, it's great in terms of being able to be customized, but it's kind of a pain to set it up. Doesn't help that the instructions are piss poor. I've just decided to not use it at all. The good news though, the stick apparently remembers your settings, so you should technically have to do it only once.
